Heels turned my toe nail black

How do I prevent this from happening?

I have 3" chunky heeled ankle boots that I really love to wear.  As far as heels go, they're actually not uncomfortable, and my toes didn't feel "squished" by the front of the boot.  However after wearing them 3 weekends in a row, I guess the repeated trauma of my big toe hitting the top of the boot as I walked was too much, and part of it turned black.

I ordered some ballet inserts that go over all the toes to protect them.  It remains to be seen if they will work.

Three inch heels do put stress on the foot and your toes.  Obviously you are not feeling pain but you are not treating your toes well.  I would stay with flats or at best 1.5" heels.  They are easier to walk in and better for your feet.
