Dress Codes

All right, so I'm in the choir at my school. When we have a concert, my choir director tells the "girls" (ie. the sopranos and altos) to wear black formal clothes, and he tells the "guys" (tenors and basses) to wear tuxes. I sing alto. So for our last concert, I finally worked up the courage to get a pair of mens black formal pants and formal shirt instead of women's formal clothes. I was the only soprano or alto not in women's clothes, but I felt so confident and happy. However, the day after the concert, my choir director told us that he was not pleased with the overall way we were dressed, and so now we have a new dress code. We have to wear dresses, skirts, or these funny pants that look like skirts. After finally being able to express myself, now I have to go back to wearing girly clothes, and I really, really don't want to. I would so much rather wear a tux like the guys, but there is no way I'd be allowed to do that because I would look starkly different from all the other altos. I guess it could be worse; we could be required to wear dresses, but I'm still kind of upset about it. I don't know what I should do, whether I should talk to the choir director (which would be difficult, awkward, and possibly unsuccessful), rebel and wear what I want to wear (which could result in negative consequences), or just straw inhaler it up and wear the girls clothes (which would make me feel kind of terrible).

I hate the way society is so structured with regards to gender. It makes even little things like this difficult.

Hey Ryan. I'm a fellow musician, so I have had this problem as well in the past. I wore a tux for the first time in our last orchestra concert. The director knows about my gender change, and he was actually really happy to see me be myself and comfortable for the first time ever. He even came over and told me how good I looked. :D If I was you I would talk to your director. Musicians especially are very open minded people. He'll probably tell you it's fine to wear a tux. In my experience conductors are always moaning about the way the ensemble looks. This is usually because of the women. When you just say all black, especially to younger women they usually take free license. I've seen girls turn up to play in the orchestra wearing mini skirts and hotpants??? Not very appropriate for a concert. This was probably what your director was talking about, not the fact that you turned up in a tux. Have a chat with him. Let me know how it goes. xxx

Hi Ryan,

I would also suggest to talk to your director. You shouldn't feel miserable while doing something you like. That doesn't make sense.

I'm sure there will be a possibility to place you in a way it doesn't look funny or inappropriate in the whole picture if he's concerned about how the ensemble will look with you in a tux. Also, the people won't ralize it, they might just think you're some younger boy still having a girly enough voice to sing alto *lol*

I used to play theatre and once had to ask my director for a new role because the one he wanted me to play in an assignment was... well... somewhat explicit in different ways. He was kinda confused but gave me a rather androgynous role instead that worked well for me.

just wear the tux! if the director has a fit just explain your situation and if he reacts negatively then there's nothing to change into so haha you win. no but seriously, if you're worried about making the ensemble look weird then just remember that some older guys have high voices. some guy at my high school sings soprano!

Kymmie, it's hard to think of her as an ally when she's still re-posting anti-trans information. On the flip side my wife is supportive of everyone else in the LGBTQIA community, and reluctantly supporting me.   Hugs,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

I'm sorry you and so many others in the military, were assaulted and bullied, just for being who you are. I'm glad that you've seen your old therapist and seem to be better since 2001.   Hugs,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

@Sally Stone This is a great thread and resonates with me as well. Please keep it going!   +1 on leg hair. Mine basically stopped growing on its own in my early 30s (cause unknown), but I prefer the look. Was never comfortable with body hair.

One FB post from an old friend who lives 250 miles away and has no idea of any of this, and a news article this morning about someone with multiple mental problems  assert that transgender people are controlled by demons.   Me not happy.  Can't reason with some people.

Just really started reading this thread today and it is fascinating. Thank you for sharing @Sally Stone... I started shaving my legs (and chest and arms) about eight years ago when I was living apart from my wife. I decided then that there was no going back - I just love smooth skin and really hate hate hate body hair (I have quite a bit -- "Hey, nice sweater" people would say when I took my shirt OFF).   My wife is not thrilled but I think in time it just fades into the background and folks don't give it a second thought after the novelty of noticing it. And if they do harp on it, it's like why does it matter so much to you what my legs look like?  I am kind of here too -- I want to express myself more and more outwardly in a feminine way. But I don't hate everything about being a guy. I would probably go 100 percent female dress if society were more accepting of that (and family)...

I was stuck behind a truck for like 6 miles doing 30 in a 45mph zone and when I got the opportunity to pass it I took it. Sped up and passed it and then noticed the flashing lights behind me… I just got my first tickets (other than parking tickets) in the 26 years that I have been driving. The speed limit changed in that area and it was a long downhill grade so apparently I was going 60 in a 40 zone. I was so nervous that I was shaking. Speeding and no registration (it is fully registered and insured but I couldn’t find the registration card). It was still affirming though in that I used my license showing my name to be Lorelei and got “maam’ed” by the cop. He was very professional and told me to plead not guilty and that he would reduce the charges if I came to court. Hopefully he will reduce the ticket to something that doesn’t give points. He told me that I should have given him my PBA card (a friend of mine’s husband is a cop had given it to me) with my license, not after the ticket is already written. The registration ticket will go away once I provide proof that it is registered.  I already ordered the replacement registration from NYS DMV online. Unfortunately the registration is still registered to my deadname of Rory so I will have to bring that up to the judge unless I can get to DMV first to change it first. Overall, this morning sucked.
