Shaving Closer

Guest toro

Recommended Posts

I have made a previous thread on 'safe shaving' before I had ever shaved my legs, however I feel that this topic deserves to be in a different thread. If you feel the need, please do merge the threads.

Anyways, during this past month I grew the courage to shave my legs, and it's been working out wonderfully. I do have a question, though and that is how to shave closer. I normally have perfectly smooth shins, but my calves tend to have small black dots in spots where I cannot cut close enough. Does anyone have any tips on how to shave my calves, and also my knees? The worst thing, however is that I never have a complete shave. I normally miss a spot or two while shaving and it looks horrible because my hair length is uneven. I normally do this with the water running, so it's hard to keep track of where I need to shave next. I use soap suds and a 4 blade mens' razor from Gillete. Should I use shaving cream that I use for my face when working on my legs?

Thanks in advanced.

Hi Toro :)

Your razor should be fine. I use a dual blade razor and it works for me. There is no need for shaving cream on your legs. I simply shave at then end of my shower with plenty of lathered soap on my legs. For a closer and more satisfying shave, I would suggest that you moisturize your legs the night before with any lotion that you want (brand does not really matter). The next morning, shower as normal and then shave your legs. I think you will find that the results are better :)

Hope this helps hon.

Oh, one last thing... be patient with shaving. After a few years of shaving, your legs get really acclimated to it and the results are really wonderful!!!

Another thing is the direction in which you shave. If you shave with the growth of the hair, it reduces the chances or razor burn and bumps and ingrown hairs, but doesn't get as close as going against it. Make sure you are using a sharp razor and that you are pressing hard enough (which actually isn't that hard), and that the blade is flat against the skin. You may have to experiment with positioning your legs at different angles to be able to smoothly shave them.

To be honest, for really smooth skin, I myself use hair removal cream instead of a shaver. I have very soft skin anyway and find that there is often the risk of tearing my skin up a bit if I use a razor. I think hair removal creams work better anyway, because they get rid of unwanted hair from the roots rather than just at the level of the skin surface. I don't know if there is a reason why you use a razor instead, but its worth considering removal creams I would say.

I just took a shower and took some time to shave my legs again and it's really getting on my nerves how every time my knees, the back of my calves and somewhere along my thighs are still portions of hair waiting to be shaved. Is there any procedure to follow to not have this? I mean really, it's starting to get me genuinely mad that I see hair after I shave, and also unshaven hair on my knees and behind my calves. What did I do wrong? A few minutes in a hot shower, lather up my legs with soap and shave against the hairline. I check for rough feeling areas and shave there and repeat this process until I feel nothing more. I get out of the shower, and bam. Patches of hair everywhere. The only area I seem to be able to shave perfectly is the shin. Any suggestions?

Perhaps the soap is covering it up while you're in the shower. Also, your skin.. fluctuates.. how do I say this.. swells up isn't really the best way to put it, but something kind of like that. So while you're in the shower you might not feel it (the skin is covering that last bit of hair), but after you get out of the shower the hair comes back (the skin has retreated). Well that's just a theory anyway.

How does it become acclimated? Will the hair stop growing as much?

Thanks for your (and everybody else's) help.

Toro it does start to slow down on growth. It also becomes finer and easier to shave.

Toro.....

One word of advice on razors....

I just bought a 6 pack of disposables and they suk!

They are not sharp at all and they're only good for a couple of times...

When you find a brand that you like ....stick with it...most brands are pretty consistant.. so if you find some good ones, odds are that next time you buy them they will be the same..

Good luck, Hon!

Thanks to you all. I truly appreciate the help.

Any advice on the arm, stomach and peach fuzz that grows on your face aside from the normal shaving areas?

Since I started shaving my legs I have always used my GF's razor and shaving cream. (We eventually had to buy me my own.) :P We like to use the schick silk effects plus. I just recently started to use dove bar soap on all the areas that I intend to shave just before I shave. I think it tends to soften the area and allows a smoother shave. I then lather real good with the shaving cream and shave from the bottom up starting with the back of my leg and work my way around to the front going only about a quarter of the way up each time I complete a section. If I cant get away from the runnning water I just turn the water off, because like you said it gets hard to tell where you have already shaved. Thats the way it works best for me on my legs. Now if someone can tell me how to shave my stomach and chest without bleeding to death, I would gladly accept any advice. Otherwise Im guessing a hair removal cream might be best. Gets kinda pricy for me though.

I regularly shave my legs, arms and belly using a Bic Soleigh woman's razor. I do this in the shower, with the water turned down, so I can rub my hand over the area shaved and assess for rough spots. I get good results on anywhere I shave..I have a couple of spots where I have "spider-veins" which will cut and bleed badly. I use a womans electric razor for those spot. You can use your normal shave cream in addition if you like, but I rarely use it. Using a woman's razor makes the experience a little more special for me, as I always like doing things the feminine way, if possible.

One trick that was already sort of mentioned is to shave with the grain of the hair. After doing that, however, if you go against the grain you can get a nice, close shave and there's less irritation. (Oh, the things I learned from my sister's magazines when I was trying to be a girl.)

However the facts that moisturizing your legs the night before help you get a better shave and that the hair starts to thin out after shaving for a while are news to me. I'll be getting m'lady a bottle of nice, unscented lotion when I go to get her some makeup...and be comforted knowing why my body hair is so thin. (I used to shave EVERYTHING to look like I hadn't gone through puberty yet. Luckily, being hairy anywhere other than my face isn't too terribly important to me. I'll live. Hahaha.)

I purchased a Schick Hydro 5 last week. I was holding recommendation until I used it a couple times. I simply love the closeness this razor gives to your legs, not to mention the notorious knees. I rub in Aloe after shaving and that really seems to help with irritation.

I'm a type "A" personality and one missed hair drives me insane. I've only recently started shaving the whole bod and it seems that every time I get in a different light there's a big hair ruining the whole effect.:banghead:

Type A personality here as well!

Once I get clean with my pink sponge and body wash I fill up a small plastic tub with relatively warm water and then turn the shower off. I use Satin Care shaving gel on my arms, legs, belly and chest. A tiny squirt of it lathered up can work on one leg from knee to foot, and another tiny squirt knee to hip. After every 3 or 4 swipes of my Embrace razor, I dip the razor in the little tub of water and shake it a few times to make sure it's clean. I always go against the grain as well. When I get out and dry off I like to apply a little Aveeno lotion to all areas. These are the best results I have found that work for me, but I haven't tried shaving with the grain and then against it.

After I'm all done with that, I use a battery operated eyebrow trimmer to trim up missed little hairs on my wrists, fingers and elbows. :)

So, after I shave-- everytime I have small black dots visible on the back of my shin area, aka the calves. They're just short hairs that I cannot reach. Since I shave in a hot shower, I don't know how much closer I can get. I've even tried pressing harder, but it doesn't really help. It just stresses me so much seeing that I cannot shave off all of my visible hair. Could anyone please give a desperate person advice on this?

My advice is don't worry even if you get all the hair off it will just grow back with those pri-cklies coming thru so just enjoy the sharp razor and the feeling of cleanliness and relative smoothness it gives

My personal tool for shaving is Veet. It works great on my legs and I've even used it around the crotch (tested a small spot first to be sure nothing important would get scorched). Razor on my chest, face, arms and armpits (a triple blade model that gets super close). That reminds me, I need to buy my wife some more veet....oops lol

My wife is gone for a few days, so yesterday I decided time to shave the legs again. Ran a warm bath and shaved. Once I was done I put on a pair of panties pantyhose and skirt, the feeling was sensational. Wish I could dress like this all the time. Bobbie Anne

im beginning to use female hygiene products alot more lately. i share a bathroom with my sister so its pretty easy. using her shampoo and body wash. using her lotion. using her face cream to clean my face in the shower. i want to get some kind of mosturizer cream to use on my face at night too. shaving my chest and what not. im working on growing out my nails right now.

im starting to try to be more and more like a girl rather than just dressing up every now and then. oh it feels so good!

My advice is - don't shave. Wax, this gets all of the hair out. You get very smooth and no stubble for weeks. When it does grow back it will be much finer hair. The first time is the worst time but after that it is less and less uncomfortable. Shaving is such as waste of time if you have hair like me that creates stubble by evening if I shave in the morning or stubble in the morning if I shave at night. Waxing can last up to six weeks but my hair tends to start to show in about three weeks. But everything is soooo smooooth for those three weeks or so.

I tried Veet for the first time today on my legs. The results were much better than I ever got with a blade. I only wish it didn't have such a strong odor!

I have read numerous accounts of trans folk no longer being welcome among evangelicals.   I am here for help and fellowship not to rebuke anyone.  I can take a pretty high degree of insult, etc., and you haven't insulted me, to my recollection anyway :) and I usually let it go.  But I thought I would let it all out there.   I am sure I disagree with you on numerous issues.  I appreciate other people's viewpoints, including those who radically disagree with me.  Intellectual challenge is good. One thing I appreciate about @MaeBe.

Post 8 “The Ohio Years” We moved to Pittsburgh because of the job with US Airways.  The job involved classroom instruction and simulator training, but no actual flying, so I kept looking for an actual pilot position.  A year after signing on with US Airways I got hired to fly business jets.  The company was located in Cleveland, Ohio, but I was flown commercially from my home in Pittsburgh to where my aircraft was located, making it unnecessary to live near company headquarters.    My flight scheduled consisted of eight days on duty with seven days off.  Having seven days off in a row was great but being gone from home eight days in a row was difficult.  For the first few years the flying was fun, but after a while the eight flying days in a row, were taking their toll on me.  Those days were brutal, consisting of very long hours and a lot of flying time.  Usually, I came home exhausted and need three days just to recover from the work week.  Flying for a living is glamorous until you actually do it.  Quickly, it became just a job.    After five years as a line captain, I became a flight department manager, which required we live near company headquarters.  That meant a move to Cleveland.  Working in the office meant I was home every night but as a manager, the schedule was still challenging.  I would work in the office all week and then be expected to go out and fly the line on weekends.  I referred to it as my “5 on 2 on” schedule, because it felt as though I had no time off at all.   About the same time, we moved to Cleveland, my wife and I became “empty nesters,” with one son in the military and the other away at college.  Sadly, my work schedule didn’t leave much time for Sally.  Add to the fact that while Cleveland is an awesome city, I just never felt comfortable expressing my feminine side.  Most of my outings, and believe me there weren’t enough, occurred while I was on vacation and away from home.   One of the most memorable outings occurred over a long weekend.  I had stumbled across an online notice for a spring formal being held in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, hosted by a local trans group there.  I reached out to Willa to see if she was up for an excellent adventure.  She was, so I picked her up and we drove to Harrisburg together.    The formal was held on Saturday evening and we had the absolute best time.  It turned out that organizers were a group named TransCentralPA.  Everyone was wonderful and I made a lot of new friends that evening.  We learned the spring formal was one of the group’s annual events but for the following year, instead of a spring formal, the group wanted to do a local transgender conference.  That local conference would become the Keystone Conference, and I would attend every year for the next 12.  My move to the west coast was the only reason I stopped attending annually.  I went to the first annual Keystone Conference as an attendee, but in subsequent years I served as a volunteer and as a workshop presenter; more about those in the next installment.   For my Cleveland years, the Keystone Conference would be my major outlet for feminine self-expression.  Yes, I did get out on other occasions, but they were too infrequent.  The managerial job just didn’t allow me the freedom I needed to adequately live my feminine life, and my frustration level was slowly, but steadily on the rise.  It amazed me how adversely not being able to express the feminine half of my personality was affecting my happiness.   However, a major life change was upcoming, and while it would prove to be a significant challenge in many ways, the events would ultimately benefit my female persona.  First, my mom and dad got sick.  They were in and out of the hospital and required personal care.  My wife and I did our best but living in Cleveland, we were too far from them to give them the support they both needed.  Second, I was experiencing serious job burn out.  I decided I need to find another job and I needed to be closer to my parents.    Things changed for the better when I got hired by an aviation training company as a flight simulator instructor.  I would be training business jet pilots.  The training facility was located in New Jersey, which put us much closer to my parents, and the work schedule was much better for quality of life.  Most importantly, this life change would help Sally re-emerge and once again flower.    Hugs,   Sally

I made a living talking about bulk liquids in cargo tanks transportation as a driver and mechanic. Safe loading/unloading, cleaning and inspecting, as well as emergency response scenarios.   Hazmat and fire behavior in the fire service as well as emergency vehicle operations and safe driving. "It was on fire when they called you. It will be on fire when you get there." Arrive ready to work. I could also talk about firefighter behavioral  heath and the grieving process.   The real fun thing is I can do this for people who are not Truck Drivers or Fire Fighters. Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Citizen Tax payers about Public Safety Education.   I love public speaking,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Got a new Granddaughter this morning.  Mother and child (and father) are doing fine. This makes 7 granddaughters and one grandson.  I have 2 sons and 6 daughters myself.  And then I  switched teams.  I think this stuff runs in the family. Another hard day for the patriarchy.

Like @MaeBe pointed out, Trump won't do these things personally.  I doubt that he actually gives a rat's a$$ himself.  But he is the foot in the door for the others.   I don't really see this.  Personally, I am all in favor of "traditional" families.  I raised my own kids this way and it can work fine.  But I think we need to allow for other variations as well.   One thing working against this now is how hard it is for a single breadwinner to support a family.  Many people (I know some) would prefer "traditional" if they could actually afford it.  Like I mentioned, we raised our family with this model, but we were always right at the poverty level.   I was a "conservative evangelical" for most of my life, actually.  So I do understand this.  Admittedly, I no longer consider myself one. I have family members still in this camp.  Some tolerate me, one actually rejects me.  I assure you the rejection is on her side, not mine.  But, I understand she believes what she is doing is right - 'sa pity though. I mean no insult toward anyone on this forum.  You're free to disagree with me.  Many people do.   This is a pretty complex one.  Socialism takes many forms, many of which we accept without even realizing it.  "Classism" does exist, for what it's worth.  Always has, probably always will.  But I don't feel like that is a subject for this forum.   As for the election, it's shaping up to be another one of those "hold your nose" deals.

Well, I suppose it is possible that they don't actually plan on doing what they say.  I'm not too sure I want to take that chance.  But I kinda expect to find out.  Yet, perhaps you're right and it's all just talk.  And anyway, my state GOP is giving me enough to worry about anyway. I remember a time when being "woke" just meant you were paying attention.  Now it means you are the antichrist. I just don't want the government "protecting" me from my personal "delusions."
