She and I are the same age so I can wholly relate to this. I did not come out in my 20's though, it would be 40 years before that happened, but I too was searching for the language to talk about it then. I had dreamed of some reason to go to Johns Hopkins for the surgery but could not say why.  I wonder if I would have made it through their program then.  Sigh.   I actually got my best information from a Playboy Magazine story about Wendy Carlos, a wonderful musician and computer expert who brought the Moog Synthesizer of  those days to being a serious musical instrument with her Switched on Bach and some other albums that I loved.  A year or two later I read the Christine Jorgenson biography, but still did not get the picture of me for another 20 years.  WOW.
