Gender Therapy- The Costs?

Hello everyone, CD and possible TG here and I'm wondering, does gender therapy cost a lot? I'm from Canada (the flag on the left is a dead give away shh :P), in British Columbia (if it matters) and I'm hopping that I can find one that is cheap-affordable =/. I've read that some therapies cost like ...110 bucks per h? I wanna do therapy so I can know for sure if I am TG (I have a bit of confusion, but a lot of for-sure-ity (gotta love my made-up words!)), to get hormones perscribed to me and, if it all pulls through, the ultimate goal :P (i don't even call that by name , for some of you. SRS for those who dunno :P).

Also, a few other questions about gender therapy:

How often do you usually visit a therapist?

AND

How long until you are perscribed hormones?

I have more, but I forgot them , they will come to me :)

Thank ya all for taking the time to read and/or answer me :).

The cost for a gender therapist usually goes around 90-100 dollars a hour in the US where I live in Texas. The amount of visits until you get a letter for HRT is usually up to the therapist unless you find a friendly doctor. Also, some therapist use informed consent and want to have a certain amount of visits to get to know you and then make that call(usually at least a few months). I started out going to a therapist every two weeks and now I just go once a month since She got to know me in a few months time and I live in a quite area so not much happens in my everyday life and she was willing to give me my HRT letter if required by a doctor and all. The therapist I use charges $80 a hour which is what I usally do a hour once a month, at first I went every two weeks just to talk everything out and let the therapist get to know me and ask any questions and also for me to work out any problems I might have or had have lately. Also, I would check around with the members either in your area are those that know about the therapist in your area. Try to find one that is experienced and has a good referral by others that have used them. I would make sure you talk any questions or confusion over with a therapist( they are usually good listeners and give good advice to help you make your own choice). Good luck and all.

Sweetheart....Therapist visits can be quite expensive...

You'll need to check around, but some charge on a sliding scale according to your income....

Also there are online Gender Therapists that charge about $125 for four one hour sessions...

Usually you can get your HRT letter in 12 weeks (3 months) ...So, you can get your letter for about $400 worth of therapy...

I know several people here that have done it that way and the letters are accepted by doctors for HRT.

Here's our listing on our site here...give it a look.....OK?

Oh..well that isn't too bad. Once a month? Ooh :). I thought it was closer to once a week..man 40-120 bucks a week would be TORTURE =/. Ty Laura Renee

Hmm.. Ty Donna Jean, I'll have to look into doing it online as well (I didn't know you could!).

Ty both of you and every1 who spent the time to read this. I'm still looking for input from many people, so please don't feel that it is too late to post.

PS: A new question has derived from it all...A HRT letter is what you need to get hormones? (lol sorry, I don't know a ton about this topic yet. I've only started to seriously research the whole TG and TS thing for the last 2 weeks. Forgive my lack of knowledge :)).

Chelsea, Donna Jean is spot on. That is an accurate range for prices for in-person therapy. How often you go per month is up to you, not the

therapist.

An HRT is exactly what you think it is. Most doctors require such a letter before they will administer hormones for the purpose of gender transition. In some

places it is no longer required by mutual agreement between the therapist and physician, but how widespread that is I'm not sure. The Standards of

Care suggest a three month course of therapy before the letter is issued.

thx carolyn for your post!

I think I do want to go to one, to make sure that I would truly classify as someone who should the the surgery. I'm not sure if I've been acting "manly" on purpose to avoid being teased (I was when i was much younger, because I cried easy when others said hurtful things. I also was, and still am very skinny and overall a lot more femenin than all the guys back then). I took that test...I can't remember the name (im sure you know what i'm talking about), that one that tells you an estimate on how TG/androgyne/Cd etc. you are (it was like the COAG something..). I scored 140 on that, and was classified as a class 4 , highly probably MtF. So idk, i do want the hormones if my lust for being a female and my theory of why I act somewhat "manly" at times are true. Lol..it's all so confusing, I know you should be happy with who you are..but where do you draw the line between being able to accept your body and wanting it changed?

Chelsy....

Honey, please don't put too much trust in online tests ..the COGIATI is a fun test, but it hardly replaces a therapist...

Please get the care that you need as this is a life changing decission!

My GT charges $150 a session (50 minutes) and insurance covers $60 roughly. Sessions are as often as I schedule them, but she prefers every two weeks. So far I've started going every three because its expensive.

I got my GT from the list on this site. I pay a 100 and hour. When I first spoke o her she said she wanted 150 I was honest with I could afford and she agreed to 100. I go twice a week. I have been going for over a year now and have made great progress I'm a happier and my transition is moving along faster than I thought. I have been thinking of cutting back to once a month because I need money for other things. but she has said she would take less so I can still do the two days a month. As far as HRt here in NYC it''s easy you get them right away with out a note you have to go to the right place.

@Adrianna DanielleSeeing two different therapist for separate issues really helped me deal with the each of them on different levels. I hope this works for you too.   Hugs,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

I seem to remember the word "deplorables" being used not long ago.  Unfortunately so often appropriate.   Hugs,   Charlize

It was not that long ago that black people were banned from the University of Mississippi.  Schools were segregated and the same excuse of protecting the women (or girls) of old miss.  Times and many feeling have changed with time and federal intervention.  Unfortunately politicians love to separate and divide to gain power.     Hugs,   Charlize

I agree @Birdieto just "fit in", is what drove us to therapy. I'm not fitting in just to please someone with a closed mind. At least you know who your fair weather friends are now.   Hugs,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Yesterday in the lobby some of the residents were talking with me. One asked, "how come in all the TV commercials at the centre you don't appear in any of them?"   I explained that, "I'm an embarrassment to the centre and they don't know what to do with me." I get edited out!   Quite the differing options with the ladies at the table as some of them said, "that's discrimination", while others said, "they can see why."   Another lady said, "you would fair better if you cut your hair and went back to overalls, you should strive to fit in!"   Their opinions are as meaningful to me as rubbish. I did 45 years of trying to "fit in", and not doing that again. 😉

Gosh, missed Monday again.   Did you know that Producer Keith Oslen was distraught because the duo his recorded Buckingham-Nicks first album went nowhere? In walked Mick Fleetwood also distraught because once again Flleetwood Mac lost a guitarist in Bob Welsh and he was at least going studio shopping and came to Sound City in LA because he'd heard the drum sound they got there was incredible. He asked Oslen to play something recorded there. Olsen played some of Buckingham-Nicks and Fleetwood loved the sound of the guitarist and wanted Buckingham. Olsen said he comes with Nicks because Olsen managed both. Fleetwood didn't want Nicks but eventually the remaining Mac members said okay and next thing you know - the Fleetwood Mac that scored a huge following was born. Sadly right after the "Fleetwood Mac" album and before "rumours" was recorded, the band got huge headed and got rid of Oslen so they didn't have to play him a lot of music they wanted to keep. Olsen did ok after by recording Ozzy Osbourne, the Grateful Dead, Whitesnake, Pat Benatar, Heart, Santana, Saga, Foreigner, Scorpions, Journey, The Babys, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Joe Walsh, 38 Special, and Eric Burdon & the Animals, among others. BTW - Olsen was also a members in 1967 of a band called Music Machine (not the James Taylor one) that scored a huge hit with the song "Talk Talk"

Still on contentment high from Sunday.
    • Heather Shay
CONTENTMENT The relentless pursuit of happiness often overshadows the more subtle yet profound emotional state of contentment. While happiness may be a fleeting high, contentment is the gentle hum of satisfaction that resonates through the soul, offering a sustainable path to life satisfaction. Oscar Wilde's poignant observation encapsulates this truth: "True contentment is not having everything, but in being satisfied with everything you have."
