There are some research findings presented in this article that may result in my changing my mind about the fairness issue.  I need to look into those studies and see what else is out there.  But even if true, those findings would mostly impact trans athletes who recently (< 3 years ago) medically transitioned.  Some of the decisions being made are regards to women who transitioned years ago, or who never underwent male puberty.  As is often the case, it's a complex issue with a big grey area.  But if I don't want to be accused of hypocrisy, I have to abide by the science.

Yeah.  I expect there is a difference between an adult that recently started HRT and a trans-girl that never went through male puberty.  That need to be considered.  You can't have a one size fits all approach.  That's the problem with a lot of these laws.

Update:  I heard this evening from a well known and well read trans activist that both researchers cited in the article are trans-critical extremists, and their research is biased.  But that opinion may also be biased.  It's tough when studies are not independently peer reviewed.  The search for reliable data continues...

Interesting that Caitlyn Jenner has come out in favor of some kind of discriminatory practice in sport. One would have thought that she should have a fair amount of insight, given her history. (Not that she's my favorite person when it comes to views on the subject of trans...)

But it's a tough question, and ultimately one has to follow where the science leads.

It's impossible to ban trans athletes without being bigoted.

When the IOC was testing for testosterone levels, "to ensure fairness", they ended up excluding 2 cis women.

Athletes train their whole lives and most have some form of physical advantage that they then utilise by putting in the time and effort to get good - height in basketball, big feet/reach in swimming. The IOC has realised that being trans in and of itself does not give an automatic advantage, apologised for triggering all of this harm by their pervious policies and told each sport to be inclusive, any guidelines for participation based on separation of gender should be based on human rights, robust evidence and athlete consultation.

If trans athletes are good enough for the olympics which is the elitist of elite sports competitions, then it should be good enough for the rest of society too.

I'll start by saying I have no clue whether trans athletes have an advantage. I maintain that we honestly don't yet know whether is an advantage or not. There isn't a lot research that has been done and it is difficult research to do. As with all science there will be controversy. I think this is an issue that needs to looked at from the perspective of elite competition and separately from the perspective of letting people participate in parts of life.

For the latter, especially children before puberty should allowed to be themselves, have fun and experience all of the benefits of team and individual sports for building life skills.

While I'm sure that bigotry does play a role in some of the arguments against transgender competition at the elite level. I also believe that inherent fairness play a significant role in this issue. I compete in triathlons nowhere near an elite level. I did qualify for USA triathlon age group nationals but finished at the bottom of pack. There are a number of competitive aspects that are argued at that level. For example, should former professional triathletes be able to compete for championships with age group athletes?

Fundamentally the fairness issues is very difficult because it is a concept more than a specific determination. It affects many people and most have a reasonable stake in the discussion. I don't see how one can ignore how long and hard women fought to be able compete broadly as well as have access to similar training resources. As a competitor I know how it feels when you are not good enough to compete with those that will win the competition. Most sports are adjusted for age with age group categories. An 80 year old no matter how talented will not beat the best 20 and 30 year olds.

Science is fairly strong that testosterone offers many benefits in building strength and power. I also believe that is generally recognized that cis males are larger and stronger than cis females which provides an advantage in many sports thus they compete based on those categories. I struggle to see why one can't accept how the elite female competitor may feel that they do not have a chance to win. It could be bigotry,  it could be ignorance but right now we dealing with opinions. In my view, it is unfortunate that the reaction to the largely political debate has led some sporting bodies to make the standards more difficult. I include both sides of the argument in the political, there is a fine line between advocacy and extremism. I try to allow myself to change my mind when presented with information that challenges what I believe. But also to recognize when presented with a fact or an opinion.

I can only hope that discussion leads to research and investigation that leads to a better solution.

“Given the important role played by muscle strength and power in bike riding performance, the UCI has decided to increase the transition period on low testosterone from 12 to 24 months.”

“I understand how you’d come to this conclusion because a lot of people still view trans women as men with male anatomies and physiologies,” she said in an interview with DIVA magazine. “But hormone replacement therapy has such a massive effect. The aerobic performance difference is gone after about four months.

“There are studies going on for trans women in sport. I’m doing one and the performance drop-off that I’ve seen is massive. I don’t have any advantage over my competitors and I’ve got data to back that up.”

Wow, Birdie, I hope you get better soon.  At least the nurses figured out that you're not their standard patient.  Hopefully they treat you right.     I wish my husband would replace our stoves.  Of course we use propane, being way out of town, but they're old.  They are supposed to use a battery igniter, but one hasn't worked in years.  There's actually a hole sawed in the bottom plate of the oven where I stick a match.  And the other one had some sort of valve problem, and couldn't get the parts.  I was hoping for a new stove, but I got to watch in awe and dismay as my husband made a "something" with a piece cut from a roll of bulk automotive gasket material.  It works, no leaks.  But I swear we don't replace anything here until it is absolutely dead.  With my luck, that will be another 20 years on those stoves.      I don't complain much, but I wish I had some nicer kitchen things.  Nobody understands that if I'm serving dinner for 36 people, cooking on sheetmetal plates or using stuff from a 1980s junkyard is a bit....suboptimal.  When I mention it, I get lengthy apocalyptic tales of the deprived life in Argentina or Mexico or "In Soviet Union, stove cooks you..."  Thanks, GF.  Or maybe I'm just too spoiled?

I do the best I can to 'Pass' and I think I have become better at feminizing my appearance ... But, I have also come to realize that no matter how much I feel I pass, it's more up to the individual I interact with than with my efforts and appearance. If they are self-aware humans they will see me as I truly am ... and then I will receive a compliment, or a 'Ma'am', or just a friendly smile.  That's all I really need.

In my case, at almost 9 months, most changes have been very subtle. I was 60 when I started, and overweight. Also, I am not very observant when it comes to changes. In the last 3 months I have been on T blockers and breast growth have definitely started having suffered irregular "ouchies", but at the same time I have been slowly losing fat, so Bust measurements have not changed. What has changed in the density, I can feel a difference. Face wise the skin feels softer, and my lashes seem to be more visible. Head hair regrowth is a maybe- maybe not situation.  I do have to select men's clothing carefully to camouflage the change in breast shape. I guess I'm still at the not passable as a female stage especially with no makeup. I'm also over 6 foot and well over 100kgs which I guess is problematic to start with!   Hope this helps somewhat   Kate .

I started feminizing HRT about 6-7 weeks ago. I began with what I called the beginner's patch. I immediately found myself wanting to level up to the next dose and did that this week (yay!). So far, I am enjoying the ride.   I've read everything I can find on this topic. For the HRT vets on here, what is reasonable to expect in terms of physical changes for someone starting in their 50s? I know "your mileage may vary." I guess I am curious if I stay on my current trajectory for six months, a year, multiple years, how pronounced will the physical changes be? Will I reach a point where it is totally obvious or will I land in a "middle zone" somewhere in which I could pass either way?   Thanks! Like I said I am enjoying the ride so far and always curious to know others' experiences. Not sure anyone else in my life will be excited about these moves I am making, but I have been over that in many places on here already so need to rehash... Love and blessings to all!   Easy

Being admitted into the hospital after a long ER visit. I started passing lots of blood and they are keeping me for observation.    Nurse came in to see about a condom catheter, that of course doesn't work on me. 🤣   She said, "I guess we will use incontinence supplies on you."

Yeah.  I think this is what it is about.  Since they are not transgender, nobody else could possibly be either.  I'm not sure that a cisgender person can understand being transgender.  But that hardly means that a transgender person's experience is not real - just because it is not theirs. Why is a transgendered person's experience not valid, while a cisgendered person's is?  Why should it be the cisgendered person that decides? Nobody is forcing a cis person to transition.  What I do for myself is my own business.

I've been thinking it is a matter of belief.  They simply do not believe someone can validly be transgender and should not be allowed to practice their beliefs, but should be forced to practice their belief, that is, that there is no such thing as transgender and it is all mental illness/sin/hormonal imbalance.

I am really kind of sick of everybody who is not transgender deciding on what we need and do not need in the way of procedures. They act like all of this is play acting, and we can just apply cosmetics to our entire body. It might be refreshing if someone asked us directly what services we need in order to transition. I could say more as I am frustrated, but I do not want to violate the TOS.
