Gumption means “courage and confidence,” or in other words, “initiative.”

Cool word, gumption. I like the word skookum. It means the same as gumption though closer to "mensch" in Yiddish. It's a first nations word from the Salish tribes of western British Columbia. I once worked for a farmer who was Salish. One day when I was feeling "way too girlish" and hateful towards myself, he called me skookum and explained the word. He somehow knew I was fighting a difficult inner battle and wanted to help. I'll never forget it or him. The story helps me often. How important is it to be really seen?
