Just So Ordinary Looking --

Last night during a conversation I had with members of a Trans singing group, where every performer is a Trans person, one of them reported that after a performance, a person who had been in the audience came up to them and while telling them it was a great performance, the audience member had had one disappointment.  The audience member had come to the performance specifically to see what a Trans person looked like, and didn't see any there and that disappointed them.  Mind you, they said this TO a Trans person.  They were truly happy to hear the music and gave a set of wonderful compliments on how the chorus members performed and the quality of their sound, but the Chorus did not look like Trans people, they were just so ORDINARY looking.

I have actually had that happen to me in other situations in the 12 years I have been out and simply living.  We hear a lot of racket about how noticeable we are and how fake we seem, but even I have pulled a dirty trick on one person who had not "read" me.  They swore they could pick out a single Trans person in the bleachers across the ballpark from them at a Major League Baseball game.  I had a bunch of pictures of my Trans Friends on my I-phone and challenged him to tell me which one was Trans.  If he had picked ANY of the people I showed him, he would of course been right, but he accused me of trying to trick him.  One of the pictures was ME, for heavens sake!!

One of the other Trans folks last night came back with the final word, that in reality, we probably are a pretty boring bunch once you get to know us.   SIGH!!!

I have to agree!

It makes you wonder what others are expecting to see?  (Move along, nothing here to see)

It frequently occurs to me that people who hold negative biases of trans folk would possibly be forced to question their beliefs if they became aware of how many trans individuals they actually encounter in their day to day lives. To those who express bias, I sometimes ask - how many trans people do you know personally? They usually say none, to which I reply, ...that you know of! - which is basically the point I'm trying to make.

*Snerk* A LOT of people conflate us with drag queens. I mean, sure, there are people who fit that stereotype but they are not the majority.

Hugs!
