Yet another vigil

We held a small vigil yesterday for Chucha (Jesusa Fidel Ventura Reyes). Chucha was the transgender woman recently killed in Veracruz. Although the crowd wasn't huge we were happy to have coverage from one of our local news teams. I was saddened to attend yet another memorial, but was proud to see the amazing LGBTQ leadership in Sacramento and the resulting news piece that will hopefully raise some awareness about the seemingly constant attacks on transgender women of color throughout the world.

The day of remembrance this year will be long and difficult!  I seem to start crying and just can barely read the story of another death when my turn comes.  So much pain for simply being oneself.

Agreed. We're up to 14 on the year in the US so far. Almost all black women. It's horrible and doesn't seem like it's going to stop anytime soon. Seems like it's accelerating almost. Breaks my heart every time. ?

Four years ago we were also at 14 at this time.  It was ironic that the Williams Institute from UCLA had used some special, in-depth number crunching to come up with 1.4 million Trans people in the U.S just a few days before.  I conveyed that irony via spoken word to a 2500 person audience listening to the first known performance of a choral ensemble of Trans people at a national festival of LGBT singers.
