Andrea's Brief Shopping Tips

1. Do not be nervous! Everybody, buys anything they need, anything they are interested in. Do not worry about being judged. Cashiers aren't meant to judge the customers. Most likely, they won't care who is buying what, they will care about ringing you up so that they can get to the next person in line. Complete strangers, also don't care. At least, they shouldn't. Ignore anybody who gives you looks. But I am going to say one thing- in my experiences, nobody was even paying attention to me. In fact, at a yard sale one time, I noticed I was going through the clothes just like the other women, and one of them even asked me if I knew what the prices were, and she didn't bat an eye at all that I was holding a provocative bra outstretched in front of me.

2.Unsure of size? 99 times out of ten, go for the larger. I've made this mistake too many times, and indeed, I have a pair of panties and some nice sweatpants I have to return. Before that, it was a top, and in between that, I have another top tucked away in my closet that is too late to return. It is true, that if you get a size too large, it will not be fun to wear at all, and it might as well be (in most cases) a size too small. However, if you are not sure whether or not you have the right size, go with the larger. If you are not certain you can fit into this size, go for the other, larger size. I have never once had to return things for being too large. I know in the store, you will look at it and say, Oh this looks like an okay size, and, when off your body, it looks perfect. Trust me. Unless you are really, really adept at this, its not. Go for the larger.

3. Try to look at things you need, rather than what you would like to add to your collection. Of course, this tip is subjective. I soon realized after a shopping spree, that I had one top, to match two skirts and pair of pants. The problem was, that the shirt didn't match both articles of clothing, and the top was skin tight, so it would not always be what I would want to wear on all days. The bottom line is, it might be a cute skirt or a cute dress, but you have to decide how often you are going to wear it, and how well it will fit into your wardrobe.

But the bottom line is truly, get what you enjoy. Just be smart as to what it is you are choosing to enjoy.

Andrea S .....I'm finding out that you are right on. No one pays much attention including the SAs. Concentrate on what you want and don't look around furtively. Look folks in the eye and pass pleasantries or just smile. Even if you bump into someone you know don't act nervous. Confidence and a clear mind should get you through it. I have tried stuff on in a changing room. I have used the men's changing room in GW without incident. If you are in fem then there is a small possibility of some sort of comment.

I've only had a problem once and that was in California at a Sears back in the 70's when exchanging a skirt that was to small. The SA was hasseling me about not knowing the size. Back then I had said it was for my wife.

I've felt more nervous when I went into a Victoria's Secret to buy my wife a garter belt to hold up surgical stockings. Couldn't find any other store that carried them.

Excellent advice, Andrea. Very helpful.

Yes, salespeople only want a sale, especially these days. They couldn't care less who they're selling to, and the bigger the bill the more they will

smile at you.

Confidence is the key. You've got that exactly right. If you act fearful, people will notice and wonder why. If you're confident, they will figure you

know what you are doing and won;t give you a second look.

Good on you, girlfriend!

I agree with all you have to say, especially about the care level of others. People are so involved in their own worlds that unless you are making a concerted effort to be noticed, no one will care and if they do, they would never think to say anything unless they were an insufferable busybody at which point there's not much you can do. Fortunately, I've never come across busybodies. Most people just don't see what we are sure they must be looking at.

As far as trying clothes o, I'm still not up to doing it in the store, but I will occasionally take a risk and buy something that might be too small just in case it's not. I'm not afraid to return clothes. I know the size levels of pretty much all the Target designers and Old Navy as well. ON tends to run a little larger, so I like shopping there.

Hi, Riya and welcome to the forums!! You find lots of veterans here and many of us are in fairly early stages of transitioning. Ask questions, and jump in wherever you feel comfortable adding to the discussion.

I've been fortunate in growing my hair out. I had a few thinner spots - typical spots - but have been using Hims' hair growth treatment for about 6 months now and it had made a tremendous difference. I'm not sure how long I'll let it grow but I've been thrilled with how it's turning out.   Today I'm wearing this olive green high waisted 3/4 balloon sleeve midi dress with white sneakers.     I also received these today. Found them on eBay. I've been looking for a pair of brown riding boots but finding them in my size is hard and typically expensive. These were on end of season sale plus they gave me another 10% off so I ended up at about 40% of retail. They fit perfectly (12M). Unfortunately (or fortunately) boot season is over so I'll put them away until Fall.

A little bit about myself. I am a veteran and college student. I’m here to align myself and to continue to grow. I myself so happen to be a transgender woman. This is as far as I have made it in transitioning. Looking forward to the future!

We should submit all of the poetry from this site's Poetry Forum and see what they think of all that good stuff!    I'd love to frame their rejection letter.   Carolyn Marie

Your brother is the person who has decided that "sin" is involved because he has lost control of a part of his life by you taking on your authentic self.  It is not because you have committed any Sin per se, but because he is no longer controlling your life, evangelicism or other wise.  He is using formula words and ideas hoping to re-gain that control over you.  Your Roman Catholicism vs. his choices of religion would be enough to do it in many many cases.  Your being Trans is just one more area of his losing his control.   If your brother were also Roman Catholic, I suspect he would be the same way about you on just the Trans issue itself no matter what your priests would tell him -- he has lost control of your life and is afraid he has lost control of his life.    Family members of any religion who fear loss of control will often cite scriptures they believe support their Position.  If Bible verses are needed, Matthew. 10:34-8 which speaks of division in families over religion would be a casual point directed at your brother's control issues.

This might help. These are the grace and lace letters dealing with Christianity and transgenderism from someone who struggled with the "conflict".   https://www.digitaltransgenderarchive.net/catalog?f[collection_name_ssim][]=Grace+and+Lace+Letter&sort=dta_sortable_date_dtsi+asc%2C+title_primary_ssort+asc

Back again love conquers all I don’t think my wife and kids would hold me hostage but if I explain it right to them it might prove how much I’ve lived them over many years

I am an evangelical  I am also transgender.  This is an issue. I have read up on it.  I am not an expert, but I have done a lot of reading.   One thing I do not get about people who take that position is that evangelicals are all about salvation by faith alone by Christ alone by grace alone - unless you are transgender.  Then you cannot be saved, these say, unless you do the work of un-transgendering yourself.  Which is, practically, impossible.  I have read the "solutions" and I don't buy them, obviously, because they do not work.    In evangelicalism salvation is by faith alone, Christ alone, grace alone, without any merit of our own.  That means, to an evangelical, we come to Christ as we are,  in the words of a glorious hymn,   1 Just as I am, without one plea, but that thy blood was shed for me, and that thou bidd'st me come to thee, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.   2 Just as I am, and waiting not to rid my soul of one dark blot, to thee, whose blood can cleanse each spot, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.   3 Just as I am, though tossed about with many a conflict, many a doubt, fightings and fears within, without, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.   4 Just as I am, thou wilt receive, wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve; because thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.   We do not clean ourselves up BEFORE we come to Christ.  We let Him clean us up AFTER we come to Him.    Those who insist that transgender people cannot be saved are actually preaching another Gospel, a Gospel of works, and have wandered away from the glorious Gospel into works.  That is strong but true.   Struggling with legalism and grace, I have found more of God's mercy and grace available to me because I struggle with being transgender and seeking His resolution of it.  Which, not having the struggle, I would not have needed to seek Him earnestly on this.
