This is one of the very best opinion pieces on the subject of religion and transgender people.  The fact that the Rabbi touches on both the Old and New Testament is particularly noteworthy, and that its just well written.

At the time the major canon's (Roman & Greek) for the Bible were were finally agreed on in the late 4th century there were Gospels attributed to women that were in the running for inclusion in the canon, but which were rejected by the male theologians of the day.  Of course, back at the time of the Reformation 500 years ago, even some of the books in the Roman and Greek canons were tossed on the trash heap of the Protestant churches reading list.  The Judaic scriptures were actually used by the early xtian movement to give legitimacy to their upstart new religion, and even the current Judaic canon did not get its current form until after the fall of Jerusalem to the Romans.  (Canon = standard agreed content.)

 

The author of this piece does apply a particular "Rabbinical" analysis to this situation even though he does recite New Testament scriptures.  I love the approach that makes the old "speak" to today and not command our lives to be lived in ancient days.
