The Abnormal Exhibit

(This came out less clear than I intended, so to speak.)

Dear Zookeeper,

Why am I not like other animals?

Why don’t I look like the lions, leopards, or lemurs?

Why don’t I move like the sharks, seals, or snakes?

Why don’t I act like goats, guerrillas, or giraffes?

I know I’m different and in fact, a part of my wants to be a bit different, y’know? Like an extra spot, stripe, or even a star!

But I can’t help but think about what it’s like to be a regular zoo animal…

Zookeeper, why am I different that the other unusual animals?

Why am I different in a different way than a pink chimpanzee, or a green hippo, or a indigo bear?

Why am I not like the elephant that dances or the penguins in suit and ties or the parrot hanging upside down?

Why is there no one like me?

I know every animal is unique, but I’m tired of thinking I’m completely alone!

There’s no way that I’m the only exhibit that’s as abnormal as I am. So then…

Why does it feel like it?

I’m tired of this empty case!

I’m tired of being the only exhibit who is one-of-a-kind!

I just want to be a stereotypical, average, animal.

Whether that be an orange tiger or a leaping sloth.

I want to be normal enough to not have a novel as my information plaque.

I want to be normal enough to be in the main exhibits and have small children press their faces against the glass to look at me.

What do you think?

Sincerely,

The abnormal exhibit

Ps: when is it feeding time?

Thoughts. Who is the Zookeeper? There must be a lot known about the one-of-a-kind creature for there to be a novel's worth of information, as opposed to a brief statement. Who wrote the novel and from whose perspective? Is it an accurate depiction? It seems the highly unique creature would attract more spectators than would the more well known ones. Would attracting the desired spectators be satisfying in practice?
