Cautionary Tale

Kylie

Recommended Posts

Hi all! Sorry I’ve been MIA for the last week, but below I will detail as to why.

It has been almost 3 months since my GCS. I’ve had some ups and downs during that time, but coming out on the other side. Unfortunately last week my grandmother died so that is where my story begins. I was doing a lot of traveling between where I live and my hometown. I was keeping up with my normal post op schedule, eating semi-right but not drinking water like I should. Last Tuesday I noted that I was peeing a little less and urine was cloudy, but at the time I couldn’t address it. Fast forward to Saturday morning, the funeral. I woke up at 5am to get ready, I noticed I was having some mild back pain and what I thought were chills. So I decided to check my temp, 100.5. A bit high for me, but I generally felt fine. So I left home bound and got thru the funeral. Shortly after the funeral was over I noticed I was getting a headache and persistent back pain was not getting relief. I told my family I was headed back home to deal with personal issues. Once I arrived home I went in to change clothes and decided to do a Virtual Visit with an MD instead of going into the urgent care. Can’t be too cautious these days. Received an antibiotic for a presumed UTI. Trouble begin then, shortly after ending the video call, I begin to have intense chills, fever of 104 and began vomiting. Trip to the hospital was in order. Turns out my UTI had spread to my kidneys and I was now Septic. After days of ups and downs I have finally recovered and feeling back to my normal state.

Moral of this story? Even as a Nurse, an ICU Nurse at that; I see subtle changes with my patients and act quickly to address. Yet when i was the one in need of noticing changes within myself, I failed. While GCS has given me so much happiness, I failed to remember how easy a UTI can occur with this new anatomy and I have to stay on top of it. Remember, stay safe and listen to our body! It knows best!

Omg I am so happy you are recovering. I am sad to hear about your grandmother. I am so glad being a nurse you knew rapid action was needed and you did. I hope you are feeling better going into your new job in November.

I'm glad you got help as quickly as you did.  Thank you for the reminder!

Thank you all! It definitely was a rough few days. Really made me think about how to be more proactive in my overall health!

Yikes! I'm glad you're recovering @Kylie. That is absolutely a cautionary tale. Take care of yourself! Always.

Also, medical professionals make just the WORST patients. Do not play fast and loose with your rules. Insert playful finger wag. Again. Take care of yourself sweetie.

Who cares for the care giver? As you probably know, the worst running car on the road is the mechanic's. The house that really needs painted is the painter's house.

I'm sorry for your family loss, and hope you continue to get better.

Hugs,

Thanks to each of you! I agree, i am a terrible patient. This was a lesson for me for sure to pay more attention to my own body. This has given me a lot to think on!

Thank God you’re OK, Kylie. Septic is a monster. My father passed from an abdominal infection that went septic. It’s scary stuff. I will be sure to drink more water myself. I drink about 48-64 oz or water a day but also drink a lot of diuretic liquids...mainly coffee and tea. I used to be a strict 96oz. of water per day up until a year ago. I think I need to increase it again. I don’t want to get a UTI after reading your account.

Thanks for sharing this important news. It has brought to light the importance of water every day. It’s so easy to let it slide.

My Best,

Susan R?

I agree @Susan R  I know as a Nurse how susceptible females are to a UTI but even with my new anatomy I thought I wouldn’t need to worry since I’m young. I stand corrected! I got sick, and sick FAST. It definitely opened my eyes. I’m changing a lot of my habits.

I was warned that I'd be more susceptible with my new anatomy and had read that trans-people in general are more susceptible because we can't always pee when we need to. I've been super careful with the hardware upgrade. Nothing happens to my precious.

Hugs!

"Exstatic" is an adjective that means feeling great rapture or delight. For example, "His wife gave birth to their first child, and he was ecstatic about it". Synonyms of "ecstatic" include rapturous, entranced, enthusiastic, and frenzied.

Absolutely. Being able to encourage, to help, others is so empowering. I've been helped by so many people over the years, I love being able to pay it forward.

Good morning, everyone!!   A busy day ahead for me - need to cut the grass and then pick up the clippings. The grass grows so quickly this time of year. I cut almost 7 acres so that will take up most of my day. At least I can get some sun on my legs and arms!!   Time for another cup of coffee as I catch up here.   Enjoy this beautiful day we've been given.

I started shaving my legs years ago - I started getting an occasional mild contact rash on my shins. That became my excuse to shave them for both me and my wife. Over time, the rash didn't expand...but my shaving did. Full legs....groin......chest......and finally my arms. Keeping the rash at bay was my excuse until I came out to my wife. Now I typically do a full shave on Sunday mornings. The hair is lighter but I just feel better with it gone - it helps with the dysphoria and dysmorphia. I will also typically do a chest touch-up mid week since I notice the growth more there.   I wish someone would invent a pill that would stop hair growth everywhere except on your head.

Good morning.   im not sure where the time went.  I had a decent nights sleep,  didn’t  tell Alexa to let me sleep another 5 minutes,  I didn’t do anything extra but it’s almost time to leave and I just got here.  Definitely only a one cup morning.    I have the overhead console out of the Ford. It needed some repairs with toothpicks and glue.  Been sitting all night t for the glue to harden. I’m always to impatient with glue but not this time.  I want it to hold. Ok the next owner won’t be able to change the lightbulbs however in my defense, the are led so they will likely still work when the car goes to the salvage yard.   gotta go. Not as much on my plate at work today but it’s always busy.   Willow

Yes, my programmer friends and I think that antivirus software is a virus.  It's constantly searching your system and slowing it down.  If you install your own OS and software on your machine, and you make backups of your personal files, then you can recover from viruses in an hour or two.  My computer is 10+ years old and is working as good as the first day I had it.   As long as my computer is doing what I want it to do, I don't care if someone is spying on my system.

If you get a ticket, always say not guilty and go to court. Much of the time, the officer will not show up, and often the district attorney or the judge will not want to take the time. They ticket harvest because most people just agree to the fine and send them a check by mail.   If you are not a commercial driver, Most states also have a ticket forgiveness program. You take a little easy Driver's Ed Course, and it doesn't go on your record or increase your insurance prices. Explore your options!

Shaving my legs (very early on) was the first BIG STEP in my self-affirmation.  It also felt Real and Natural ... Finally (after all my years with fairly hairy legs). My wife was shocked but I think she thought it was 'OK' as long as didn't go any farther ... well that wasn't going to happen.  It was actually Step 1 of many to follow.  I did feel the need to hide it from others but eventually didn't care.  And, men shaving their legs is much more common these days. Home IPL (laser) made the hair removal permanent over the course of a year or so.  Whatever was leftover has been reduced to peach-fuzz by HRT. I don't deny or reject all my years living in the realm of cis-males ... it was part of my Journey to get to where I am today.  But since committing to HRT and living in an environment and community that supports my transition, I find it difficult to go back into Boy-mode.  The times that I do have to do that ... I can feel the dysphoria rising up again.  No going back ... at this point.
