Some Advice On Finding A Qualified Therapist, Please

Hi everybody! Does anyone have any advice on the best way to find a qualified therapist? I've tried looking for a gender specialist, but it just seems like either they don't exist in my area or they simply don't advertise themselves as 'gender therapists'. I'm willing to randomly cold call from the phone book, but I don't even know what to ask. Are there any keys to finding somebody that is not just an all-in-one therapist when they don't openly announce it?

Thanks so much for any help y'all can provide!

Love,

Sara

There is a list on this website somewhere. Or you could search on Google, or maybe ask your regular doctor. Or go in to see a regular counselor/therapist. He might be good enough for you, and if not, he might know. Or you could try the phonebook if that's what you want to do. There's several ways.

These are the two that we have listed for SC. Are either one of these near you?

I hope one of those therapists works out for you Sara. :D

Oh and if anyone in the DC metro area that can get to Old Town Alexandria and needs a therapist I would recommend Eleanor Criswell, Ph.D. I feel like I had a instant rapport with her. Just a note though her contact info in the list is out of date. Her address has changed to 312 S. Washington Street Suite 3B, Alexandria, VA 22314-3631

Thanks for the responses! Unfortunately, it appears that Dr. Hammond passed away in 2004 (http://pn.psychiatryonline.org/cgi/content/full/39/12/14-a), and Thomas J. Portney, while alive, is a 3 hour drive from where I live, which is a bit of a hike.

So I guess my question would be, if were to randomly call a therapist, are there are any questions I should ask them to get a sense of their qualifications?

Thanks so much!

Love,

Sara

I would check what their professional associations are. Being direct can't hurt either, because even if they can't help themselves they may be able to point you to someone else that can.

You might try calling Mr. Portney's office and ask for a recommendation for someone closer to you.

In my experience, though im sure there are better ways of doing it, it was basically trial and error. Where I live english is not the first language of most so that narrowed my options but I just chose the first therapist I could get to and set up an appointment. It turned out she knew very little about gender and basically we werent getting anywhere so i asked her to suggest another. She came up with a name, booked an appointment and I tried him. Turned out he was a sexist pig  so that was a no.

Eventually I got refered to my current psych, a gender specialist, and she is perfect. All in all this took several months of rather stressfull work but at the end of the day it worked out so.. I guess the moral of the story is dont do what I did :P

Had my first session with a therapist on Tuesday and let me tell you, it was amazing! It felt so good to be able to talk to somebody who understands what I'm going through. After weeks of nervousness, apprehension and outright fear, I really do think this was the right decision. Thanks everybody for the advice!

Good morning everyone,   It was our first night with our European Boxer and it went well. We got up at 05:30 let him out of the cage and went directly outside to give him a chance to go potty. It has been raining for two days and nights so the grass is soaked and nearly up to his belly. I don’t think he’s ever been outside while it’s raining or wet. I had my rain jacket on and a big brimmed hat as well as rain boots, he just stayed at my feet no matter where we went in the yard. I took him to the previous locations where out daughter’s dog had gone poo, but he just sat at my feet. Once inside and drying him off with a towel. He took a poo right there. So I gathered up his mess, and took him and his poo outside. So right now it’s dog one, trainer zero. Now that the coffee is brewed and I have a cup, he’s chewing on a toy.    Hugs,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Strange that I awoke from a dream dreaming about "being able to pee standing up!"   I know that sounds strange from someone AMAB, but intersex issues have always prevented that.    I wonder what made me dream like that? That was a first! 🤔

Morning y'all.    Nearly winter here, but it's a mild climate compared to what most of you experience. Even so, the best way to describe the mornings lately is...nipply! 😁

What I don’t like about the dealer working on my car, yes the put the paper mats on the floor, but why don’t they remove them when they bring my car to me?  And why do they always mess with my radio settings and my electronic dashboard settings?  I get them the way I want them and they seem to want them at factory default.  Leave things like you find them!  Why is that so difficult?  And don’t tell me it’s because the updated the computer! Every time!.  And no I haven’t figured out everything yet on the new car.  I can’t even get my key programmed to move my seat when I get in and out.  It’s supposed to move the seat, the mirrors, the steering wheel and several other things.  My old Eddie Bauer was easy to program but then it only programmed seat location and pedal location.   ok now that we’ve had our rousing knock on cars and dealer mechanics.  What else shall we talk about?  Bras?  Seems like an appropriate subject for most of us.  I have several different types. Two are famous store push-up padded to are more common everyday lightly padded ant one is a no padding no strap slip and the last one is a front close longline no padding.  Now that one supports the theory that I am now a B cup on my own. I’d prefer a C but then I’m not so sure my blouses would still fit without pulling.  Ah the problem we have as women.  And sizes are never ever the same.  Oh I’m a size ??  But men I need a large shirt and 36-30 pants and they always fit.   we can’t buy anything off the rack with confidence it will fit and I hate having to take it home to try one and return what doesn’t fit.   we’ll time to do my hair and leave.   love ya   Willow
