Growing my hair

Recommended Posts

I am finally trying to grow my hair out to make it much longer and more feminine. Probably at least shoulder l think.

I have always wanted to but never felt ready or willing to. Currently is the longest it has ever been (see my profile pic).

As such I wanted to ask if people had any advice?

Currently I am:

Pretreating it

Using natural anti-damage shampoo and conditioner

Getting it trimmed a quarter of an inch every three months

Straightening balm whenever I straighten

My hairdresser still reads me as male but I do not really want to try a new one as I spent a lot of time with other hair dressers that would ignore whatever I I asked for and just cut all my hair down to a short back and sides.

Any advice people have on growing your hair out?

I have long naturally curly hair , and some Tips I’ve been told: not to shampoo everyday, and use conditioner every time  when I did wash my hair. Shampoo takes away the oils you need, and conditioner keeps your hair moisturized. Also leave in some conditioner help your hair stay moisturized. I have mine trimmed about every three month too. Try not to over treat. Keep it simple.

Thanks for those tips, they are helpful.

I don’t go anywhere special, I go to Supercuts. The people at the one I go to are local, and in Hillcrest. You don’t last long, no matter what business, cause word travels fast, and fiercely. ? So I like them, but my real point is, if you don’t mind going to Supercuts, Try their Tea Tree oil shampoo and head massage. It doesn’t cost that much, and the tea tree oil shampoo will feel good, and make your hair feel really good, But the head massage they give, Makes it worth even more! =p. Plus I always ask them hair questions while I’m there and they help a lot!

I’ve been growing mine out for like a year and a half. It takes forever. I have still not had a trim or anything (although that time has come). The advice I got was to not do much of anything with it. The less product you can use the better. No coloring. Minimal heat. I have no split ends still all this time into it. And I don’t do anything but tie it up in a hair tie. On occasion I do straighten it. And I use a little mousse or hair spray some days. But less is best.

The washing stuff is true too. I wash on Tuesday’s and Saturday’s. I use an oil treatment on Sunday. And I condition 4x a week. So far so good.

My hair is really super dry and naturally curly.  I wash and conditioner my hair 3 times a week and I put in a hair mask to help my hair out since it is so dry that it looks damaged.  I agree with dont shampoo and conditioner every day but 2 to 3 times a week is good to keep the natural oils.  I take Biotin and vitamin  E supplements as well.  I was told that the thicker and curly the hair, the slower it grows.  The thinner and straighter the hair, the faster it grows.  If that helps out.  But typically hair grows about one inch to 1/4 inch a month with how slow it grows.

I disagree with that. My hair, post HRT is super fine and the only Straight thing about me as my stylist and I agree, and the only way you can tell it is growing by now is the roots showing at 5 weeks after my color touch up.  In my case its a matter of "I would rather dye than go grey!"  My stylist's instruction to me is to shampoo no more than twice a week, and to use conditioner only on the hair ends away from the scalp, since the scalp area has the body oil from the scalp on it within an hour after you wash the scalp area. Newer colorants do not do the damage they once did and my hair feels better with it now.  I use a leave-in spray conditioner that my stylist put me onto (PM me if you want the brand) that works well in our Santa Ana Wind conditions here.  This was a few months ago---large.100_1394e.jpg

Okay that's good to know. I regularly dye my hair as I feel much more confident and feminine when it is vibrant.

I agree that your hair will only grow as long and fast as it genetically will.  We're all different.  I get a half inch trimmed off every five weeks.  My hair used to be thick and full but as I've gotten older it the hair shafts have gotten much thinner.  Whether genetics, diet or just older age...  it is what it is.  I don't wash frequently any longer.  Running on T I needed to wash my hair daily but no longer as my scalp is not oily.  I use products to keep it moisturized but I do fight the dryness and fly a way hair look.
