Met With a Reform Rabbi Today

After the recent decision by the Union for Reform Judaism to encourage Reform Rabbis to welcome trans folk, and how to make them feel welcome, I decided to reach out to the Rabbis in Reform synagogues near where I live. I asked three to meet with me to discuss what I might be able to do to help them become allies and educate themselves and their congregations on TG issues.

I met with the first of the three today, and it went extremely well. Rabbi Didi has a small congregation of perhaps 100 families. She knew some things, but there was much she didn't know. I told her of my own journey, what I knew of our community from my interactions here and IRL, and what I was hoping to accomplish; namely, educating her, other Rabbis and secular staff, and their congregations (if willing).

She was very enthusiastic about my giving a talk, but has to run it by her board. She will also discuss it with the local Interfaith Council on which she is a member. I hope this will be the start of some good things. Ironic how I've come to talk with a Rabbi after distancing myself from the faith for most of my life. I've not suddenly become religious, but a synagogue still feels like a familiar and welcoming place. :)

Perhaps it was for this point in time that you were absent from the synagogue as you were. You were gaining experience and wisdom to become a teacher to them, even as a lay person.

That is wonderful Carolyn Marie. You are indeed a rabbi yourself as you reach out tom teach others.

Hugs,

Charlize

This is wonderful, Carolyn Marie. I pray that you will make in-roads to a more enlightened and welcoming congregation.

Thanks, Gennee. My talk is scheduled for January 27. I need to get the word out locally.
