Deadname debt collection calls

Has the creditor been notified of the name change?    If no, do it possibly through a credit rating company.

Was the debt incurred under your "dead name"?

I am a retired tax collector for a state where we did honor the changed names if we were notified of it and both of those questions are important to answer.

If you owe the debt the best way really is going to be setting up a payment arrangement with them that you can keep.  If you are going to have troubles doing that I suggest going to an LGBTQ  Center where they can get you some legal help.  In my state we do have an agency that regulates debt collection agencies and they can help as well.

If you do not owe the debt then my LGBTQ center is even better since they can refer you to sliding scale legal representation.,

"He died."
Is my answer to all callers for my "dead" name. Depending on who it is that is calling, I may tell them of my transition and new name/gender.

I would let your creditors know your new name.  When i went to court for a legal name change i had to swear it isn't for illegal purposes.  My debts as well as assets came with me regardless of name and gender change.

When telemarketers call i simply say no one by that name here.

Hugs,

Charlize

Your debt belongs to you regardless of your name and gender.  With debt, things only get worse the longer you hide from it.  Interest and fees will continue to add to the balance.

In theory, it's worse to deal with debt collectors, than the original lender.  If possible, you should try to deal with the lender to come up with a payment plan.

You could follow the president's example, and declare bankruptcy...

It's debt that I incurred under my deadname and they aren't aware of the change

Please take the suggestions I gave you above.  I did tax collecting for 33 years and people who were cooperative were respected in return and both sides came out ahead.  .

What Jani said. Part of my name change was promising that I wasn't doing it for criminal purposes or to avoid debt. I told the people I owed money to first. They were very good about adopting my new name. They still want their money of course, but they're civilized about it.
