Hi everyone, sorry I've not been around in the past week, my Internet connection conked out last weekend and has only just started working again! So much has happened in the last week when I look at it rationally it's amazing but in my heart everything still seems so far away, but everything is really positive. Sorry it's a bit bloggish, I love reading all posts about how everyone else is getting on though.

Doctors visit, HRT

First and foremost, big news first, My girlfriend and I have now seen Dr Curtis. I have Finasteride for my hair (but I'm not taking it yet until I have the OK from the sperm storage people (see below) or we've banked the sperm), a letter confirming I'm under treatment for transsexualism (e.g. for giving to people/organisations if they make a fuss about changing my name/gender on their records), another clinical type letter for medical professionals talking about my case history... and my informed consent forms for oestrogen which he has signed! :D The forms require me to hold on to them for four weeks before signing, but the implication is that after that I can go back as soon as I want and I'll have oestrogen! Yay! A lingering area of concern though is whether my migraine will get worse with oestrogen therapy, but it's an unknown quantity until we try it.

He also said I shouldn't bank on needing FFS as I don't have much brow-bossing and my nose is small. He also said my shoulders were small and not wide and that I'm slim! No doctor has ever said that to me before. All good things!

Banking sperm

Before starting HRT though, we need to bank sperm, and that has been proving tricky. The cryopreservation places seem pretty lax about replying to emails so it's making it difficult to get things done. Of the ones who have replied, they're divided into those who want a GP referral and those who'll work with you direct. My regular (NHS) GP doesn't yet know I'm gender dysphoric/transsexual because we're doing everything we can with private health care as it's so much quicker, easier and less degrading, so they're a non-starter. Of the others they seem variable quality. I think we've settled on a company called Andrology Solutions because they've been the most helpful and they'll arrange for the sperm to be moved to any clinic worldwide at our request (no other provider has offered us this and one day we may move to Canada). They're also only one of two places who have known that they can legally store sperm longer than 10 years. The only down side is that they're down in London so that'll be another day of traveling each time we deposit a sample.

Voice therapy

I asked at the doctors appointment, but the outlook wasn't good. Apparently they're rare (no surprise ;) ). BUT! I've found one, and he's got 15 years of experience working with transsexual voice, also teaches at a hospital and it seems like he's pretty good and professional, ENT experience etc. Costs aren't too bad either. Before we can do anything he wants do a nasendoscopy to examine my vocal cords (£100), then the first session is £120 (1 hr) and he'll do some computerised voice analysis to see what achievable with my voice, and after that sessions are once per month at £80 a time. He claims 6-8 sessions are typical. It's all most cost though. (My savings for a mortgage deposit seem to be being spent.)

And finally...

In a really nice piece of news, I've had a couple of people unsure if I'm genetically male or female recently! It's really nice - it's a big improvement from definitely male. One was a friend of a friend who I met at a birthday party and the other was a lady in her 60s in a supermarket yesterday. We were just leaving the ice cream aisle when she asked me to reach some ice cream for her. As I walked over to help she was saying "Ohh, thank you so much, you're such a nice... *looks up and down to try to figure it out* ... height!" She said it in a really nice and friendly way and wasn't the least bit bothered I was andro, but just pleased to have me help her reach the vanilla Häagen-Dazs. I was delighted she recognised as me as androgynous.

Amy, everything seems to be falling into place for you (except the Internet thingy :P ).

Congrats on all of it, Hon. You're on your way and the train is leaving the station. All aboard for Womanhood!

Dang, girl........you are jammin'!

Just be careful to not get too caught up in it all and let your studies slip......OK?

That's great!

Makes everyone happy (and envious) for you!

Keep us posted on how it's all going, alright?

Good!

wow amy you are really moving forwards, i forgot to ask the doc about the hair when i went, though will be going back this time with a letter for hrt going to try and book in for next few weeks. are you planning on going full time soon

No definite timings on going full time yet, Sparkles... but I guess it depends on the definition of full time. I'll probably be at least partially out at university before Christmas (telling my thesis supervisor), but not fully out to the department until early next year sometime; legal name change in the next 6 months (?). How quickly will depend what reaction my supervisor thinks I'll get from the rest of the department.

This stuff seems to be the major talking point for "conservatives" these days.  Just shows that they don't know what they're talking about, and don't particularly care.

Mother's Day, so I thought I'd do the right thing and cook. So, we got Chinese takeaway! 😆   Actually, we planned it days ago, just thinking that tonight we would treat ourselves. Complete with a lovely bottle of Cab Sav.

Exactly.   A plain old "Good morning" should always suffice, for example, whether the recipient expects a gender specific greeting or not.

Hi awkward yet sweet, yeah, I tried dumping her but my current health insurance keeps directing me back to her as my primary, yet there are other doctors to choose from, but they are far away.

Hi Birdie, I can relate to that.

This sort of stuff makes my blood boil. A prospective state politician has gained approval from his party's state council to run in their state election next year.   He once stated that the + part of LGBTQIA+ is where pedophiles are categorized.   For clarity, in Australia the Liberal party is our main conservative party. They have lurched further to the right over the past 10 years or so. Our main progressive, union backed party is Labor.   WA Liberal party approves Dr Thomas Brough, candidate who linked LGBTQIA+ community with paedophiles - ABC News

Happy Mother’s Day    I have to be at church earlier than normal for a mic check.  I have been going over what I am to say, both silently reading and reading it aloud.  My concern is that my voice will freeze as it sometimes does.     I felt I was honored very highly yesterday by my minister and supporter on my journey.  He and another minister are Standing together to become the next co-moderators of the Presbyterian Church (USA).  They included me to receive an advance copy of their initial submission.  I was one of only 6 people listed on the email to receive this.  Later this week it will go out to all the voting commissioners that will be in Salt Lake City for the meeting.  I have asked to be allowed to attend the meeting to support him and Rev CeeCee Armstrong, whom he is standing with.    We’ll time to get ready .   Willow

Nup. Not an option. You need to keep going and keep us all in the loop, and we need to keep seeing your beautiful smile!   Party, schmarty. I'm 61 and haven't had a birthday party since I was 30. Even that was just a crummy meal at the pub with a few friends who we have since lost contact with. Don't sweat it.

On behalf of everyone reading your entries here @Sally Stone, THANK YOU for creating such an informative thread. But there is one thing you might have neglected to say at the end, and that is, "And they all lived happily ever after!" ❤️   Reno sounds like a pretty good place to call home. I understand the attraction of living in a place that is not too big but not too small.   I look forward to reading your subsequent posts about specific aspects of your journey.

Hi and welcome. A few things...   1. You're right, you can't trust your friends w/r/t the question of passing. How would they even know if you pass or not? My sister used to do the same thing, telling me that no-one knew I was trans and that to her I just looked like a cis woman. I still don't know if she was serious or just trying to make me feel good, but I learned to not listen to her on that topic.   2. Buuuut, having said that, I thought I looked good, and I think that is all she was really trying to tell me, that she liked how I looked as a woman. Maybe this is obvious, but I feel it gets overlooked: passing and looking good are not the same thing, not even remotely. Your friends (I presume) are trying to tell you that you look good as you are.   3. Having said all that, I think non-passing transmascs have a harder time than us non-passing transfemmes. All I have to do to get gendered correctly 95% of the time is wear a dress and makeup and only a few seriously ignorant folks and diehard transphobes misgender me. For you, it's much harder to find signifiers powerful enough to send the same message.   So in short, I don't have any answers, except that you're right, it sucks, and I hope the situation improves over time. But passing isn't everything. Maybe you're right, and in a less conservative state it wouldn't happen so often, because you'd have more people like you surrounding you. I know that where I chose to live while transitioning has been a big part of making the process a positive experience. I'd hate to be in Texas atm.

Thank you, ladies.   At the time I went from euphoric (my normal state) to not euphoric in an instant, and the lingering thought was one of self-doubt, manifesting itself with the unsolved question that maybe I never really felt like I had the soul of a woman, I just thought I did. I know I'm not the only one to ever feel this way. All part of the ride on this roller coaster I guess.   Yep, and yep. Makes sense now.
