Full body hair ?

Hey y'all. I am a middle-aged MtF who has not so much as started transition yet, but one thing that scares me is I am basically Chewbacca (not a Star Wars fan? Substitute Bigfoot) and so have full body, dark hair which has always been one of my worst causes of dysphoria. As for for my head, which is getting very bald I assume I will have to wear a wig? So, whenever I do start my transition, what do I do about that insane amount of body hair? I mean, electrolysis or laser may have met their match here Lol

Well, for body hair your choices are "Shave my, everything," laser or electrolysis. If your hair is dark enough, you can laser at home. Electrolysis is the most permanent solution, but also the most time consuming.

Or you could be like me, get alopecia universalis at 39 and not have to worry about it. I don't recommend seeking out an autoimmune disease though. They're not great. ?

On the plus side, wig shopping is lots of fun, or at least it will be once we can try things on again. It's still fun, just not AS fun, y'know?

Hugs!

I used to be a remarkably furry person. After 10 months of laser hair removal, with a sprinkling of electrolysis thrown in, I am slowly getting there. Unfortunately the pandemic put everything on hold for some months, so I'm behind schedule.

But all in all, I'm very pleased with my on going results. And I understand the dysphoria caused by feeling like a furry animal. Laser hair removal is pretty effective over time, electrolysis highly effective. I am now at a point where we seem to have gotten all the armpit hair gone, chest hair almost gone, and just patchy spots left everywhere else, leaving a small triangle patch in my bikini area.

It takes time, patience and willingness to endure some ouchey stuff. But it's doable.

Hugs,

TA

Hi @vanessa45!  nice to meet you and Welcome!

My journey started innocently enough about 5 years ago when I decided I could no longer stand having chest/stomach hair.  So, I started laser hair removal.  It was very effective.  I still have some gray hairs left that will need electrolysis someday, so if you're going to do laser start early.
Next big step for me was shaving my legs.  THAT was literally transformational for me.  The moat feminine thing I had ever felt before.
I continue to work on my legs and bought a home IPL (laser) which has also been effective in getting rid of about 80% of my hair so far.  Arms next.

So, there are options.  I was not super hairy, but I don't think the amount matters.  It might just take a bit longer.  You might start with shaving because if you are going to do laser you will have to be shaved anyway.

Welcome again, and good luck❣️

If you have a high tolerance for pain, epilation is quite a good way to go from a cost point of view and means you have to spend less time shaving. Apart from my face and genitals I've used it on all other body parts and my posting link above outlines where it has worked best for me.

Thanks everyone! I guess I have some options here. They're about what I imagined, but hearing from you all helps a bunch and just knowing that so many others have gone through a similar thing and come out successful is very encouraging. ?

Yesterday I had another near-full body laser hair removal session. Over time I've learned to take a benadryl the morning of, another just before and another just after. It tamps down the tendency for my skin to become covered in red blotchy patches.

Oh, so sorry you have to battle this as well @gina-nicole-t ?. How do/did you shave areas like your back and whatnot? Sorry, I'm still super new to it all and trying to figure this stuff out. Insurance is something I've been quite curious about. I will start a new Topic to ask that one.

@Vanessa Michelle I can't reach my back even with my long arms. Those back-blades that Amazon sells are completely worthless (I tried). I have Regence PPO for insurance and they have a great transgender part to their insurance. They are paying for my breast augmentation and FFS in January 2021 unless my governor puts the breaks on elective surgery again. So far he hasn't. Attached to this is the gender dysphoria codes from my insurance in case you would like to have a look.

Best wishes on your journey,

Gina

I have had moderate success in mowing down the fur with electric clippers. It's not optimal, and delivers a "I shaved yesterday" look, but it's better than long hair flapping in the breeze. It looks fine from a distance but obviously is stubble to the touch.

The biggest advantage is being able to guide it along while slightly contorted. The disadvantage is the possibility of getting nicked.

If you are going in for laser hair removal, the clippers work fine.

I feel your pain. Hugs,

TA

I was watching one of the latest video from Jackie Rabbit and she says to stay away from laser removal if you are looking for permanent hair removal. She says with laser hair can come back. I have back hair myself and am thinking about electrolysis  but am thinking, for now, just doing waxing which can last for longer than shaving and give me time to consider when I will start electrolysis on that area. The area I do plan to start on would be face and crotch since those places are considered more drastic in my opinion.

I use a product called a ManGroomer which I got from Amazon and swivels in the middle, and the lower half is the handle that extends so it reaches further. It can be used either over your shoulders or from the base of the spine upwards. If like me, you are on  your own, you need to go by feel and the noise of the cutters which do change depending on if you are cutting hair or not.

Believe it or not, you are lucky to have dark hair.  Laser works best on darker hair, especially if you don't also have very dark skin.  While not permanent, it can last quite some time and reduce overall amounts.  Us older redheads who could easily be an extra on a vikings show on the other hand.....  Laser doesn't work at all.  I'm doing electrolysis on my beard and twice a month basically lathering my whole body with a Nair type product.  Since most of my body hair is now blondish /grey it takes a while for it to be noticeable to the casual eye.  I have to shave my chest more frequently though since I do present FT and most tops expose some décolleté area.   Eventually I am going to have the chest electrocuted since I can shave one day and it's rough stubble the next :( . Even though my insurance covers some electrolysis it still adds up in costs. I'm told that after some time on HRT, body hair tends to thin in some people. I'm hopeful of that happening. I've only been on HRT for 3 months.  good luck

About 10 years before I came out to my wife, I started shaving my chest as it used to get very sweaty and itchy when I was hot, and this irritation drastically reduced when it was shaved ( the result was genuine although the reason I claimed for shaving it was not ;) ). Anyway it was a pain shaving it every day, so I asked my wife if I could borrow her epilator to address that area and while I acknowledge there was some pain, it is one of the less painful areas I use it for. At the end of a couple of months I noticed that the only areas where my hair was noticeably growing was around my nipples and that has remained the case ever since. I've been epilating my legs since I came out and the below the knee areas are going the same way, I can probably manage a week or more before having any noticeable growth in that area. Might be worth a go if you have a reasonable pain tolerance and you can get basic epilators for quite a low price (about £20 in UK)

I've been subjecting myself to so much pain right now I don't think I can add any more. going for 90 minutes of facial electrolysis twice a week plus working on laser removal of a few decent sized tattoos every other month.

I'm pushing hard on the facial hair because I think we're going to get those kinds of service businesses shut down here by new years and then I won't have any sessions for a couple months in all likelihood. I want to make as much progress as I can while I can.

I have read numerous accounts of trans folk no longer being welcome among evangelicals.   I am here for help and fellowship not to rebuke anyone.  I can take a pretty high degree of insult, etc., and you haven't insulted me, to my recollection anyway :) and I usually let it go.  But I thought I would let it all out there.   I am sure I disagree with you on numerous issues.  I appreciate other people's viewpoints, including those who radically disagree with me.  Intellectual challenge is good. One thing I appreciate about @MaeBe.

Post 8 “The Ohio Years” We moved to Pittsburgh because of the job with US Airways.  The job involved classroom instruction and simulator training, but no actual flying, so I kept looking for an actual pilot position.  A year after signing on with US Airways I got hired to fly business jets.  The company was located in Cleveland, Ohio, but I was flown commercially from my home in Pittsburgh to where my aircraft was located, making it unnecessary to live near company headquarters.    My flight scheduled consisted of eight days on duty with seven days off.  Having seven days off in a row was great but being gone from home eight days in a row was difficult.  For the first few years the flying was fun, but after a while the eight flying days in a row, were taking their toll on me.  Those days were brutal, consisting of very long hours and a lot of flying time.  Usually, I came home exhausted and need three days just to recover from the work week.  Flying for a living is glamorous until you actually do it.  Quickly, it became just a job.    After five years as a line captain, I became a flight department manager, which required we live near company headquarters.  That meant a move to Cleveland.  Working in the office meant I was home every night but as a manager, the schedule was still challenging.  I would work in the office all week and then be expected to go out and fly the line on weekends.  I referred to it as my “5 on 2 on” schedule, because it felt as though I had no time off at all.   About the same time, we moved to Cleveland, my wife and I became “empty nesters,” with one son in the military and the other away at college.  Sadly, my work schedule didn’t leave much time for Sally.  Add to the fact that while Cleveland is an awesome city, I just never felt comfortable expressing my feminine side.  Most of my outings, and believe me there weren’t enough, occurred while I was on vacation and away from home.   One of the most memorable outings occurred over a long weekend.  I had stumbled across an online notice for a spring formal being held in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, hosted by a local trans group there.  I reached out to Willa to see if she was up for an excellent adventure.  She was, so I picked her up and we drove to Harrisburg together.    The formal was held on Saturday evening and we had the absolute best time.  It turned out that organizers were a group named TransCentralPA.  Everyone was wonderful and I made a lot of new friends that evening.  We learned the spring formal was one of the group’s annual events but for the following year, instead of a spring formal, the group wanted to do a local transgender conference.  That local conference would become the Keystone Conference, and I would attend every year for the next 12.  My move to the west coast was the only reason I stopped attending annually.  I went to the first annual Keystone Conference as an attendee, but in subsequent years I served as a volunteer and as a workshop presenter; more about those in the next installment.   For my Cleveland years, the Keystone Conference would be my major outlet for feminine self-expression.  Yes, I did get out on other occasions, but they were too infrequent.  The managerial job just didn’t allow me the freedom I needed to adequately live my feminine life, and my frustration level was slowly, but steadily on the rise.  It amazed me how adversely not being able to express the feminine half of my personality was affecting my happiness.   However, a major life change was upcoming, and while it would prove to be a significant challenge in many ways, the events would ultimately benefit my female persona.  First, my mom and dad got sick.  They were in and out of the hospital and required personal care.  My wife and I did our best but living in Cleveland, we were too far from them to give them the support they both needed.  Second, I was experiencing serious job burn out.  I decided I need to find another job and I needed to be closer to my parents.    Things changed for the better when I got hired by an aviation training company as a flight simulator instructor.  I would be training business jet pilots.  The training facility was located in New Jersey, which put us much closer to my parents, and the work schedule was much better for quality of life.  Most importantly, this life change would help Sally re-emerge and once again flower.    Hugs,   Sally

I made a living talking about bulk liquids in cargo tanks transportation as a driver and mechanic. Safe loading/unloading, cleaning and inspecting, as well as emergency response scenarios.   Hazmat and fire behavior in the fire service as well as emergency vehicle operations and safe driving. "It was on fire when they called you. It will be on fire when you get there." Arrive ready to work. I could also talk about firefighter behavioral  heath and the grieving process.   The real fun thing is I can do this for people who are not Truck Drivers or Fire Fighters. Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Citizen Tax payers about Public Safety Education.   I love public speaking,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Got a new Granddaughter this morning.  Mother and child (and father) are doing fine. This makes 7 granddaughters and one grandson.  I have 2 sons and 6 daughters myself.  And then I  switched teams.  I think this stuff runs in the family. Another hard day for the patriarchy.

Like @MaeBe pointed out, Trump won't do these things personally.  I doubt that he actually gives a rat's a$$ himself.  But he is the foot in the door for the others.   I don't really see this.  Personally, I am all in favor of "traditional" families.  I raised my own kids this way and it can work fine.  But I think we need to allow for other variations as well.   One thing working against this now is how hard it is for a single breadwinner to support a family.  Many people (I know some) would prefer "traditional" if they could actually afford it.  Like I mentioned, we raised our family with this model, but we were always right at the poverty level.   I was a "conservative evangelical" for most of my life, actually.  So I do understand this.  Admittedly, I no longer consider myself one. I have family members still in this camp.  Some tolerate me, one actually rejects me.  I assure you the rejection is on her side, not mine.  But, I understand she believes what she is doing is right - 'sa pity though. I mean no insult toward anyone on this forum.  You're free to disagree with me.  Many people do.   This is a pretty complex one.  Socialism takes many forms, many of which we accept without even realizing it.  "Classism" does exist, for what it's worth.  Always has, probably always will.  But I don't feel like that is a subject for this forum.   As for the election, it's shaping up to be another one of those "hold your nose" deals.

I was thinking in particular of BLM, who years ago had a 'What We Believe' section that sounded like they were at war with the nuclear family.   I tried to find it. Nope.  Of interest https://www.politifact.com/article/2020/aug/28/ask-politifact-does-black-lives-matter-aim-destroy/   My time is limited and I will try to answer as I can.

Well, I suppose it is possible that they don't actually plan on doing what they say.  I'm not too sure I want to take that chance.  But I kinda expect to find out.  Yet, perhaps you're right and it's all just talk.  And anyway, my state GOP is giving me enough to worry about anyway. I remember a time when being "woke" just meant you were paying attention.  Now it means you are the antichrist. I just don't want the government "protecting" me from my personal "delusions."
