Trans-friendly Occupations

I've have a majority of my general education requirements fullfilled in college right now, but have yet to declare a major or even give it much thought. What are some occupations that won't disqualify or fire me because of transitioning and what not? I already know that it's an instant discharge in the military, probably the same with most fields of crimincal justice, and teachers as well.

That is a hard question to answer due to the fact that if you get fired from your job because you started to transition and you were able to prove it, it could lead to a law suite. But I think you could get any job as long as when you start you present yourself in the gender/sex that you want to be recognized in.

I don't have a lot of experience in private industry, but I think the majority of non-law enforcement

government jobs would be fairly liberal in their treatment of gender-gifted employees.

You're right about the teaching profession though. I have heard of some cases that were publicized and came

out well, but its a crap shoot. Depends on the community and the politics of the school board.

The psychology/social work professions seem to be more accepting of all diversity.

Government type jobs such as the post office seem fairly safe...There is a lot of security in unions, too...

But, it's hell out there for folks that aren't Transgendered....Think how it is for us....

If you want a happy life, find something to do for a living that you have a passion for. Warren Buffet was recently quoted as saying, "If you're not happy and skipping on your way to work, you need to find another occupation".

It looks to me like a lot of us are too wrapped up in gender identity to get the big picture. If your main mission in life is to change your outward appearance to match your inner self, that goal can be achieved in relatively short order (considering your life expectancy). You'll now appear to the world, and be accepted as, the gender you prefer. OK, great, now what? Take a job you hate because you'll be accepted?

Obviously, some jobs are out of the question, such as teaching and contact with kids. Fair enough. Think about yourself, think about things that interest you and start working from there.

Look at this from the opposite way and see if it looks different. Everyone should seek out their passions and see if there's some way to make a living at it. It some cases, that may not be possible, but there may be something else that you like that will bankroll the passion.

It's hard to say what would be a good career to get into since jobs are difficult lately.

My suggestion of a career to avoid...school bus driver. The kids will drive you insane.

Yeah, there are lots of trans therapists I've heard of, mostly counseling other trans/queer people

I can personally Vouche for Psychology (The Career field i'm entering) However it depends on what aspect you want to do. Theres the Physical study of the brain's functions, Personality development, Mental Illness-Diagnosis-Treatment, Theraputic, Child Psychology, and many more aspects.

All depends on what you prefer in terms of intreast.

Other fields simular are Sociology and Anthropology.

I have a post FFS friend who transitioned while teaching in elementary school. So it worked for her. She is in special education

This is also generally the industry that I'm in...a VERY male oriented, macho, world!

Although, I've known many of these people for 20 years and watched their kids grow up....

I'm not sure what to expect when I come out.......

But, this is the industry that I know and I'll remain in it if I'm not blacklisted...

It's gonna get REAL interesting....
