There are plenty of statements that updating your gender marker on whatever identification document(s) is very reaffirming, and exciting, and generally awesome ? (and very very happy and excited for and with you). 

However, nobody seems to talk about what happens after the change. I am sure this would be beneficial to know for those doing it now, or considering in the future (myself included).

 

What are the unexpected/unplanned things you had to deal with after the gender marker update?

I see what you are asking about but in reality once I updated my marker there was no big change except for my own internal feeling of satisfaction.  Contacting whatever entity that might need this new data would involve outing yourself and that can be disconcerting but it seemed life went on, as it should.

I certainly had to go through a long list of places where I needed to get my gender marker changed, but they had all been OK a year before when my name had been changed which in itself was a non-issue, a look at the court order and oingo boingo they took it and I saw the results in ten days, with one little exception being my retirement system, where the copy of the court order got put on the wrong desk in their legal branch where it sat waiting for another piece of court wall paper until I got on an ombudsman line with them and my next paycheck came out fine although the bank it went to had been OK cashing it. The nice thing came shortly after when I became eligible for senior discounts and they did not believe I was as old as I really am.  My GCS was 8 years ago and at that time had to be done in my state for changing the gender marker, but the time I was through the red-tape, of course, they changed that.  Grin and bear it while that is going on and you will do fine.  I still rate the name and gender change on paper and ID's to really have done more for my self esteem than the actual surgery, but what do I know.

Yes, going though just name updates over the last 6-8 months caused plenty of moments to "out" myself. On the bright side with experiences it makes it matter less and less.

What I am wondering if there will be some impact to health-related situations. For example, certain gender-specific preventative exams (prostate/cervix checks) - would they still be covered and offered in time, or is it my responsibility to track and know when to worry? And things like this.

As a customer was recently telling me - "I don't know what I don't know"

Places where it may be relevant are getting fewer and fewer.  In the past it did cause some trouble, but the major insurance carriers for health insurance have gotten to be OK with it , which is where it would matter in "coding" for procedures.  My HMO and Insurance Carrier are the same, and my master file does show that "Transgenderism" has been a major health issue for me and my surgery just shows in my surgeries list.  They have been trained to take it without comment and just go for it and since I have my preferred pronouns on the master chart as well, things are smooth.  I have been in Florida several times and the people I have met are great and don't react badly.

@VickySGV I guess I will need to figure out how to cross when I get to that bridge. Hopefully, it will be just another "duh, just make appointment and we got this".
