Transgenderism In Games

A transgender... Pokémon?

It's more likely than you think.

Quoting Bulbapedia here:

Azurill is currently the only Pokémon which does not evolve based on gender whose gender ratio does not match that of its evolved forms, being female 75% of the time while Marill and Azumarill are female only 50% of the time. Due to this, one of every three female Azurill evolve into a male Marill (whether or not this will happen is determined by the hidden personality value). It is unknown if this is an error in programming or if it was intentional to reference real-world animals that change sex under specific conditions.

Bethesda Softworks was accused of bashing transwomen in Fallout: New Vegas. One of the sidequests wants you to stop a crazed super mutant who wears a blonde wig and pink heart-shaped glasses. Before the game was released Official Xbox Magazine claimed that Tabitha (the super mutant in question) was just a male pretending to be a female due to insanity. You can see why some weren't happy about this (it was resolved when Bethesda confirmed that Tabitha was female before she progressed into a super mutant).

In Dragon Age: Origins you can find a transwoman working in a brothel. 'Nuff said.

This was my understanding from the beginning. It was discussed with Fallout 3 that those Super Mutants were likely mostly female as well. I think some even speculated that Fawkes was female. While playing New Vegas and doing that quest I never once got the impression that Tabitha was mtf or anything other than a female super mutant.

I played a online game once where you can have a spell done to you to change your sex from male to female or v female to male.

If only it was that simple. lol

In the PS2 game Persona 4 Naoto Shirogane is a crossdresser. I really don't want to say FTM because she only wants to change sexes due to her career path being a detective. Naoto believes that since the whole detective field is male-dominated she would never fit in as a female.

Picture of Naoto

I absolutely loved Persona 4, and not only because it is a fantastic game. It is also, in my opinion, the only game that looks at the issues of transsexuality and homosexuality in a constructive, meaningful way. Most games that attempt this end up using shallow token characters, or even worse, flat-out parodies, but Persona 4 doesn't insult the player's intelligence, and offers relatable characters that you actually care about. If you want to hear more about this topic in the game, watch this video, they explain it much better than I can: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/extra-credits/2520-Sexual-Diversity

Personally, Naoto was an inspiration to my idea of personal identity and sexuality; among other things, her role in the game is what motivated me to talk to someone about my own feelings of possible transgenderism. (That's why I chose her as my forum avatar!) :) If you are interested to see what the topic of sexuality can bring to a game's narrative, if presented in a meaningful way, then definitely play this game.

You can crossdress in fable 1 & 2 and Saint's Row 2, and the upcoming game Fallout: New Vegas has a hostile faction leader who is an MtF, although I find her a little offensive, being a 9 foot tall orange mutant with huge muscles wearing a blonde wig and pink heart-shaped sunglasses calling herself Tabitha

She's not a MtF,it's just that all Supermutants lose their sex characteristics when they turn into one, so they all look like massive bodybuilders, so the ones of female gender look like crossdressing bodybuilders but they aren't trans; there is also a female Supermutant that can be your companion (Lily is her name).

Also in Fable 1, Lost Chapters version there is a mission with a Bordello...one way to finish it is to crossdress as a redhead and sleep with the aptly named owner (Mr.Grope...LOL)...he will reveal meaningful information after he falls asleep...

I believe someone mentioned before they wanted to see Poison in a fighting game.

Well, your wish has been granted by Capcom, Poison will be making her fighting game debut in Street Fighter X Tekken, obviously on the Street Fighter side of the game. Here you go:

And the gameplay trailer from San Diego Comic Con:

I don't know if anyone else knows this but Vivian from Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door is MtF in the Japanese version and Italian version of the game. There is also Flea from Chrono Trigger who is a crossdresser. I can't really think of any others that haven't been already mentioned.

I remember a game I played when I was young that had a big transgender theme but you didn't find out about it until a far way into the game.

It was called Faria, it was for the NES. It had a FTM as the main character, sort of. The player starts as a warrior-girl with seemingly no background given. After some plot line (rescue the princess, get poisoning antidote, fix bridge to next town, usual old rpg fare plot conventions), you find out about a prophecy. A man from a village full of men is said to slay the evil wizard who happens to be the main villain of the game. You go and confront the wizard - and find out in the process that your main character was the man from the prophecy and, to try and counteract it, the wizard cast a spell to turn you into a woman. After slaying the wizard, the curse is broken and you change back into a man, and finish the rest of the game that way.

Thanks you so much, it seems no one remebers this game, but whenever I'm in a disscussion about trans game characters I always bring it up. It is a harder one to find, took me years to obtain a copy and even then it was pure luck a copy wandered into a local store, and even then it was rather expensive.

Dead rising is infamous for it's wardrobe. GemstoneIV a MUD where you wear what you want period, the players are hardcore, you have to be on a game that's now 24 years running. Scarface has several MTF's in the islands, this optional homophobic mission almost got scarface an AO rating rather than just mature.

I don't know who has played the new Diablo 3, but the lord of terror has some very feminine features. Even our kids commented on it.

Spoilers, but, Erica from Catherine is an mtf. There's a subtle hint in the game and if you get the true Katherine ending, one of the other characters says she was known as Eric in school.

I do believe Poison from Final Fight and Street Fighter is trans. Pretty sure that was unintentional, though, and only came about because certain audiences were objected to hitting women in a fighting game and Capcom declared her to be a "newhalf" instead.

Also Birdo.

Poison is transgender... What? That's awesome!

I have heard and seen stories about Birdo from the classic Mario games. Some say that Birdo is a female character (because of the bow on his/her head) but also in the older Mario games Birdo was classified as both male and female (male in some games and female in others). Nintendo hasn't really disclosed what sex Birdo is, though. At least this is from what I remember. lol

      Good morning    wow, this is what 6 AM looks like not looking out the windows at work. Interesting week of start times 7,8,7,7,4.  ASM is off most of the week.     No coffee this morning, at least not until I get to work.  I’m going to see if no coffee makes a difference in how I feel today, I’ve head a headache for several days now, nothing has helped.  I do realize that stopping coffee cold turkey can bring on caffeine withdrawal headaches so I expect today to be no better.  But I’m hoping for tomorrow.  Today is just to see what if any affect it has on my throat.    time to fix my hair and walk the dog before I motor across the road.  Cherri o .   keep a stiff upper lip and all that stuff.  (Sorry, nothing the least bit funny coming to mind this morning, you’ll have to entertain yourself today}

DON’T ADD JUDGEMENT TO YOUR FEELINGS by Olga Lacroix | Anxiety relief, Happiness, Mindfulness I’m sitting here drinking my favorite coffee, and as I enjoy this moment I cannot wait to share with you the thoughts that are in my head.  Recently, I have talked about how circumstances don’t determine your future. And somewhere along the line, I wanted to explore a little bit more about our thought process. How we discourage ourselves so often from our goals and from the things that we want, because we have beliefs that go against what we want. In this episode, I want to talk about how it’s important for us to learn not to judge our feelings. Aside from being a Life Coach, I’m also a Certified Mindfulness Instructor. And non-judgement is one of the learnings that I enjoy understanding, applying, and teaching. WHY BEING JUDGEMENTAL IS HARMFUL Sometimes it’s so difficult to be non-judgmental, especially if it’s coming from a bad experience or emotions. For example, a client of mine just had a pregnancy loss and a part of her coping mechanism is to hate or be indifferent to people who have babies.  It’s her way of processing the grief and protecting herself from anger and sadness. And recently someone close to her had a baby. She wanted to feel excited for that person but somehow her bad experience was holding her back. Like her, a lot of people cope this way. Some people try to hide their feelings and emotions just because they’ve already judged them as maybe improper or inappropriate emotions. And what happens is, those emotions stay inside them longer, they don’t get to process their emotions, and it becomes more painful. HOW NOT TO BE JUDGEMENTAL When we judge our feelings as bad, our natural response is to avoid it. We go through crazy lengths just to avoid the feeling, but by avoiding it we’re actually growing it. So what do we do? Do not judge the emotion, allow yourself to feel the negative emotions. Don’t mask it, instead embrace it.  DON’T IDENTIFY WITH YOUR EMOTIONS For someone like me who experienced Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD, a common side effect is anxiety. I have learned that the more I try to repel the anxious thoughts, the stronger they feel in my body, and the longer they stay. But when I’m courageous enough, and I say to the feeling, I’m not gonna judge you for existing, you’re just a feeling. I tell myself something neutral. There is anxiety, not I am anxious. Separate yourself from the feeling. The feeling is not you and it’s just temporary. FINDING THE BALANCE Now when the feeling is good and positive, we jump into attachment, wanting that feeling to linger longer and even forever. But according to Buddha, that’s when the suffering begins, when you want to make something last forever, and when you’re not ready to understand and accept the impermanence of emotions. Find the balance in your emotions. Learn to separate yourself from the emotion. Feel the emotions whether they’re good or bad, but don’t dwell in it. It’s an emotion that we need to feel, process, and eventually let go. Through this, we will achieve a healthier mind. STEPS TO FREE YOURSELF FROM JUDGEMENT The first step is awareness. Being aware of the emotion and how you have judged it. This step will allow you to think of the next step to free yourself from judgement. Step two is processing your emotion in neutrality. Go to a quiet place, close your eyes, and meditate. Bring all of your senses, all of your awareness to the feeling. Give it attention and wait for it to dissipate.  The last step is to pay attention to the lesson. Become curious and think about what this emotion is teaching you, what wisdom can you take from it. Be an observer of your emotions. You need to react, you need to fix them, change them, modify them, you just need to notice them. And then you need to open the space, let them be felt. These are moments of growth, these are moments of transformation. And most importantly, these are moments where we allow the emotion to be processed. Reset Your Mindset is opening in January of 2022. A program that helps you with making decisions, set clear boundaries without drama or guilt. Stop the hamster wheel that keeps you in overthinking mode, switching off the mean inner voice and switching on confidence and compassion instead. Reset your mindset and discover your true self. Click here to know more! Bonus: I’m also giving participants lifetime access to Detox The Mind online course. Welcome to the forums, Felix!! It sounds like you keep yourself very busy and have some wonderful musical talent. My wife enjoys playing the ukulele, too.   There are lots of veterans here - not sure if any were Marines, though.   The forum is filled with lots of information, links and amazing people. I just want to mention, where I live there are tons of cis guys your height or shorter. Among them is my dad and one of my professors (who are well over 17 y/o lol), and I honestly don't think twice about it. Every time I go to the grocery store I see at least 4 different guys around that height too. I don't think your height will be an issue towards passing long-term. (Well, maybe it's different in your region, but just wanted to throw in my 2 cents.)   I can relate to the hands thing though. If I ever hold something in front of the camera to take a photo of it, I feel like I have to crop my hands out so they don't "out" me. (I admit that that's silly.)

I noticed something like this too once I socially transitioned. I am so accustomed to people referring to me as a guy and using the right name, that socially I feel fine most of the time. This just makes me more aware of how physically uncomfortable I get sometimes.

Some of them are us.  I view while logged out sometimes.  But I also know that so much of this forum is public.  I really wish more areas were "members only."  I'm aware that stuff I post here is publicly viewable, so I never post last names, first names of other people, pictures, or give my location.  I tend to think my husband and GF would be displeased at the few things I do post here.... and they may be right.   Our times are pretty uncertain, and it seems to be "fox hunting season" out there.

On May 4, the Trans Chorus Of Los Angeles did a whole 90 minutes of music that was all written by Trans composers and all of our singers and musicians were Trans / NB.  Several of the pieces were actually written by our chorus members.  (I was running a $3,500 set of video cameras on the show and am editing the the massive gigabytes they put out today. We had several guest artists either on stage or who contributed material.  One of the artists was Wrabel who wrote the song The Village which he has dedicated to the Trans Community and describes a young Trans child and the problems they had in their village.  The other MAJOR Trans Artist was Jennifer Leitham, a Bass Viol and Bass Guitar player who as a young man played with the Big Bands of the 60's and 70's in her male self into Transition, and wrote an autobiographical song entitled Manhood which tells of her love of the men she played with in the bands but her not really fitting as a man. Jennifer has played with the Chorus before and is always good music fun to have around.  Two of our members collaborated on a music and poetry piece simply entitled "I'll - - " which brought some tears with a promise to Trans Young People with the whole chorus shouting "I'll be there for you, I will be there for you" said for Trans Kids.  (We actually had a few Trans kids in the audience to hear it.)  My video editing program has about 40 minutes to go producing the main body of the edited video which has the actual song clips in the right order.  Next to put in the Title slides and the credits.  The stuff I get myself into.   The concert took place at the Renberg Theater which is part of the Los Angeles LGB Center in Hollywood.
