It's a shame she lost, but I'm sure it's not the last we'll hear from her.

 

The reporter misgendered Swayne twice, so it's likely deliberate.  😡

It's going to be really hard to win in a "Red State" for transgender. At least she had the guts to do it and hopefully she will keep fighting for it in the future.

I noticed that too.  Looking at her photo, I don't see how anybody could "accidentally" misgender her at this point.  She's cute!   However, I suspect I know a couple of reasons why she lost the election: 

 

"Swayne, who would have been the state’s first transgender lawmaker, reportedly received tens of thousands in out-of-state contributions from several LGBTQ organizations funding his campaign, including from activist David Hogg." 

 

In a Southern red state, out-of-state involvement can offend even traditionally Democratic voters, as many feel strongly about local control and local funding.  The seat she was trying to fill had belonged to a Democrat, so it was certainly possible to win.  Note the involvement of David Hogg.  Even many Democrat voters in the South will not usually vote for somebody receiving funds from anti-gunners, especially in a city with rising crime rates.  The man who won the election is a former police officer.

 

Also, she appears to be Caucasian.  District 55 is 70% African American.  The previous representative was African American, as is the new representative.  A candidate is more likely to win if they appear to belong to the community they represent - a lot of voting comes down to a feeling of "that person understands me."  Silvia might be a better fit for a different district, and if she chooses her support more wisely she could win if she tries again.
