Questions About Therapists

Hi everyone,

I had some questions about therapists, or actually to people who had seen therapists, (not online)

If you could help me then great!

I want to make sure im not jumping into transitioning too fast, and find out im in way over my head.

I have really started to think of my future now. I have come up with 3 points i will be working on.

1) Save up money, alot of it, if possible

2)Work on my Voice!

3)Research and Therapy (includes Research of Therapists :P )

I will have to find a job for the first one, im pretty confident on where to start on the second, so now the third! :)

How much do therapists cost. This is a big concern for me, this determines when i will be able to start going. I have absolutely no clue.

For those who were living under a parent's roof, how much money did you save up to before you were able to live out on your own, with financial stability.

Any tips or what not to do's would be very help full.

I know some people will not be comfortable with revealing financial information. So to those, you can either PM me or if you dont want to i wont be mad... i promise ;)

But any help would be much appreciated

Hugs,

Jena

Hi Jenifer,

I am alot older than you but i can tell you i pay just over $200.00 a session, my insurance covers all but my $15.00 co pay. Many therapists will work on a sliding scale which means they will charge you by how much you can afford.

I like your list but i would add to it facial hair removal, either by laser or electrolysis, it takes along time to be completed and can cost as much or more than SRS/GRS.

Jennifer, insurance can work great if you a) don't have an HMO and B) if your therapist is willing to use a diagnostic code other than one for gender dysphoria or GID to

bill your insurance carrier.

I have an HMO so insurance isn't an option (I can explain why if you want to PM me). My G.T. charges a cash rate of $100 per hour, and would probably have

gone lower if I couldn't afford that.

There are also LGBT clinics in many cities that subsidize the cost.

The best thing is to find a G.T. that's convenient and talk to them. Discussing fees and options is perfectly fine and it won't bother them.

If you still have questions, post them here or send me a PM and I'll try to help.

HMO's are terrible if you have to go outside of the plan's network. However just because you have a PPO (If you do) is guaranty that the health insurance provider will not try and stiff you. I have a very low opinion of Care First at the moment for much this reason. :(

The therapists I've seen charged around $120-$170 an hour. As others mentioned, though, a lot do have a sliding scale. If you have insurance, most of them will file it so that the insurance will pay for it (I think they generally file it as for depression or something).

I have been seeing a GT which I located from this site. I live in NYC. she was charging me 100 dollars a session and I do two sessions a month. I have been seeing her for over a year. Lately I have been saving money for cosmetic work and she said she would charge me only 50.00. I have made wonderful progress with her help. She first asked for 150. I was falling apart when I contacted her. I first tried to e-mail a few Gt's but got no reply so phoned I the one that was close to get to and that was her. Good luck finding a Gt. I did not want to go through my insurance company besides they only pay for 20 session a year and I was afraid of getting GID on my medical records at the time. .

I found an LGBT councelor here who charges 45 EUR per session. It's just talk I think, not diagnosis etc. I've yet to see her, probably by next month.

I am a little confused about the word in your title there.    Defamation is a variation I know about, and it is akin to Libel and Slander in meaning, and could be the object of a court action or a couple of types.   If you are referring to the act of denying or taking away your feminine gender, ie. they keep using masculine names and pronouns or referring to you as  a "man" or "man in a dress", then yes it happens to me on rare occasion and if it is online, I simply block the moron doing it or leave the group where they are doing it, and may or may not come back if the person is there.  When people are willing to learn about Trans Folks I do give what are jokingly referred to as Trans 101 or even more in depth classes to the receptive and accepting audiences.  I DO NOT however try to teach a pig to sing, which as they say sounds like hell and annoys the pig.  If someone is invalidating your gender, get away from them safely and FAST.

My inner child likes to cuddle with Blahaj.  I know it's weird, but it works for me.

I'm not sure they can do this.  Not on line anyway.  LOL   Defamation?  Not that I personally know of.

Nice! I've found myself shopping around for astrophotography gear more than once but haven't taken the plunge yet. To close to a metro area to do it from my home.

It never occurred to me to be able to see them here in the south.   Maybe tonight if it's not cloudy.

Well, this last post brings my trans life up to date.  What happens from here is anyone's guess.  The next big milestone will be retirement, probably next year some time.  I don't think that will change things much for Sally because as I have stated previously, I am in a mostly happy place where she is concerned.    I do have a few more posts planned, as I would like to write in more detail about a few occurrences that were memorable to me.  Hopefully they will be of interest to others.    Hugs,   Sally

Has anyone been a victim of online defemination? and what to do about it?

Yes, this is very therapeutic. You are able to see different aspects of your own personality. There is the part which has survived life thus far through decision making and lots of trial and error. That part of you is your wise and capable parent. When you feel strongly identified with the scared child in you, you can turn to the wise parent part of you whom you trust to guide you. You have faith and trust in that part of you necessarily because it has gotten you this far. Naturally, we all have room for improvement and advancement, but you can only start where you are and try to do your best with what you have to work with and deal with. But by adopting this attitude, you see that wise parental part of you become stronger, wiser, and more steadfast and skillful. Then the child in you increasingly becomes more trusting and carefree.

You want to hear coincidence? I just posted that and my neighbor just texted me and said she has been up early because there were Northen Lights outside. Then 2 seconds later I get an extreme weather alert. “We are experiencing Extreme Geomagnetic conditions observed and continued severe geomagnetic storms expected to continue through the weekend”.

No you aren't!!  There were reports from Texas, Arkansas and the Carolinas of spectacular shows last night.  This is a once-in-a-lifetime event, the best show since 1938, someone said.  Tonight is supposed to be just as good.  (OK, maybe a twice-in-a-lifetime event.  )

@KathyLauren That’s absolutely beautiful. Love those colors! That would be so nice to see some time. I’m too far South to ever see these spectacular events.   Very Nice, Susan R🌷
