Very Strange

I still can't get my mind around this.

Dressed in my default writer's slob mode, which does not in any way shout "female", I had to go make a payment at the courthouse. My hair was pulled back in a ponytail, and I'm never going to be "ma'amed" when I look like that.

I gave my debit card to the cashier, who took a look at it and asked, "Is she with you?" Caught by surprise, I replied, "Is who with me?" She held up the card and said, "She needs to be here."

Being attuned to matters of gender, I realized what had happened. But what's strange about it is that the picture on the card is several years old...and it's decidedly male. And so is the name. My hair was a bit fuller on the sides then, and I had glasses on. That's it.

So I wasn't misgendered, but my card was. Oh, the irony.

When she realized her mistake, she turned beet red. I've never actually seen anyone so visibly embarrassed.

It is certainly strange the way he or she somehow pops up when we don't expect it. That sounds like a wonderful example and an amusing experience as well. Hopefully the pink will leave her face.

Hugs,

Charlize

I actually feel bad for the young person that she should feel so embarrassed. Its only us old fogy's that are supposed to do that sort of thing.

I immediately felt bad for her, too.

It was all handled with good humor to diffuse the situation. I told her I was headed to Subway from there and I sometimes get carded for the senior discount at age 73 (all true)...and because that's a very good thing, the two cancel each other out.

Thanks for the grin Kenna. As Drea said once we get past all the sensitivity and seriousness there are some opportunities for humor in our situations-and I do sometimes feel sorry for those who get caught between.

Yesterday we ran into a checker who used to babysit my granddaughter and worked with my daughter last year. She is very religious and anti- LGBT. I knew her in the past and she knew I had transitioned but didn't know who I was yesterday. She visited with my daughter and granddaughter but kept glancing covertly and curiously at me. When we finally paid I noticed she actually quickly held up my credit card and read it. Same smile-slightly more forced but no comment. I actually felt a little sorry for her. Pretty sure she was trying to see who my daughter was with and got a nasty surprise instead. I'm onrey enough to have enjoyed it.
