Electrolysis Pain Managment?

Hi Ladies!

My mate has gotten into the process of removing her beard. We've been going to the electrolysis for six weeks now and any time the electrolysist gets anywhere near her upper lip or jaw line the pain gets to be a bit too much. So we were looking around for topical numbing agents and I've found many but...I've never ordered from any of these sites before and I'm always hesitant to just throw my money out there. Ya know? So has anyone used anything to help with the pain of hair removal? Thanks in advance!!

Emla cream is pretty good, but you probably need a script for it. I used that and downed a loricet about an hour prior to for mine. I slept through a lot of it. :)

Honey.....

I do electrolysis....I've got 35 hours done so far....

I take some ibuprofen before my appointment...

A topical is used on my upper lip and it is 5% Lidocaine...that is prescription strength...

And it STILL hurts like helll!

Last week my electrologist said that some dentists will give Novocaine injections before an electrolysis session...

You could call around and see if you could find one that will accomadate...

Good luck, Honey....

Hi,

does ibuprofen realy helped you? I was allways thinking that this help you to remove existing pain and not to hide new incoming pain. I was allways wondering that it istill hurt if you hit your thumb with a hammer while on ibuprofen. I think electrolysis is the same.

I am not a big fan of using pain killers often. You can addicted to them. I would try something different, maybe meditation or so.

The last time I went to a hole body waxing session the master of pain (ups sorry master of wax ;-)) was wondering about my pain level. The funny thing was, that I was completly relaxed. Maybe this would be a solution. Don't be afraid about the pain it will went away after it.

Nelly, Honey....

I'm not really sure if it works that way or not as I have always taken it before I go....

I know that it helps existing pain because I use it for that....

But, in any case, electrolysis can be painful...there are so many nerve endings on one's face that one poke can sting like heck and the next one right next to it ...you'll feel nothing!

Many times I just grit my teeth and take my mind somewhere else!

HUGGS!

Hi Phxbrising,

Ive also heard of getting upper lip numbed . Upper lip and jawline are really a pain. I thought things were bad with laser. I start electrolysis

in Jan,. so if you hear of ANYTHING , please post. Best of luck, viv. :)

You can purchase over the counter ointments with benzocaine. It is one of the most widely used topical anesthetics.

For laser treatment, I just take an aspirin. It dilates the blood vessels which increases the cooling of the skin which helps keep the skin from burning. It also helps me tan rather than burn.

I spoke to someone about dentist injections recently as I was thinking the same thing and they told me how the face has clusters of nerve endings so if you get an injection anywhere on your face it will only numb that small area. I don't know how true it is but that and the cost is enough to consider other opinions.

This shows the difference between the two most common creams used by the TG community, EMLA like Ashley mentioned and ELA-max 5:-

Below are two letters I received, showing that the same product can be considered ideal by one consumer and worthless by another:

Letter #1

I appreciate your site. However, the information on Ela Max 5 in your topical anti pain section is misleading. After using EMLA for almost a year, I tried Ela Max 5 in my last electrolysis session based soley on the information you provided on your site, rating Ela Max as (or almost as) effective as EMLA. Not only did Ela Max 5 not work nearly as effectively as EMLA, but it DIDN'T WORK AT ALL. This cost me pain, and over $100 for the product and an electrolysis session which I had to cut short by 45 minutes because the pain was unbearable. My electrolygist informed me that of all the clients she's had, only one found Ela Max 5 helped at all. Everyone else who used it found it of not help whatsoever. While I think your intentions are good, you are doing a disservice by providing such misinformation which causes people pain and expense.

Letter #2

The ELA-Max 5 worked great! It was just as effective as EMLA and it had several advantages. First, ELA-Max 5 does not need a plastic covering like EMLA does. And secondly, you only have to put the ELA-Max 5 on about 30 minutes before treatment. I began to feel its numbing effects in about 15 minutes with the full benefit in about 30 minutes. When I used EMLA, I had to put it on at least 1 hour before treatment to get the full benefit. Another secondary benefit of the ELA-Max 5 is its effects seemed to last longer on me. So there was no worry about losing protection before a session was over. One caution though, make sure you put the ELA-Max5 on thick. If you are too stingy, it will not work as well.

I get the feeling one small factor it not considered and that it the amount of power each operator and client use, I've heard ranges from 200ma to 900ma.. could be something to discuss deeper...?

The quote suggests that everyone reacts differently and could be an idea to try a few different products to find the one that is best for your situation, I plan on trying the ELA-max 5 first as it seems to be the least fussy. If you follow some of the links on that site it shows the difference of the ingredients of each!! Quite a good website actually :P

I still haven't decided on a pain killer though, I've never taken one that actually works yet...lol! :P

Oh yeah this is all from reading not from experience, I plan to start electroysis soon as well, very soon ....eek!

Hey honey

You could also try "Liquid Orajel Severe Pain Formula" it has 20% Benzocaine.

I got some on my outer lip and it was num for about a half an hour.

You can find it in with the tooth Paste in most stores, I got mine at Target.

Hope this helps.

My experience is very similar to yours, Sally.  When I first started to socially transition I thought 'blending in' was the best approach.  It did not work AT ... ALL.  I was misgendered so often. So now I try to feminize as much as my wardrobe (and time) allows.  For 'girls' my age I believe I am far more fashionable than other women.  So, lately I have been much more successful at 'passing'. But also like you, I am not really trying to fool people.  I expect they assume I am Trans and I just hope they respect my femininity and my humanity.

Actually, they did back at the times of the AIDS pandemic in the 80's.  Some of my slightly older than I am Gay friends were beaten up and thrown out of gender correct restrooms back then.

I'm not sure the past is a sure guide to future needs.  LGB have no dog in the fight on public restrooms, for example.  That is T only, and only some T at that.

When I appear on the radio and podcast it will be in discussion with a political scientist who will discuss those aspects. I’m focussed on the implications for kids and why the recommendations are flawed. But yes, I will probably briefly paint the political background.

GFY, @Betty K. Don't forget to write about the motivations for the Cass Report, and who paid for its conclusions. "Cass Met With DeSantis Pick Over Trans Ban: Her Review Now Targets England Trans Care." — Erin Reed  And now its back to America, 'surprise, surprise.'

Hi @Sol. Great to hear from you and your updates are all encouraging. Wonderful all the support you're now getting from your family and to hear you sounding so positive and hopeful. Career as an archivist sounds like a great path - sensible and not too specific, but endlessly fascinating at the same time. Not only do museums employ archivists, but so do many other institutions such as historical societies and universities. Your university may have its own archives which you could visit and learn about. Take care & be well!

Hi @KathyLauren no worries!   I’ve only ever gotten a two-year degree in programming, and that one was just because I existed in the U.S. Air Force as a coder long enough to qualify for all of the technical credits, then I just took CLEP and DANTES tests to get the rest.   Most of my work has been in the security arena, lots of C/C++. Worked as a Red Hat hacker for a few years, and spent a few more years in gov’t spaces.

Hi, Amanda.  Your story sounds quite familiar, though my pesky body part didn't need the attention of a urologist.  You are in good company here!

Oops.  Sorry, @AmandaJoy, I see you have already posted an introduction.

Hi, @AmandaJoy.  Welcome to Trans Pulse.  Be sure to check out the various forums and join in any threads that interest you.  We'd love to read all about you in the Introductions forum.   -----   I started programming in Dartmouth Basic in high school back in the early 1970s.  I did my degree in Computer Science.  After a brief stint in the "government flying club" (RCAF), I worked as a programmer-analyst and systems analyst for about 25 years.    I am retired now, but I still enjoy programming.  I write a lot of the code for my astrophotography observatory.

WOW HAS IT BEEN A WHILE SINCE I'VE UPDATED!!! Welp, I'm updating now, and it's been a lot of changes.  1. My mom is starting to come around a little (I think). She does refer to me more as her child now, and even offered to help me cut my hair so I think we're making a little progress. I'm still planning on going on T later and I'm gonna start saving up to buy trans tape (I can't wear binders because I have GERD), so hopefully the progress stays. My dad, sibling, friends, and my paternal grandparents have all been super supportive and I'm really lucky for that. My sibling also goes out of their way to introduce me as their brother and it makes me so happy :D 2. I've been socializing a lot more! Mostly on Discord, but I've made some new friends and I'm really happy about that!  3. I'm on birth control! I still need to go to the gyno but my GP got me on the depo shot and it's been working for me so far! My dysphoria has gone through a lot of ups and downs, especially around periods, but that source is pretty much gone now and I feel way better. I do have more dysphoria centered around my chest now but that's pretty easily fixed with baggy shirts most of the time.  4. I know 100% now that I'm hoping for a uterine ablation (cauterizing the uterine tissue so it doesn't grow) at some point in the future and it's likely something I'll have to save up for but from my research it's a lot less invasive and safer than a hysterectomy so I definitely recommend it if people are able to access it. I also know that after that, I want to save up for a reduction to combat the chest dysphoria, and I still like having it sometimes so I'll keep a bit of it (I'm shooting for an A cup, I'm a C cup currently).  5. I've been writing more and I've even got some ideas for art projects! I also got an Archive of Our Own account where I post my finished writing, and I'm starting a book project at my mom's urging (she said she wanted that as her Christmas present so I'm gonna try, might not get it done this year though). I haven't gotten to write much lately but I'm hoping to change that this month.  And finally, 6. I'm gonna be a college junior and I have a career path to pursue! I'm gonna be an archivist, hopefully working for a museum (not too specific on where, I just like museums).  So yeah, a lot of stuff has happened and it's been pretty good!

Hi Thea!   Professional coder since ‘90, hobbyist since ‘83. C/C++, C#, Java, Ruby, Python, Ada, COBOL, Fortran, various flavors of BASIC. Love C, but it’s mostly been about Python recently.
