Psychiatrist Evaluation for GCS letter

-Warning, possible trigger warning for shared thoughts below-

I have been seeing a licensed therapist for nearly a year regarding my gender identity concerns. I am 6 months along on GAHT, 3 months along with LTE, and I would like to proceed with scheduling surgeries, and the waiting list is lengthy for my chosen surgeon.

He will not schedule without my letters and my insurance requirea that one letter be written by a psychiatrist or psychologist.

I finally have an appointment to see a psychiatrist, and I am afraid of not receiving a confirming diagnosis. In my heart I am sure, and logically my history should support a diagnosis, but suddenly I am tempted to leave out information concerning my doubts or behaviors atypical of transgender youth. It is bringing to the front all my fears surrounding the question, "Am I trans enough?"

I know I have to and should be open and honest with this psychiatrist, but I am terrified of being told, "Nope, your not trans. You're just crazy and sick."

Sorry if that triggers any of you. I hope you don't think less of me for having these fears. But I don't think many without our shared experiences could understand.

Saoirse

Please remember the basic instructions on breathing, one breath in  for every breath out and keep them in order.  There are no right or wrong answers for the Psychiatrist.  None of us is TYPICAL in the nature of a checklist to see that we are Trans.  Whatever you have done about it, if your feelings of Dysphoria have been Consistent over a long period of time' if the feeling has Persisted and not gone rapidly back and forth, and has gotten more and more Insistent that it is your way to be happy and productive in life.  It is if you are dishonest with the Psychiatrist that you will tend to hurt yourself and chances.  Your surgery is the only road to your happiness and you are owning it with clear mind and conscience.

I agree.  Don't worry unnecessarily.   Be honest with them.

You don't have to fit the "standard narrative".  The standard narrative was written by muggles.  There is no such thing as "behaviors atypical of transgender youth".  We come in all shapes and sizes and behaviours and levels of awareness.

I was sent to a psychiatrist for one of my letters because that was the easiest way to meet the various letter requirements.  It ended up being a three and a half hour drive, each way, for a 30 minute appointment!  Yup, just 30 minutes.  The questions she asked were super-basic, basically trying to distinguish between various psychiatric disorders and gender dysphoria.  Just tell the truth and you'll be fine.

As my friends have said, there is no litmus test for being trans, there is no one-size-fits-all way of behaving or thinking or dressing.  They will NOT be looking for a way of saying no to you.  They have no reason for wanting to stop your progress until you do or say something that fits their needs.  Please don't worry, hon, you'll be fine.

Hello @Saoirse 2! Honey, you know yourself better than anyone. Go in and just be yourself. Don't try to convince them of anything. Just be honest and talk to them like they're your friend. They are there to help. Take a listen to this podcast, this may help you.

If you are already on HRT, it's probably just going to be a formality. The letter isn't about whether or not you have the right diagnosis, it's about, "are you prepared mentally to change things surgically?" They want to make sure you have thought things through, have support networks in place, have been living in your target gender role etc etc.  Case in point, if you haven't come out to your family/ friends, they may feel you aren't ready for surgery.  There will be some basic questions about how long have you felt this way and stuff but the standard in mental health circles nowadays is pretty much if you say you're trans, you're trans. Now, I know some providers won't write a letter if they haven't spent some time with you. They also may not write a letter until you've hit the 1 year mark on HRT.   Have you told your therapist you are going in to see him for a letter? Your therapist might send something over to the Dr about your treatment history.

Don't sweat things though. Just be you. I don't think I've ever heard of someone being denied a letter because the Dr didn't think you are trans enough ;)

Thanks everyone. I had my appointment and it was a positive experience. It is going to take, apparently, about 3 sessions, and they are so booked that  may stretch out another 6 months, but at least I am in the queue.

One coincidentally good thing is that by the time these sessions are complete, I will have been on HRT for over a year, so that won't be a reason to delay the 2nd letter.

I also have been reflecting that I need to enjoy and explore where I am in transition now. Yes, I want to continue, and yes, I feel some urgency because of my (advanced) years. But that is no reason to rob myself of really being me today. I went out to dinner

and then clothes shopping with my daughter a few days ago, what a wonderful time!

Welcome.   This can be a good sounding board and a place to say things you otherwise could not. Be yourself. Find out what that is.   Abby

I'm wearing a white t shirt and jeans.  The t-shirt is softer than a man's and slightly girly.  Feeling kinda pretty.

That's very common in internet forums and it is hard not to take it personally sometimes.   You might post "bump" with a smiley face to bring it to the top of the stack, or you might use the @ feature if there are certain people you would really like to have comment on it, and say something like Dear Abby, I would really like your input on this.  Please take a minute and respond.  Thanks!!!

The same for me... That's exactly were MmIndy came from. I started choosing female skins as soon as they became available in the few games I played.   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Something else I noticed @Ladypcnj Since I use the Unread tab, I don't see threads I've read again until someone replies to it, or the author adds something.   Hugs,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Good morning @Ladypcnj   Some posts get lost in the busy times here. It also maters how people navigate the site. Some only look at their notifications, or tap the All Activity tab which shows them thread they've commented on. (how I see it)... I on the other hand use the Unread tag under Activity. I don't think people ignore post as much as they get caught up reading threads they've already been active in.   Best wishes, stay positive, and motivated,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

What to do if post is being ignored?

Oh yeah, I forgot,    @awkward-yet-sweetwhen your husband finally breaks down and decides to replace the stoves I agree a single professional stove even out of a defunct restaurant might well be the way to go when cooking for all those kids and adults. Certainly better that the situation you describe.  Or maybe from a used restaurant supply where they have professionally cleaned and refurbished it.

Wow, yesterday was a very active day.     @Birdie I hope they figure out where that’s coming from and get you heeled quickly. That it’s nothing serious.  Maybe going to the day care with a purewick will finally convince them to change their attitude.   @MaeBe  especially if you believe you are about to loose your job anyway, what’s to keep you in Minnesota ?  This could be a wonderful thing for all of you Washington State can be wet but it’s really not as bad as it’s made out to be.  If you are west of the cascades it is relatively mild not like MN in the winter time.  And east of the cascades it’s rather desert like around Yakima.     New car shopping can be fun but it can be very stressful too.  We talked about it over lunch yesterday. Strange thing is she kept coming back to the old Ford.  My response was instead of two car payments there woul only be one although I would expect it to be a little higher, but not nearly what two would add up .  Plus I wouldn’t have to continue working as long with only one as when I get the other things paid off I know we can live without me working.  Unless of course, the congress decides to mess with social security.  Right now I have three vehicles I want to look at two are at one dealer and the third at another.  All three are GMs two are newer with lower mileage but are also lower end on the GM line.  The third which is the one that most interests me is a Cadillac.  Let’s see there is a song from way back about a Cadillac and a Hot Rod Lincoln comes to mind.  Anyway it is an XT-5. I get my room and comfort, she gets her nice appointments and the ford hopefully will hang on as a spare for those occasions when we need a second car for me to go to work and for her to do ??  The downside is it has just under 80,000 miles and is a 2020 so in that regard we are slipping backwards from a 2022 with 25000  but going from a sub-compact to a mid-size.  The other two are a compact and a Midsize but neither would provide the expected comfort and features of the Cadillac.  The biggest of which are the pedals that would adjust and the seat adjustments. (My wife is 4’ 10” and I am 5’8” since my spine has shrunk.  The Caddy also has the lane safety as well as front and rear collision warning.  The mileage will go down and the engine requires higher octane gas but that won’t be too much of a drag since we can go to Murphy USA where I work or to Costco which isn’t that far away. 10 miles.  And it’s better than the Ford!   I guess we will see how this plays out later.   Willow

Two things amaze me, One how fast short haired dogs dry. Two how did you keep from loosing your glasses? I'm glad you wear a life jacket while kayaking even on smooth waters such as ponds or lakes. I'm guessing you learned a few things about landing and exiting the kayak.    Hugs,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Aside from the X-Files, Gilmore Girls is easily my favorite TV show. I originally watched the original airing in the commuter lounge at my college starting in 2000 because I was embarrassed to watch it at home when I living as a man. Now that I am out and transitioned, I watch it openly and wear Gilmore Girls t-shirts at work on days that I wear a skirt. For Valentine’s Day, my wife bought me the DVD’s. Yesterday I had to stay at work late because of an IT problem (I am not IT so I just had to make sure the pump stations telemetry was functioning properly before I could leave, IT did the actual work) and so I watched it on Netflix. Lorelai Gilmore inspired me to change my name to Lorelei. Yes, I picked a more traditional spelling on the name. The mother daughter interaction between them is heartwarming and sometimes hilarious. Last week I just started rewatching it again. Ironically I relate most to Luke, very rare as I almost always relate to a female character. Anyone else here love the show?
