Despite his brutal and oppressive tactics, Putin has framed his war as somehow defending "christian values."  He has an unbelievable amount of rightwing support even here, in the US.

The article suggests that the anti LGBT propaganda in having an affect on public opinion.  I'm afraid that is happening here as well.

I doubt that much of the support in the USA has to do with "Christian values."  Most believers around here don't see instigating a war as something decent Christians do.  And the anti-trans connection between US recent events and Russian recent policies probably doesn't have much of a connection.  I doubt it enters the minds of the vast majority of folks in the USA.

My area is generally pro-Russia and anti-Ukraine.  It mostly has to do with disliking our high taxes and sending taxpayer-funded weapons to a foreign war we have no business supporting....not to mention risking WW3.  And gas prices - the war would be over and things would be relatively normal if the folks in DC weren't propping up Zelensky.  And Biden - because we don't like him and he's very connected to the current regime in Ukraine.  And because Putin is a nationalist rather than a globalist...even though we aren't exactly in favor of the Russian way of doing things, we can't fault a Russian leader for being pro-Russia.  And we really wish we had an American leader who was pro-America instead of the current White House occupant.

And just invading your neighbors is fine.   After all, might make right, no?

Im thinking more about his actions overall since the 90s.  I'm not sure that there's a "good" side in this war...it just...is.

One might argue that during the days when the US was at its height, our forces did similarly. We got territory from it...it wasn't all done with the Louisiana purchase.

Oh, definitely.  Actually from its beginning.

What-aboutism isn't an excuse, or justification.

Humanity has a history of this.

Indeed.  And it seems like most political choices are something along the lines of "which atrocity would you rather have?"  Given the choice between nationalist and globalist, I'd pick the nationalist any day, in spite of the issues that go along with that.  That's the root of any support you'll find in the USA for Putin.  I don't think folks have illusions about how he does things.

I do think that some in America have illusions about what our own government does, which could be why the current conflict exists.  We should have been able to become allies and trading partners with Russia after the fall of the Soviet regime.
