Practicing makeup?

I feel like since I have a pretty masculine face I need to be good at makeup to be able to pass. The one part of my face that gives me a lot of trouble is the eye region -- my eyes twitch a lot and so I usually need to try several times to get a decent look. A few days ago I decided I would just practice eyeliner on repeat to get good at it fast. I did it like 3 or 4 times then my whole eye region started stinging because of the makeup remover and I feel like putting this much strain on my face is not good for my skin. Do any of you have experience with this? What's a good way to practice without harming my own skin with too much with constant wax on wax off?

If you are not using it, you could try the remover for sensitive skin. I also find it useful to use moisturiser after cleaning too as the cleaner will remove natural oils. Just avoid the eyes themselves. Too much cleaner, even soap, is bad for skin. Except for when removing makeup I seldom use anything more than plain water to rinse my face and mosturise at least a couple of times a day. Luckily I don't have very oily skin though.

Yes, putting too much strain on your face is not good for the skin. The way it worked with me was to put on and take off makeup just once a day. After a while it becomes routine, although still not always perfect lol. If you cannot go out wearing it I suggest a time when you can put on and leave for a while before taking it off. It's all practice but accelerating progress is hard. You could lookout for products that will be easier to remove. For instance, waterproof mascara will always be a problem so not good for temporary practice. Some foundations are the same.

Take care of your skin, it has to last. Stinging is a warning that you are going too far or using the wrong product.

Applying eyeliner is probably the hardest makeup task there is.  I use eyeliner pencils because they are way more forgiving than liquid eyeliners.  I actually lay the tip along my lash line and use the lashes as a straight edge.  Instead of creating a hard, defined line, I smudge the line, smudging it more as I move outwards.  Smudging creates a soft, smokey appearance.  I don't line my upper lash at all because lining above the eye tends to make them look smaller.

When it comes to removing eye makeup over and over again, I have don't have any tips except to maybe say, be as gentle as you possibly can.  The skin around the eye is a lot thinner than the rest of the face, so it gets irritated faster.  Also, if you are just practicing, I wouldn't recommend any eye makeup that is waterproof, it's just harder to remove.

Good luck

I agree that eyeliner is the most difficult makeup task...at least for me. I use eyeliner pencils with close but varying colors. On the top lash area, I use color groups with small variations to give my eyeliner an ombré effect using at least two and sometimes three related tones of the base color I chose for a particular day. I don’t use eyeshadow as much as I did and I don’t worry about it being ‘too much’ because it’s much more subtle. I start out with a solid base color along the lash line and use each consecutive color line to blend it into the previous color. I never have to worry about a line not being as prefect as a you have to with liquid liners.

OMG!  you and me both, Maybelm!  I always say that after doing eye/liner it looks like I have been in a bar fight?

I like @Sally Stone's technique and will try that next time.

I don't use eyeliner often but one trick I have learned is to use an eyeliner brush. I moisten the brush then take colour from an eyeliner pencil and dab it along the line or use very gentle strokes. It enables me to get very subtle effects rather than heavy definition. Well worth a look if you haven't tried it.

After I told my niece who it is that I am, she made me a makeup tutorial video on applying makeup! She so very sweet! I make all the mistakes, take a photo, and send it to her for a critique, since we live apart. I'm not at the passable stage yet but I am quickly learning that we are the only ones holding ourselves back.
