Looking to Make Sense of Things

Greetings all,

I'll start by saying that I can have trouble putting my thoughts to words at times, especially when anxious, etc.

I'm a young adult, amab. I've been coping with a mix of stress, anxiety, depression and the like for a few years now. Though amongst that mix of feelings, I've also had waves of what I'd have to describe as gender dysphoria. I can't say the first time I really noticed it, though in the past couple of years it has come on more frequently, and progressively more intense. The first specific case that I can recall with a moderately precise timing is July of 2017. I awoke from a vivid dream, in a mix of emotions. In many ways the dream felt real, though shortly before I awoke I started to know it was a dream. Trying to avoid the tangents I feel myself prone to including, the important thing I really took from that dream was the knowledge that I knew I was female in my dream, and it felt somehow right.

Afterwards, I spent a solid week hardly able to sleep. In the heart of my day to day, I wasn't able to think too much of it, but in the quiet of the night my thoughts would start racing, scampering like a panicking mouse. It was a jumbled mess that I struggled to make heads or tails of, but I'd glance at the time and next thing I knew it was almost sunrise and I was still wide awake. I was seeing a general therapist, and decided to bring it up during a session. I was losing sleep over it, and it was preoccupying my mind during social gatherings as well. Talking it out helped a bit, though so much was still a mess. The thoughts subsided afterwards though, at least to a point I could resume my life as it was.

I know I can have a tendency to procrastinate and supress things, especially when my depression and such are more active, so I let those thoughts and feelings get buried for a while. They returned again for a short time in the spring of last year, though I didn't act on them. Back in January however, my sleep schedule had devolved into a total nightmare. Waking up at 6pm one evening, not going to sleep until mid morning two days later. During that time, those thoughts and feelings returned with a vengeance. It was subtle for the first few nights, perhaps I was just too exhausted to entertain them, though it eventually hit me like a truck. I had very intense feelings of wishing to be female. For the next week and a half or so, I spent each night with those intense thoughts. Doing things like repeating in my head 'I wish I were female', even practically crying myself to sleep on a couple of nights. During this time I was utterly disgusted with my body, I couldn't even look myself in the mirror.

Overall since then, those thoughts and feelings have been in the back of my mind at almost all times, sometimes more prevailent than others. A few weeks back, it came to my mind to start looking into it a bit, rather than just ignoring it. I finally managed to bring myself to expressing it, and hoping to start making sense of it all, and hopefully being able to accept the answer I come to, whatever it is.

I don't have anyone in my life that I know I could talk this stuff over with, other than looking into therapy options. There a couple of people I *may* be able to talk to, but I wanted to build myself up to that first. I've been low self esteem and self conscious about things for basically as long as I can remember. Much of my family comes off as the type of people I wouldn't want to bring this up to, at least not until I have my answer and can accept it. My mother died when I was young, though her side tends to be more accepting. My dad and his family on the other hand seem a bit more socially stigmatizing, with several of them under the assumption that I was 'gay'. I feel like being brought up in that environment has certainly contributed toward my supression and uncertainty on this topic. In general, my social relationships are probably the most important thing in my life. So I feel its only natural I have this fear that this path of discovery I'm looking toward may very well strain that which I hold so dear.

As a side note I want to add that beyond those more direct feelings of dysphoria, I have thought back through my life as much as I can really recall and noted several other things that stick out in my mind as clues that something is off.

Back in middle school, I recall vocally asking a friend if he ever had thoughts of what it was like to be a girl. He only really responded by giving me a weird look. I didn't really think much of it at the time. Then in sophmore year of highschool, I got really into writing fiction. I began fleshing out this whole world that my brain had sort of worked on for years while my imagination roamed in those minutes before sleep. At first, the main character was a character I came up with on the playground in elementary: Delta. In many ways he was a personification of myself, my masculin self. Though shortly down the road, as I finished the first arc of the story, I introduced a new character. This new character was the focal point of the second arc. Eventually, as I revised the story a few times over, this character became the main character. The whole storyline was being retold from her perspective, and as such I made most of it told in third person, but her parts in first person. She is the character I have since fleshed out the most, by far, to a point where I felt alienated from Delta. This new character had interludes and spin offs of sorts. I would fall asleep imagining her adventures.

In some ways, she is ever present in my mind. An alter ego of sorts. When something is bothering me, and I'm not frustrated or stressed to the point of irrationality, I sometimes have the thought of "how would she react." or "how would she deal with this." Sometimes it even helps me through whats bothering me. I've come to the realization that in many ways, she is the embodiment of who I wish I were.

Yet at the same time, it isn't straightforward or simple. It's still a confusing mess. Maybe its my uncertainty, or my overactive passivity or indecisiveness. Though the feelings of dysphoria always come in waves. Sometimes stronger than others. I'm not sure its fluid though. When I mentally acknowledge the feminine aspects of who I am, I often get a feeling of relief. When I'm not feeling extremely feminine, I'm basically ambivilant at best. One thing I'm almost certain of, is my inner female is overall more dominant than my inner male. Yet I find myself afraid and uncertain. Unsure how to move forward, wanting to slink back into supressing it.

I can totally relate to you. I've known my whole life that I'm femme androgynous, but all of my adult life I suppressed it. I've been in a state of sorrow all the while living under the facade if a hetero cis-male. But I'm 32 now and I'm not getting any younger. I'm accepting what I am, and I finally feel happy and free and like myself again.

It's all so new to me though. And like you, I don't really have anyone irl to talk to about my gender dysphoria.

I can't really tell you what you need to do, you need to figure it out for yourself. But what I will tell from my experience, don't suppress these feelings, they don't just go away. Don't be overwhelmed into feeling as though you HAVE to assume a facade. It's your life, explore it at your own pace. If you just try to live in denial and never pursue getting to know who you are, you will never be happy or free. ❤️

Btw, I kinda chuckled about your fiction you developed and daydream about. I do the same thing. I had been developing an idea for a graphic novel series since I was in middle school, but I got lazy and busy and stopped illustrating it, but I still daydream about it on occasion and intend on pursuing publishing it if ever I could make time. It's a space sci-fi about an androgynous half-alien loner (based on my narcissistic self of course) who seeks to leave Earth to live a life of solitude in her ship, revenge against the band of space pirates who betrayed her and cast her into space to leave her for dead, and rescue her ex-lover princess from being imprisoned by a tyrannical ruler on Neo-Earth. All sorts of madness happens along the way. Over the top, I know!

I'd be interested to hear a synopsis of your fiction sometime.

There's something comforting for a nerd like me about daydreaming and developing this fiction in my head as I'm lulling off to sleep...

Hello Delta.  Welcome and thank you for sharing your story.  You're among like minded people here and you won't be judged, only supported.  You mentioned therapy and this would be a good thing to look into as its helped many of us here.  Please join in the conversation.

Cheers, Jani

Thank both of you for the welcomes and replies. It does feel nice and relieving to know there are people who can understand and relate to all of this. I certainly plan on looking into Gender Therapy in the near future, as it seems to be one of the best ways to help come to a solid answer, and such.

I feel that's part of why I am here. I realized they come back for a reason. I'm breaking so many cycles and doing things different from how I almost ever handle things. I tend to get overwhelmed by the whole, even when I know there are smaller parts that make it up. I tend to discourage myself from taking a step forward, hence staying where I am or as I had said 'slinking back' to what I'm used to, even if it isn't what I truly want. So I'm here, expressing myself which is something I often tend not to do. I'm taking steps forward, however small, to pace myself forward.

I just realized your username is your character's name, I'm such a ditz lol! That's awesome!

I feel ya, change is scary. It's good there's communities like this where you don't feel like you have to hide how you feel, wherever you're at in this. Just know there's support, you don't have to feel alone in it.

Although Delta isn't the character I relate to as much anymore, it just tends to be one of my go-to names. At the very least I prefer it over my real name, and I'm not anywhere near ready to actually change it, should that be something I decide on at some future point.

Change is indeed scary, though just since I've started to open up here in this community, and this discussion, I already feel slightly more brave and willing to continue down this journey, despite knowing the beast that is fear is certainly going to appear many times on this road.

Hi Delta,

Your writing and self exploration impresses me.

It also causes me a little concern because I know how difficult sorting out matters of gender identity can be.

Like you I'm new to this site but not the the gender community. I was dreaming of some MTF transformation magic before the end of the 1950's and creating stories with myself as a female lead.

It took me a while to get about making the magic real. I am now happily transitioned.

I think the art of getting many things right is honest self knowledge and experimentation.

A therapist or a good friend can help with the self knowledge. The experimentation is the small steps that you identify as so difficult to take. Calling these steps experiments helped me take them. Perhaps this will be helpful to you.

Good Luck

Thank you Joanne_C,

I had heard the term experiments before, and I'll say my meaning of experiment and of small steps were slightly different. The way I had in my head was that experimenting was more like testing the water with your foot. Trying something, seeing if it feels right, and then proceeding from there. Though the way you defined it isn't really something I had thought to try. While I still think of them in my own way in some regards, incorporating experiments as also being small steps and not their own thing may very well help. Thank you again.

Yeah…  As an exvangelical in my case. Guess I'll listen to that part of me this time.

Day was fine at work.  The District Manager was there.  She actually likes me so everything was fine.  Since I was the lowest level person there she had to ask me the questions they ask every time they come.  Then apologized for having to ask me. (Yes I answered them correctly). After she left I learned that there was a meeting scheduled with her for May 23rd for the entire management team (4 of us). I’m not certain what that’s about.  No sense speculating it’s probably just getting ready for the summer crush.   good night 3 am comes early tomorrow.   Willow

Thank you. It seemed to me when I was driving home that I had a bit more bounce in the rear end over bumps so I'm wondering if the frame was bent. I will have them check it tomorrow morning when the do the appraisal.

There is just a feeling that this is normal when I wear f clothes.  As a biological male I am supposed to, I suppose, experience dysphoria in f clothes. Instead it is reversed.  Sometimes there is euphoria about being a girl, but it is because my self-perception is lining up with my self-expression. Clothing is actually secondary.  Or third.  Secondary is what my body looks like.  I am a girl regardless of what I look like. I just am one.  As I get used to this I will probably stop talking about it.  Most women do not go around announcing they are women all the time.  They talk about themselves but the presupposition is that they are women.  Never a matter of debate.
    • LittleSam
Do you feel euphoria when wearing feminine clothes? I'm curious about why you think you are supposed to feel dysphoria in fem clothes. I totally get why you would feel dysphoria with masc clothes. For me what urged my transition forwards was the amount of gender euphoria I got from dressing like a guy , and my dysphoria from wearing anything remotely fem got worse and worse until i get rid of evey fem article in my wardrobe and all my makeup, so I could concentrate on just being me and chasing the euphoria. Dysphoria didn't go away though, because I've been misgendered constantly and it hurts more when dressed in my man clothes . However now I'm on T, my doubts and dysphoria have massively lifted and I'm excited to see the masc changes to my body happening. I do have to learn patience though lol.

Well that's no way to start off a birthday. Be sure to look at your frame just behind your rear axle to make sure it wasn't bent. When I was rear ended... At first look it appeared that my bumper was folded down, however the frame was bent which also bent the floor of the bed. I'm glad everyone is okay    Happy Birthday,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Well, I am a veteran.  I did manage to get an honorable discharge - just barely.  I was drafted to start with, and I wasn't wild about it.  But I figured it was my duty as a citizen, so there's that.  TBH I find it hard to stomach people who dodged the draft, going on and on about being such "patriots" and all, and literally hugging the flag. My egg hadn't cracked yet when I was serving, so I don't think being trans directly affected my time in uniform.  But there was most likely some subconscious stuff. Sorry, I don't think this is much use to you.

That was just one reference that came up.  I originally saw it somewhere else.  Technically, he did call for the eradication of "transgenderism".  But it would be hard to get rid of that (whatever it is) with us still here.     Yeah, later, when he got called out on it.   I don't really see how you can say this.  Sure he doesn't know what he's talking about, but the damage is real.   I will bend over backwards to give someone the benefit of the doubt.  But at some point…. I'm just not as limber any more.   They can say what they want, but actions speak louder than words, and when I see what is happening in red states it is obvious.  They do want to get rid of us.  I'm tired of pretending they don't.

For a time I would get an anxiety attack when I had to dress in male mode.  Haven't tried it in a while.

Thank for the birthday wishes, everyone!!!   It started great...and then I was rear-ended at a highway construction site this morning. I'm OK. The woman who hit me was shaken - was going fast enough to deploy her air bags. I was at dead stop. Her car had to be towed away. My truck too a hit to the tailgate and the bumper. It seems OK otherwise but I'll know tomorrow when they do the appraisal.   UGH!   Happy Birthday to Me!! :-)

"How did it go yesterday? Any trouble in Millville?" He shook his head. "Your biscuits and gravy are great." "Mama's recipe. She taught this girl to COOK." "Uh-huh.  Well, it rained the whole time.  We did the ground breaking in pouring rain.  Your friend, the former head of manufacturing, is now on the Board.  It looks like sunshine down there, he told me, with the missile plant starting up and they re-hired all the people they fired.  Millville Products is as it was.  And the Chinese money is still coming.  That was just an ugly rumor.  Gibson quit, but you knew that." "Missile plant, huh.  Yeah.  Gibson and I may go into business.  But I have been thinking-" "Yeah.  It's been declassified.  I can tell you they made missiles for Navy ships and planes during World War 2. It was shut down after Vietnam.  Several other supporting companies are moving in - paint, electronics assembly, a few others - that support missile production." "Okay."
