County Fair

Our county fair is going on this week.

I went yesterday and saw all the farm animals, looked at the shops, antiques, displays, and exibitions.

Watched the carnival rides for a while, had an adult beverage with my meal and then went home.

It was fun. :D

Just was wondering if anyone else went to their county fair and how it was?

Well, Jean, depends on which county fair I hit.

Now I go across the "Cheddar Curtain" aka the WI-IL border and hit the county just south of me in IL. That fair is next weekend, but I can't make it. I'll be at a wild west event across the state. I'm looking forward to my county fair which is the weekend of Labor Day. I've actually never gone, but I'm hoping to this year. Sounds like a lot of fun.

I used to be involved in 4-H when I was a kid so I was always at the county fair every year. I miss it. There's just something about a good old-fashioned county fair.

Folks elsewhere might not believe this, but Los Angeles County has a fair, and its got farm animals, rides,

fried everything, horse races, pig races, and every other sort of county fair fun. And not a movie star

or a paparazzo in sight. I love it!

I just found out something here in Michigan. The 'premiums' paid out to the various ribbon winners used to be supplied by the state government - for every authorized county fair - including some not-quite-county fairs. Considering the economic situation here (which most in the U.S. are probably aware of), the state government has cancelled all payments, so the local/county fairs now have to come up with their own prize money. I - and a lot of others - always thought our daily admissions covered that, but that is not the case. There has been some talk of a number of fairs being cancelled in the future because of this. And the State Fair - which I heard is the oldest in the country - itself is on very shaky ground.

That's a real shame as I have always enjoyed these. A civic group I belong always has a presence and our 'booth' has always been quite popular so it would be sad to see it go.

Oh My, I'm looking forward to hearing all about your times at the fair. :D

And I'm quite suprised that a big city like Los Angeles would have farm animals. :o

I do hope that all of you have a really great time when you go.

In Australia we call them "shows"

Some country towns will have their annual show and the state has a "Royal show"

I prefer the smaller country town shows as they are nowhere near as touristy or crowded.

I don't think I've ever been to a county fair, I've gone to one of the two State Fairs here a few times though.

I know of county fairs all around Texas but Dallas and Tarrant Counties don't seem to - probably because the Offical State Fair of Texas is held in Dallas and the Fat Stock Show and Rodeo are held in Fort Worth (Tarrant County), I'm not sure about Houston as they have a huge fat Stock Show and Rodeo as well.

I quoted CM on this one because the invention of the corn dog is disputed but the two earliest claims are from state fairs in Texas between 1938 and 1942 Carl & Neil Fletcher introduced the Corny Dog and in 1941 Pronto Pup introduced Corn Dogs to Minnesota. In 1946 the stick was added in two locations and the reat is snak food history!

Love ya,

Sally

PS If you ever saw the movie "State Fair" with Pat Boone, Ann-Margret and Bobby Darin (1962) while the original musical was set at the Iowa State fair, this one was filmed at the Texas State Fair in Dallas and the Oklahoma State Fair in Oklahoma City.

Uh oh. But...

You missed me when I made a run across the border for Sonics with the dog last night.

County fairs are fun. An experience all their very own.

The fair in my county here in Ohio is so much fun...

It's only a mile away from my house through the hollow...

And on the nights that they have the tractor pulls and the motocross and Demo Derby...It gets REALLY loud at my house!

We can hear everything the announcer is saying...every lost kid and event about to start!

You walk the midway and see people that you haven't seen all year (which is gonna be a real treat for me, cause I've changed a LOT!...LOL)

And eat all of the nasty food that you only get once a year...like those long greasy fries in a cup covered in vinegar and salt and you hold them above your head and eat like swallowing a worm!

YUMMY!

I do wood working and have entered 16 years in a row....

I didn't make anything this year...didn't wanna break a nail!

We go and pet the draft horses HUGE Clydesdales whose rump is higher than your head, but as gentle as a baby.....and we go pet the goats, they're so cute!

And then over to the Llama barn to pet them, too...when we get home...Riley, our dog, goes ape with us having all of those strange smells on us!....lol

My wife Darcy enters canned goods and wins red and blue ribbons, which is so cool because later we get to EAT IT!

Be sure to enjoy YOUR fair!

We sure do!

Hey Donna Jean,

I just finished working a county fair, here in Ohio. We own a concession biz and the stuff one doesn't see. :D

When I wasn't busy I amused myself by counting big booties and beer guts. It was a nedneck fair and they love to eat and drink beer. Then, there were some straight boys walking or I should say, trying to walk around in girl's hiphugger jeans; Lord have mercy... Then, there were 3 gay boys 'pimpin da strogh"; not a bright thing to do at a redneck fair. They musta escaped from Columbus and got lost.

WE have a fair that starts this coming Sunday and runs for 7 days. They work my butt off at this one from 9am til closin time. We have the Beach Boys on Tuesday night;yeah. Us old farts get to groove two nights; Sunday and Tuesday.

Well I have been absent recently due to my new hobby of computer gaming. I have worked on a collection of NES, SNES, N64, Sega and now revamping up my PlayStation 1 and 2 collection and then will get Xbox original. My computer isn't powerful enough to run Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games. It's fun to see the old games that I grew up with.

It's truly bizarre, the changes that have happened over the years. Larger houses on smaller blocks of land which means less trees because there's no room for them, so less shading and the resultant need to run air-con harder, which adds to suburban heat sink, which results in higher local ambient temperatures, which results in increased air-con use. Vicious circle.

I don't have "air" here, so I pretty much live with what Mother Nature gives me.  Fortunately, there are trees in my yard which helps in the NC summer.  Windows and doors open all summer - closed up in winter. I do have fans, ceiling and windows. When you think about it, everyone used to live this way.

I cannot say that I have. As much as we hope that love, compassion, and therapy help, sometimes opening ourselves up to individuals who later to out to disingenuous, results in worsening of the original trauma. In addition, it may provide a secondary trauma. I have experienced this first hand, and it has left me hardened more than diamond or titanium. There is an emptiness that grabs you when you have been betrayed for innocently opening ourselves up, only to find someone who has went behind your back, and tried to destroy your life.    As for therapy, well, for some of us it works I suppose, until we either run out of money. Insurance is often not useful. There are many "counselors" who will not accept the insurance payments, but will willingly charge much more. When my counselor unilaterally decided to increase charges from 130/session to 180/session, I said enough is enough. I survive, sometimes despite myself. I have paid a fortune out of pocket for everything, and have no illusions about it. If I did not pay what I paid, I would not have received the services including the counseling. Transactional? Yes. I already knew I was transgender. That little gift will exist until my last heartbeat occurs. I will endure because I want to, and because my job/profession benefit others.    It was hard enough coming out later in life. I knew it would be hard. If I had a choice, would I choose to be transgender? No. If I had it to do over again, I would never tell a soul. I would take everything to the grave with me.

Good question, when it comes to love, the trauma from past makes it hard for me to know wither someone really loves me or not. My therapist suggested that I embrace my femininity more, due to my past trauma held me back from doing so and forgive those who mistreated me.

Hi MaeBe, good question about the T fighting back.. things to keep in mind for some of us who are on the E, levels may respond differently which requires a treating doctor to monitor both the T and E levels, there might be other test work to be done as well. I don't know what my T levels are, except I have a hormone imbalance. Oh yeah, I use the oral type of E not the shots, my treating doctor plans for me to use the patch form of E later on.

Good morning everyone,    Just when I think the crate and potty training is going well. Parker has decided that the laundry room is a good place to do his business. He rings the sleigh bells at the back door to go outside to potty, has not made the connection to needing to do his business. He is only 10 weeks old and still very much a young puppy.    On another note the rest of my world is going well, and off schedule. The only way I know what day of the week it is by looking at my phone. @Willowand @awkward-yet-sweet my wife and I keep our house on the cool side holding the thermostat on 69° F year round. We also have ceiling fans moving the air in each room. She even sleeps with an additional isolating fan in her bedroom. I think that one is more about white noise than cooling. I’m glad central Indiana is in a moderate temperature zone allowing us to experience distinctly different seasons.    Hug,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Well I've been surviving at least that is something. Heading to visit the oldest and family tonight. Haven't seen them since before xmas. I just wish they would come visit us. None of them have seen the inside of the new house. We are going on 2 yrs. I know it is an embarrassment for my son to come visit his parents. Until they moved back to WY our 4 yr old granddaughter has never stepped foot into WY.   Since the wife left early for work. The puppy thinks he needs up early too, so up about half hour earlier than normal. Which maybe good as I (and maybe our youngest) am heading to a cars and coffee in Cheyenne this am. Even taking the wagon, which I was able to get the transmission fluid changed yesterday. god what a PITA that was.   Well off to see the wizard shortly. TOTO, where did I leave my gingham dress?   Hugs, Kymmie

Good morning    @awkward-yet-sweet you’d be plenty warm at my den. Wife keeps the temp between 76 and 78.  If I turn on a ceiling fan I get “do you need that fan on?”  I sleep best in a cool room snuggled up.   have a great day. Hot here!  Oh I went all the way in the pool yesterday it was nice.   Willow
