Christians are a mixed bag.  You have to look at them individually, like anyone else.

An interview with the latest president of the Southern Baptist Convention really opened my eyes to how I can be guilty of pre-judging and stereotyping.  This guy really surprised and impressed me, and I was okay with his views - until they got to the "gay" issue. I'm surprised that Anderson Cooper maintained his composure at that point.

This my last comment regarding Christianity in this thread, as I don't want to stir up a hornet's nest. There's a lot of people who call themselves Christians but might not be, or simply pay lip service to the faith. Christ himself says in both Matthew 7:21 and Luke 6:46 that many will call him "Lord, Lord" and neither do what he says nor enter the Kingdom of Heaven. I think that pretty much speaks volumes.

As a practicing Calvinist Christian (I keep practicing in the hope that some day I manage to get it right) I am firmly in the camp that believes, as Calvin stated in his Institutes, humanity in general is so "depraved" (his word, not mine) that we manage to corrupt everything we touch, including the church. Don't confuse Christians with either Christianity as a whole, or with the stances of various denominations or congregations. The point was that despite the near universal condemnation of Christians as a whole due to the actions or beliefs of a single church or group.

And, @Ivyall I can say regarding that particular group of elders you mention is that their actions were not in keeping with Christ's teaching, nor were they being particularly charitable.

For the record, I mentioned both Samaritan's Purse and the Martha's Vineyard Episcopal church solely because they were in the news recently and thus familiar. There are plenty of other Christian groups out there that do good works I just chose to go with the low hanging fruit.
