Tips on how to pack in public (using a sock)?

Hi everyone, it's been a few months since I've been on here. In that time, I managed to save up some money and plucked up the courage to buy a Mr. Limpy packer and a sort of foam insert to see if packing can help me with my body dysmorphia, which has been pretty bad lately. I also found some relatively inexpensive men's boxer briefs that have a closed in support punch and no fly. The underwear form to my legs, so I shouldn't have any issues with slippage (I hope). If I like the packer, I will purchase a STP one in time for the start of the Fall semester of college (my college will be returning to in person classes in mid-August.)

In order to slowly get accustomed to having something down there, I have placing a rolled up sock there for various time periods in the safety of my home. Unfortunately, due to covid-19, the packer and insert will take several weeks to arrive. I feel that I am ready to start packing in public, even if I only can  only do it with a socks for another month or so. The sock has helped me feel more confident. I've managed to use the men's restrooms  a few times when I've been by myself and it's a single restroom. When college starts back, I plan on switching restrooms (I have permission from and the support of a few professors).

Are there any dos/don'ts? I know that just from walking around my home, that adjustments are necessary.

In the morning, I'll post a photo of myself with a packing sock in place, and if y'all wouldn't mind, I'd like opinions on if looks somewhat realistic or if it's too big/lumpy etc.

Well, remember to roll the sock up? A lot of cis guys pack with a sock. Don't go overboard. For example, my wife has a pair of lovely angora knee socks. They are warm and fluffy. If you rolled those up you'd look like a porn star with pariapism (which I probably spelled poorly). Less is more. You want to change your lines a little without drawing attention. Remember to keep the sock secured more towards the front. You don't want it slipping around. I'm sure the other FtM guys can help more than I can but keep in mind you want it to look normal and that you'll be moving around so try to avoid slippage and always cross your legs like a dude. If you actually had a package, it would be uncomfortable as all get-out to cross your legs in a ladylike fashion.

Good luck and happy packing!

Attached are three photos of myself using sock(s) in different positions.

The first one- I have rolled a single sock over four times and placed it in a horizontal position.

The second one is the same as the first except the sock is in a vertical position.

The final one has two socks in a horizontal position with a bit of overlap between the two.

Do any of these look realistic? (I'm using thin crew style in all three photos).

Also, sorry for the spots on the mirror. I have hard mineral water.

I forgot to mention that I did wear the first style out briefly to the grocery store earlier today.

I think #1 looks the most natural. #2 is kind of aggressive. They also seem a little low to me, but that could just be the angle working with the cut of your pants.

The top one is the most realistic with the bottom being second but a tad overdone.  The middle one looks like trying to show off in an ungentlemanly manner and something I would see in a gay bar doing a pole dance. I would continue to use #1 if it works for you. The big issue is for you to be comfortable because unless a guy is "selling something" most people will not be looking, it is mostly and firstly your feelings.

I always go for the 1-2; one longer, crew cut sock rolled inside of a footie sock. When I had just 1 sock folded it was uncomfortable and would move all over the place, this is the best strategy for something natural looking. You won't have to redo it all the time, just shove it in your pants and you are ready to go. I have a bunch of packers like that all over my room.

I wear my shorts/pants low for comfort due to various issues, but I do have it lined up with my crotch. The photo was taken a a slight angle to work with the mirror.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I really appreciate it! I thought that 2 socks would be overkill. The hour or so I spent in public today with it went great and felt good. I felt a small, but noticeable morale boost.

And that's the main thing. This is for your comfort, not the comfort of anybody else.

  • 2 weeks later...

I got tired of waiting on the order for the packer, so I ordered 2 cheap regular packers (one 4 inch and one 5 inch) and one STP (4 inch) from Ebay. Overall, the 5 inch is the most comfortable, and it doesn't have that odd smell I've heard so much about. However,  I'm worried that it might be too much of a show-er, especially when I sit down and my shirt rides up some. Opinions? (Most of my shirts fit like this.)

Yeah, that looks a little bulgey to me. It could just be because you drew my attention to it though.

Thanks. I wish that I had a full length mirror, or at least one that shows down to my thigh, but I don't, so I have to angle it, which I think makes it look slightly bigger.

I usually use a hiking sock folded over just once since they are thicker. I got mine at walmart so they were super cheap but they are pretty soft since they are almost microfiber/plush on the inside. I think in the picture I had it vertical or slightly angled. Slimmer pants also makes it more obvious. (The pictures are from over a year ago before I was able to cut my hair and this was maybe my second or third time presenting male in public.)1682606750_IMG_6358(1).thumb.JPEG.07fe782bd46b475e640c6e7b9ccb24ed.JPEGIMG_6355.thumb.JPEG.ac2daad98cfeeade68d90cb92332ba3e.JPEG

My mom has been more accepting of me being trans lately and even promised i could get a binder if i pay with my own money. The preferred name is still an issue. So far my mom, close friends and brother know i identify as trans but no one else does. I recently told mr grandparents about my partner and explaines the perferred name as a nickname they prefer to have. Luckily everyone who knows is accepting but i feel like i still have so much progress to make. Started getting more uncomfortbale being reffered to as my deadname and she/her in public. My therapist is getting me a trans pin for my birthday next time I see her. I have hop but sometimes I feel like the goal is so far. HRT and top surgery are things i know i want but there has been warnings given to me about the problems that come with it from the ones that have accepted me and I trust most. Mainly from the adults in my life that know, also been getting nervous many people dont see me as a man but i also go to an all girl school. being consistenly reffered to as women has started to get to me and have had urge on several occasions to write perferred name on paper. i dont think pereffered name can go into school system due to being catholic school and for graduation diploma we have to contact the person in charge and ask. I just need some advice on what to do, I am thank ful for the advice everyone had given me, made me feel better about future and hope that I can transition but also worry about familial ties and affect. due to most f them being born in the 80's and 90's and not taking it well originally mostly based on my moms reaction. I love my family alot but how they might react is scaring me. my mom still donesnt want them to know. I know they love me but when I eventually come out and medically trasition in several years hopefully, what will happen? there are little kids in the family and I already dont see them a lot, how would their parents react? what would they say to the kids? I know my aunt would not take it well due to political belief and warnings from cousins.

Maybe.  But they'd probably resent being required to do it.   IDK.  You have to show ID to register already.  And you have to be registered to vote.

Hah! Woke up the Red Scare!   I’ve never read Marx. I tend to believe in the inherent goodness in people. I let their words and deeds change that. Insisting people are immoral/less than/should not exist, stripping them (or keeping them from) human rights, is an a most basic example of true evil. What evils do LGBTQ+ people present simply existing? How does the Right justify their crusade against us? What justifies the manufactured fear and loathing they spout every day about us?

I saw this concert in which it is said that the famous phrase of Jon Landau "I saw the future of rock and roll and his name is Bruce Springsteen" comes from that night. By the way Bruce opened for Bonnie Raitt that night and she was the better performer . . . just sayin'.

Astronomy and astrophotography.  I have done a few public presentations on the subject and could most likely wing it for an hour without putting you to sleep.   On the other hand if you need a sleeping pill, I could also talk for an hour about flying and you'd be out cold.

Please consider joining us, even if it's just for a few minutes to see what the meetings are like. I've learned so much, had so much fun and gained confidence in myself just by being a part of this amazing group of people. It's a low key, no pressure, non-judgmental chance to just be among people who are supportive, understanding and affirming of each other.    I'm travelling out of state and still planning on dropping in for awhile.    Come see what it's like!!

Thank you, Susan!! It was such an amazing experience for me. I can't remember if I even talked about it on a Zoom meeting.   Here is the link to the post I made about it. And, again, thank you for helping to give me the courage to do it.
