Next frontier... Equal marriage rights for those of us who have multiple partners.  I can hope, right?

Well, it is Biblical.

Exactly! Which is how my faith community sees it.

I don't understand all the conservatives who scream about marriage being between one man and one woman. They don't seem to read the text clearly.  The only ban on multiple wives was in the New testament and was directed at spiritual leaders, not the majority of the population.

After a full year of study and classes on Marriage Law here in California, marriage boils down to PROPERTY laws and how property and rights of control will stay in the family and how society will keep it that way.  In Europe of the 10K's (Luther and Henry VIII being 1500's) it particularly applied to Royal and Noble titles to the jobs of ruling and real estate ownership in those countries.  Spouses and Children as well as farm animals and slaves all come under the heading of Marital Property.  A big question was WHAT property a man got from marrying a specific woman, and there was more than one marriage based on the best property deal.  They decidedly did not have our views of voluntary loving relations or even practical relations, and most laws are still rooted in those old concepts.  That was just secular law at that.  Religious laws put their own twists, but still property lines. (Oh yeah, the Church was the secular ruler in too many places throughout history).  We are still too enmeshed in those old ideas and do not have the ability at the minute to craft new and better laws or customs that will really take care of the problem.  SIGH!!

(Note: I do belong to a church who gets my moeny regularly, I am not anti-religion.  The donation is a TAX write-off.)

@VickySGV  Well, I agree to a point.  Legal marriage is about property, transference of wealth, etc...  I wish I had some of the automatic protections it offers.  However, I think the one-man-one-woman marriage pattern was made the only pattern to prevent accumulation of wealth by those who might threaten the royalty/elites.  My family is very prosperous because "many hands make light work."  Seven young/middle-aged adults under one big roof reduces living costs, reduces tax burden, provides free childcare, etc.

It also reduces the pressure on a woman to procreate.  Think about it - if a man is only allowed one wife and he has to reproduce, an infertile woman gets discarded or cheated on.  Yes, modern science has changed some of that, but not completely.  And somebody like me?  My mean-tongued mother was right about me to a certain extent.  According to the medieval pattern, my skinny infertile and intersex body is worthless to a "traditional" marriage. 🙄 That world would have no place for me, but I can make a worthwhile contribution to my family helping to raise my partners' kids.

I'm glad we have legal protection for same-sex, transgender, and interracial marriages.  We just have a bit further to go so that people like me can have equal opportunity for legal marriage if we want it.

From the study of the actual history of the times, you are in fact saying this awkwardly but close to the real situation..  The Royalty of the times wanted to consolidate the wealth and land rights ONLY in their class and relatives.  Later on the Merchant class would arise and gain their own powers which did lead to colonialism, but that was later on.  There had been a theory then of "True Royal Blood Lines being necessary for a person to be a King or Noble or Clergyman at the Bishop level of the church.   Modern day genetics has ruled that out.

In this statement, I actually was referring to your family structure which I accept as a family and situation that is a valuable asset to current life and fully agree that we need to reimagine .into what families really are.  Poly families have existed successfully in the past and in some senses the re-arranging of marriage by divorces and serial re-marriage shoots close to what you have.

The more I think about that statement, the more it seems like a tragedy.

Before same-sex marriage became legal, I recall a common sentiment from conservatives: "Why not let 'em marry?  Then they can be just as unhappy as the rest of us.".😒. I think that the lack of permanence in American marriage is something to grieve over.  Serial marriage in that way doesn't remotely resemble my family.

It feels weird to think that my marriage (being encouraged and enforced by my community) is more binding than the state's legal marriage which is supposedly "more legitimate."
