Darkness As A Friend

Darkness as a Friend

Too often as we view the world, we see it bathed in a harsh and blinding light,

We fail to observe the beauty that is hidden from us in the dim shadows.

We see the day as our friend, opposed by its evil usurper, the sinister night,

Afraid to search the dark, least we might find a variety of human lows.

The thought that nothing exists in the night that doesn’t in the day,

Comforts no one afraid of spiders, snakes and small or high places.

It only confirms these fears, with limited sight, how do you keep them away,

Are they just beyond sight just beyond reach and how large are the spaces?

So you sleep with a light on, the cure for all fears,

Within a light no monster appears.

You turn on a radio to cover all sounds of alarm,

What you can’t hear can do you no harm.

But what you can’t see is quite another matter this reaches the depths of our fears,

Encompassing falling, failing, hideous beasts and deepest of all the unknown.

Without sight a creak becomes a footstep, a thump a resounding blast in our ears,

Nothing to confirm or negate what lurks in the gloom that shrouds your home.

You’ve been told from your youth, “There is nothing to fear, so turn out your light,

Your room’s just the same in the night as it was in the day.”

You grow older but the fears won’t subside, you’re too old for a fear of the night,

Hide the feelings of dread that with darkness come to stay.

Try instead of lying abed counting your fears,

Lie still in the darkness testing your ears.

When you hear a creak, no footsteps approaching,

Think of a campfire with fresh trout poaching.

That thump was never really a harbinger of doom,

Just don’t let your cat sleep in your room.

Darkness is not a time to lie in fear, ignorance and all of the world’s hate,

It’s the time to take your imagination out of storage for a while.

You go to the gym to work your body, burn fat and get in shape,

So go to bed and exercise your mind, let your imagination run a mile.

One of your best - interesting subject.

My demons always come at about 3:00 AM - that's when I get up and post at Laura's. Of my three children all were born within five miutes of 3:00 o'clock - one in the day, two in the night. My first wife died at 3:02 PM. Coincidently I married my first wife and second wife at a scheduled 3:00 PM - I married my current wife at 3:15 PM. I guess it is tied in with my destiny.

I will die at 3:00 maybe. Donno night or afternoon. I hope it isn't in the darkness.

Dark reply - sorry

Lizzy
