Yesterday I wondered the same thing. On YoutTube there's a Dutch vid where people go out and ask people in the street what they think transsexualism is and what their opinion is on it.

A lot of them said something along the lines of 'isn't that when a man wants to wear women's clothing?' & refer to dragshows.

Some of them did get it right in saying 'that's when a man wants to become a woman' or shouting the name of Holland's most famous transsexual Kelly. I believe only one person said something about feeling likve you've been born in the wrong body.

Not one of them mentioned anything about women wanting to become or feeling like they're men.

It keeps on surprising me how little people know. About transgenderism, for one, but with all stuff like that; eating disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, autism, Asperger, - just, everything. Bring on the prejudices, forgeddaboottherest. I guess most people just don't care. Either you're mainstream normal or... you're not. And if you're not, you can be crazy or freaky and that's all nice and easy and we don't have to think about it again. Thus, transsexuals are men (!) who wake up one day and decide they want to wear women's clothing or have an operation.

Thank goodness the world is such a simple place...

I knew FTMs existed of course but didn't think it was all that common, I suppose a lot of FTMs just spend their lives as tom boys and never really take it any further than that. similarly a lot of MTFs never go much further than cross dressing, but I suppose tom boys are a lot less of a society shocker than guys prancing around in dresses, even if it is almost as popular a taboo as self gratification.

When i went to my first TransFamily meeting last December i was blown away, at least half of the members were transmen, up until that time i knew they existed but not in the number i saw, i think it has to do with after being on T they assimilate so well into society, i probably have walked by and even talked to some and did not even know it.

You are right!

For so many people the world is a very simple place.

For them I would like to rewrite two lines from the Kipling Poem - "If"

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs you obviously do not understand the problem!

Life is simple for an Ostrich with its head in the sand until something big comes along to bite it in the highest exposed area in that position!

We need too pull a few people's heads out of wherever they may be hiding them and try to explain a few things to them.

I know that transmen exist - I like almost everyone that I have talked to.

I am only a little upset that they are all so much younger than I am!

You would be surprised how many I know in the flesh. Not many in my generation.. but they are out there.

MTF is just more common than FTM. Also MTF sticks out more than FTM. I think that's a big point. People don't spend their time researching gender identity disorder. They only know what they see and what stands out.
