Finally, Progress! -- and the anxieties that come with it.

I have always known that I wanted top surgery since I realized I was trans, and I always felt like it was out of my reach. I fought with my insurance, fought to raise funds on my own, and just finally made some breakthroughs.

My insurance has given me criteria for coverage as of last year, and I started a GoFundMe on my own two months ago, and exceeded my goal within a month! I was so overwhelmed by the way in which my community, which is not heavily involved in LGBT+ affairs, supported me wholeheartedly. So now I have the financial means, which was my only obstacle, to pursue top surgery! I'm thrilled!

With that, of course, comes all sorts of feelings. I'm scared of losing my nipples, worried about scar contour, I'm worried about getting COVID before my surgery date, and above all, I'm feeling such a void of engagement and content of other trans voices to celebrate with. I feel hungry to engage with things made by people like me-- youtube videos, books, articles-- yet no one close to me can provide that. I've been filling it as much as I can on my own, but it hasn't been entirely satisfying.

So I'm both excited and anxious, and am doing my best to sit in those feelings as much as I can.

So congratulations? I admit I have similar anxiety over potential top surgery (though mine would go the other way). Sensitivity, scar tissue and appearance are all valid concerns. As is the extra anxiety because we're in the middle of a freaking pandemic and WAY too many people aren't taking that seriously.

But. You have the funds. They're earmarked for your surgery. It's happening. It might be happening later than you like because of circumstances outside your control, but it's happening.

I gotta say though, I don't know where you live but we're about .5% of the population. Asking to have more than a couple in your friend group is just greedy. I mean OK, I have three but I've known one of them since we were sperm and the other two just sort of happened.

Plenty of content out there by trans youtubers though. Enjoy!

Hugs!

Congrats!!

I can understand the virus concern, my family has been taking eXtREME caution which I don't mind because I won't get sick haha.

Do keep up updated when you get your surgery, I would love to know how it goes, and which style the scars are in :DD

@Wrightful welcome - although I'm going the other way - I think it is amazing you received funds for top surgery so quiclkly. You should be extremely proud. You are experiencing anxiety, etc. and that is normal. Don't worry (easier said than done) all of us feel that even if we are 100% sure we need to progress in us transition.

I think you will find Elliot Page coming out a wonderful boom to coverage in the media and videos. There are many your age and FTM's who will understand and dialog with you here. Keep reaching out.

Finally I am proud of you - if you want some great YouTube videos - check Dr. Z Phd Gender Therapist - she is a great resource for understanding and dealing with ALL aspects of transition for trans individuals. Check her out.

Good luck, know you are welcome and I wish you well as you transition.

@Jackie C.

Thank you for the well wishes, validations, and celebrations! I am certainly grateful that it's happening, and I'm grateful for the trans people I have in my life however close or distant.

Thanks Shay! I'll be sure to check out that channel recommendation, and I'm doing my best to control the anxieties and celebrate the small wins.

I really appreciate the celebration and warmth of your reply! I hope your own journey is going as well as it can!

Oh and also I have been informed that you should shave your armpits before you go into surgery, so when they wrap you up, it won't pull on the hairs and cause pain or discomfort :D

Haha, I've heard this too! It feels like there's a million things to juggle while I prepare!

Maybe it could help to make a list, or thread on here to help keep all the thought in one place :DD

And for others to use in the future (I know I will, when I get there)

Wow, I guess it’s the dat to be in trouble.  I’ve been hit twice by the ASM today and it’s my day off.  Why didn’t you, followed latter with a where is the.  Made me realize that I do t want to continue working long enough to pay for it. I guess I’ll just to have to stick with my 20 year old car for now.   I suppose sooner or later only one of us won’t be able to drive anymore.  Since I am older you might think it would be me but at this time i am the one that does all the driving except when she goes to church or the store when I’m at work.  She hasn’t driven anywhere since February and hasn’t driven more than 10 miles in perhaps a year.  Yet the “good” car was purchased for her not for me because she couldn’t drive the Jeep which we bought strictly for her because she wanted it.  But it turned out I was the one that really liked it.  Can’t win.

Had one like that one time that would bite you on occasion.  Got rid of that thing quickly.

I have been told that I "pass" better than I realize. I hope that is true.

Good morning :)   I have coffee today, but the cup keeps leaking (I guess the cap isn't able to fully seal or something), so I keep having to wipe up the sides lol   Almost finished all my missing work for school, which means if I do a bit more work, I should be out of trouble with my parents (not even that bad of trouble compared to when I was younger, more just an annoyance haha)

Sending good thoughts for you, Raine.

Good morning 😘   Finished packing up my kitchen and pantry for fumigation today. I also modified my backpack to make it day-centre compliant.  I was able to get almost 2 hrs sleep last night, so I'll survive. 😑

I'll be going to some Pride events as a spectator.  Maybe marching in a parade if they have open participation.    The event we'd prefer to go to is held in a small town with a population of less than 600.  They have a parade through all three blocks of their downtown area.  Unfortunately, this year it is on the same day as a memorial service for a friend who passed away this winter, so we'll have to miss it.  So our second choice is a larger town, population about 9000, a bit farther away.    And we are keeping our eyes open for other events in the general area as they are announced.   I dress a bit flashier than normal, with some trans bling, such as rainbow or trans flag earrings, a trans symbol pendant, and a handheld trans flag to wave.  Political sentiment is turning against us, but public sentiment here is still strongly on our side, so getting out and showing the flag, both literally and figuratively, is important.

I had that going on with my last two partners who were 20 years older than me.  One of them looked older for her age as well.  I remember a couple times being in the grocery store a decade ago and having people ask "can I help you ladies with something?" and then I'd turn around with my red beard.  Well before I started transitioning, but my partner knew I was trans back then.   I struggle with this as well.  My music and political career can have a masculine edge to it that I don't like.  It's been really frustrating lately.  I don't like pushing myself on others or telling people what to do.  I've been running a website for 25 years and have virtually never tried to promote it or even look at any analytics.  I don't want to push it on anyone.  I put what I have on it and make it publicly available.  It's part of my production process.  It keeps me sane and if someone else can find it useful, then I'm happy to share.

I'm curious, but then if I am true to myself, I have a hard time being in crowds.  I love hearing great music, but being in an audience is such a turnoff for me that I don't go to concerts or bars.  I'm just very much a producer.  I actually like doing the dishes more than going to concerts because it's an active thing.
