The only way to lose fat around your middle is diet and cardio workouts---specific exercises to target trouble spots will not work here---take long walks and graduate to running if you can, or get some good cardio CDs and do it at home OR join a good gym. I have posted this link in another thread---a great exercise link, no sign up required and no fee--mini videos of the exercises: GOOD LUCK!!!

Try Pilates. This concentrates on the core muscles beneath your abdominals. It tones and firms muscle without building bulk. Sit-ups and crunches are also good, especially if you also throw in some twists to focus on the side muscles which will help narrow your waist.

The only way to burn fat though is through aerobic exercise. Dancing is great for that, so is aerobics. Look at it this way, you want to get fit like a woman, the best exercise is doing what women do to keep fit. I'm a real gym bunny and love my aerobics, apart from getting envious of the gorgeous outfits some of the other girls wear. Alternatively, walking is great, if you do it at a high pace. That might tone your bum, but you will lose pounds

You can't specifically lose weight from any area, your body doesn't work like that, when you body needs more energy than you're eating either through dieting or exercise or both, then it will burn some of your stored fat, where it takes it from first, and where it is deposited are down to a combination of hormones and genetics.

If you tone your abdominal muscles, your stomach will appear flatter and the more tight, - i.e. less flabby, you won't loose much weight doing this because it's not very high impact exercise. If you want to loose some weight, then aerobics, or just walking, walking is good because it will tone your leg muscles a bit but won't really cause you to build much muscle. if you're full of testosterone then you're probably going to loose weight from your thighs and arms first, from your chest, and maybe some from your butt, tho gentic guys don't tend to pack too much on back there to begin with anyway, unless you're getting pretty big. and you will also easily build muscle (some muscle is good since it raises your base calorie burn rate) if you're full of estrogen, then you're more likely to loose it from your stomach first, and then i think it would be hips and your bum, but i'm not 100% sure on that. it's different for everybody anyway, it's much harder to build any muscle without T however.

If you aren't on HRT yet, then even if you end up looking a little more "ripped" than you'd like, the fat redistribution from the E when you start ought to smooth it out a little. And it will go back on your butt and help fill you out.

You will tune muscle ding any excerise- you will only build it through resistance training.

Your diet will depend what muscles you will see or won't see.

Anyone with a flat stomache has toned their muscles up so much they hold everything in.

This is more of a diet concern b/c you can already have a fairly flat stomach and it not appear so b/c of the kinds of foods you take in.

Please note starving yourself in any way dose not help one lose wieght- contrary you'll hold onto it longer.

You should talk to your doctor about modifying your diet and any core exercise done in more repetitions will tone.

If you build large muscle easily you might want to do even more reps (less reps= more size)

crunches also don't have to be done on the floor- ignore people who say you can get a flat stomach without cruches- they're still doing them just not flat on their backs. Any movement where you bend at the waist is typically a crunch of one form or another!

Hope this helps!

Any diet exercise plan worth doing will take a couple months or more before you see those "dramatic" results!

I would also like to add that to keep the *budunkadunk* you may wish to employ booty exercises. Basically anything that would make you hate stairs.

I recommend Yoga. There are a lot of poses in Yoga that will trim various parts of the body, so can be adapted to concentrate on certain areas. Yoga will improve balance and strength, without developing bulging muscles. Done right, privately, perhaps in the peace and quiet of the night, can be very relaxing and calming. I had all those benefits some 30 + years ago when I did Yoga for 30-45 minutes a day, 5 or 6 days a week. I got lazy, and I got busy, and I stopped Yoga. The second biggest mistake in my life (being born male the first). I have recently started walking, and have taken Yoga back up as well. I already feel better, and I think I am looking better too. Improving the diet is also extremely important.

I just was thinking about my past. When I was taking care of myself, I was also in a place where Susan could flourish. When she was not flourishing, I stopped taking care of myself because, while not suicidal, I was certainly a bit self destructive and didn't care about it as much.

Sorry about the hijack-in-progress here. Look into Yoga.

Same here.  My mind is a jumbled mess.  I'm no great philosopher, nor particularly educated.  Don't open my brain's closet, as all the junk might come tumbling out.

Its been a long day.  I had a good trip with my husband, kind of sorry I had to come home.  I mean, I love my partners, but I feel overwhelmed by the chaos at times.  It was nice being able to just drive and talk for two days, and not feel rushed at meals.  Stopped at a buffet off I-40 in Oklahoma, and I was able to nibble comfortably for two hours!  And taking a shower in a place where I don't have to bother hanging up the towels for later   Its all about the little things....

Hi @AmandaJoy Welcome, and nice to meet you! Congratulations on your Self-Affirmation!  As you've already discovered you're in great company here on this Forum.  It took me 60+ years also.   I understand your thrill and desire to proceed full-steam-ahead but that you've already realized to meter your Journey.  So, I will just end with what I tell most new Members when they arrive ... Deep breaths ... One step at a time

Hey @KayC I need another tutorial session on this place with you.  Maybe we can talk on Discord or the phone and I can share my screen and do a few messages while Asking you some questions about how this place is organized. How are you doing in the real world?? ... "real world" ???  What is this "real world" of which you speak?
    • Michelle_S
@VickySGV Ha!  Finally figured THAT out!  Though I hate to confess just how long it took me to figure out WHERE to begin typing that "@" sign.  (So I just won't confess it!  ... giggles) I am not sure how private this message to you is ... for example I was going to make a guess about your location (you say near a major earthquake fault) and while there are many places in CA which fit that description, I live near one as well. But I am not sure if being asked that in a public forum is something you want, and I don't know if I am talking publicly or privately right now.  (So, obviously, till I learn what is what, I treat EVERYTHING as public). I think Kay might have already told me about the "@" sign but I forgot ... Guess I have blonde roots ... (I'm actually a Brunette ... Grey but the box keeps me a brunette ... still the number of mistakes I make and how slow I am with learning things constantly reminds me that I must be blonde on the inside!!  ... giggles)

@KymmieL do they have you on anti depressants?  Are they certain they are the right ones for you?  Has a psychiatrist been involved?  My physician first put me on an anti depressant and when things got worse for me he added one that was the initial cause of my cancer.  My therapist recommended I had a different need changed things. My psychiatrist agreed with the particular underlying condition and the choice of medications.   everyone is different but if one medication isn’t working there are many different types and different underlying conditions that require different treatments.  No meds mentioned because what didn’t work and what did all depends on your case, not mine.   Willow

To me loving myself means having the courage to live the way I want and to be me.     I hardly ever really like how I look but I feel good knowing I am trying to be the best version of myself that I can be. It is definitely a struggle sometimes though.  💗Cynthia

I had a five hour road trip today.  I’m trying to grow my hair out so I just pushed it back with a pink hair band, lipstick and gloss, no makeup.    White spaghetti strap top, short black skirt, white sandals with pink toenails!  A couple of rings and bracelets, necklace and hoop earrings.   I felt like a hot mess but it’s my favorite way to travel!

Glad you had a good day, @Willow Mine on the other hand sucked. I have been screwing up again, I even got written up. I may have to educate them on major depression and disability. not that it will work.    OH, well. May be another job I lost because of me. Yes, my depression is about down at the magma level   Kym

This bag is really working out for me.  I had worn out the back on my yin-yang bag so I picked this one up.  It wasn't long before I cut off the flap on it and braided a hemp strap for it.  The zipper is the best feature.  I can spin the bag around and I'm not afraid of losing anything.  I've taught myself to keep all the essential things in it and nothing more.  Here is what made the cut:   Notepad Sharpie Ballpoint Pen Teaspoon Glasses Phone (most of the time) Wired Headphones and/or Bluetooth Carmex and/or Lipstick Flash Drive Current Braiding Project Wallet Hair Clip   And on my keys I have my one inch Swiss Army Knife with scissors and a bottle opener that I like using with mason jar lids.   I don't miss pockets at all now.  The bag is fun and practical.  I can set it on the ground to get everything off my body.  If I need something, I'm looking for a fairly large object.  I always have something to work on with the braiding project.
