Hi all! I've been lurking for a bit and finally decided to speak up! It's difficult to even take this step; acknowledging something that I haven't been horribly truthful about with myself for years. So I might as well step in carefully.

A little about myself:

I'm 22 years old. From the Great White North. I'm a hoser through and through. But I'm thinking I'm a little different. I will consider myself a crossdresser at the moment, but I am trying to figure out who I am, what my motivations and needs are and where I want to go in my life. After some searching, who knows where I'll end up. After focusing on my career and the technical aspects of my life for so long, this whole personal thing is a little difficult.

The whole "self discovery" part is going to be difficult and slow. As with many of you have experienced, coming out will be quite difficult (if I chose to) due to my family's views, my academic department's general outlook on people and heck, the whole professional culture I am a part of. I'm in a technical field but I have had many many years of art training and background. I used to be quite active in the media and hold my own shows as a teenager. I was somewhat sought after and well known for some time, until I decided to paint for me only and focus my efforts on my academics rather than painting on such a high profile. Unfortunately, I'm not as gifted with fashion as I am with painting...

You all sound like fantastic people. I hope I can settle in! Don't hate me if I disappear for a while too! (I'm tres busy these days!)

Hello Kylah.

Do you mean, "Its a beauty way to go, Take off to the Great White North." from Bob and Doug McKenzie - Second city Television - Rick Moranis and Bob Thomas?

Never heard of them!

Welcome to the family, I was going to offer you a cup of hot cocoa and a plate of fresh baked cookies but you might prefer a pound of back bacon and a beer.

Do feel at home here we are very friendly and like to have fun while we offer support and love to each other.

Welcome home!

Love ya,

Sally

Well... I'm a little (quite a bit) south of there I guess. haha. You win!

Bob and Doug McKenzie

As promised.. >HUG<

I do like beer and bacon, but believe me.. I certainly act a *little* more feminine than those two hosers. Even when I'm out and about during the day as a guy! And definitely when I dress up in fem when I get home from work ;) I just wish there was a little more fem way to eat some bacon and have some brew. So I'll pass on the cookies (besides, I just ate a bunch of Timbits today! Too much sweet for one day!).

Thanks for the warm welcomes!

Welcome to Laura's Kylah-----Sally makes wonderful cookies but I could make u up a batch of Nanaimo bars. Just a hint about how best to fit in at Laura's---"Be Yourself!" That's what makes you a perfect fit in your new family here. So you are an artist with some notoriety working toward a career to be able to have a day job, LOL. You know there are a number of beautiful women here who are also "tech weanies"!

Hugs---Ricka

Hiya there! How are things up north in terms of public acceptance of CD?

Oh yay! You're an artist, too? I draw, myself. I mean, I don't draw myself--I draw other things. Well i draw myself sometimes, but you ge the idea.

It depends. I grew up in a single purpose town with a population smaller than that of my current apartment building. It could have been idylic; a 'happy days' type existance with endless forest and hills for a backyard. If not for the whole gender thing.

The city I live in now; claims one of the biggest and best attended 'Pride" parades in the world. The as yet uncrowned but likely new mayor of the city is a former Provincial health minister and openly married to another man.

depending on where you go IN the city there's plenty of acceptance. Oh and gay & Lesbian marriage (and DIVORCE) have been legal in Canada for... well I think nearly ten years. (I could be off on that number )

Hi! Sorry for the late reply... Things have been extremely busy between work, school, extra curricular projects and well.. I'm sure you get the picture!

I agree with what Joy said. I haven't come out to anyone so I can't provide you with any first hand accounts, but I do know that in general it varies. Again, similar to Joy, I grew up in a smaller town (although not THAT small) but the attitude there isn't overly tolerant of anything that they would consider abnormal. However, the city I grew up in is large enough that the people I know that came out as being gay or bisexual weren't totally shunned. I think their supportive families and friends really helped them, despite other people in the city / neighbours, etc disagreeing with who they are (and who really cares if someone else agrees anyways!).

Since then I've moved to a larger city that has a bit of a reputation for it's gay / lesbian / CD / transgender communities. I moved here for my studies and career, but the attitude in the city is nice sometimes. But it's still not that easy if you aren't in the right areas. And there always is the concern of acceptance from your friends and family. Right now, I'm surrounded by my peers, many of which are not tolerant. So I don't feel overly comfortable sometimes (thus hasn't come out). And there are so many different people of different backgrounds that there are sure to be as many (or more) intolerant people than there are supportive. So like, it just depends on who you surround yourself with.

So I think where I am living now will be great, once I can manage to surround myself with people of like and open minds. There are many great shops, and apparently a great community. And at the very least I have the girls (and guys) on this forum! (thanks again <hugs>)

Oh .. and what do you draw mostly? I trained for about 13 years and stuck with oil paints and natural scenes / animals / portraits mostly (nothing abstract). But I just melt when I get my hands on a nice soft pastel!

Wow! Seriously--the more I hear about Canada, the more I think it would be a cool place to live.

Okay, your 13 years of training makes me ashamed to have opened my mouth. I'm mostly self-taught with a couple of years of instruction back in college. I mostly work with regular old pencil and paper, varying between simple still lifes and things that can't be linked to here. -.-;

Good news is that I have nothing serious going on. The blood was coming from internal hemorrhoids, and the doctor says it's from the "typical American diet." Too much fat and carbs but not enough plant based fiber. A few other things were noted and biopsies on them for safety sake.    Hospital visit was grand with "most" of the staff addressing me as female. I did have "bra talk" with one of the CNA's. Even my discharged papers use my preferred name on them (Birdie).   So basically, adding more fiber to my diet will eliminate my internal hemorrhoids as well as lower my risk for cancer.

For that part, be glad you live in MS and not in CA or some other "paradise."    Unfortunately, right now in the USA it is about choices.  Choose to live in a mostly free state that doesn't want my gender to exist, or choose to live in a leftist place that accepts my gender but not my family or my faith, or how I want to live my life or the stuff I own.   As for the lawsuits... hiring a lawyer costs money.  And a "no fees unless you win" attorney probably won't take a case like this, as it is difficult to get money from folks who often don't have anything.  As they say, "it is hard to get blood from a turnip."

There's a couple of things.  First, since so many LGBTQ+ folks often vote Democrat, it is simply assumed that "LGBTQ = Democrat."  And to many, Democrat = enemy.  The fact that some of us don't vote for Democrats comes as a surprise to many.  You wouldn't believe how many different times I have had to explain how I vote, that I don't like Biden, etc...   And then, there's the flamboyant, over-the-top appearance and behavior of some.  When average folks see strange dress, wild colors, and the occasional provocative behavior in the news, they assume that it is the norm and that all LGBTQ+ folks are like that.  To them, "LGBTQ = weird."    I think that @Abigail Genevieve is right, part of it is lousy marketing.  And that will take a ton of undoing, because it has been going on for years.

Personally, I despise the antics of the "swing" states. Double-minded and unstable, shifting every time the wind blows.  OK, so the Lt Governor of Georgia doesn't like Trump.  Small potatoes.... given the 2020 results, nobody counts on Georgia anyways.

Its midnight here...so, technically morning   I had a really weird evening, and learned something new about politics.  My sister, who is running for public office as our township constable, received a "present" today, left on the hood of her patrol car.  An axe!  Wrapped in a bundle of sticks (dowels?).  The sheriff received one also, and a couple other candidates.  Now, my first thought was it was meant as a threat, and I was freaked out when she told me.  But she wisely identified it as political criticism:   During the 2020 election, a small dissident minority objected to our sheriff, and labeled him "Mussolini."  Apparently the symbol of the F@scist Party came from ancient Rome.  An axe, circled with rods, and the whole bundle was called "fasces" and represented the authority of the state.  Roman officials would have them symbolically carried ahead of them through the city on parade.  Other nations used it too, including the USA.  But since the 1920s, it is mostly associated with a certain political party.  Either I was never taught this in high school, or I didn't notice it.    So, it appears that this election season will have some interesting aspects.  And I have been asked to put gold spray paint on an axe, to make it like a trophy.

Welcome @Vivelacors!  For myself and many others here it is a similar theme.  But, I can assure it's never too late.  I hope that you will discover that as you explore and connect with more of us on the Forum.    You've already taken the most important first step ... Self-Affirmation.  I am wishing you the best in continuing this process. Deep breaths ... One step at a time

I can remember as a teenager being a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints and living in the bible belt. It was always a little hard-I think religion is just tricky anyway.    I was referred to a couple of ladies at church by my mum who gave me very good advice.  One has known those who are are trans- and how they approched it.    The other has two people in their life who identify differently. They also gave other ideas to assist me.     I do like ideas though.

If I am leaving the house I will almost always do makeup.  Not over-the-top but enough to feminize my face (eye shadow, mascara), lipstick, and a light cover of a concealer and foundation. I found my favorite lipsticks are Maybelline.  But the concealer/foundation I 'discovered' in Neutrogena Hydro Boost - Hyaluronic Acid based.  For 'older' gals like me I find it moisturizes and doesn't dry into those annoying fine lines (I have enough of those already).    Hopefully, after facial hair removal I might not feel the need as much.

I think it just comes down to a lot of people not knowing anything about the lgbtq+ community besides what reactionaries online and on TV say. In my experience, people who have a lot more day-to-day contact with gay and trans people, have lgbtq+ friends or family, coworkers, etc. are a lot more accepting because they know an lgbtq+ person, and know that we aren't anything like what the people on TV say we are.

Actually the bill seems to be so thoroughly confusing that I doubt that enforcement is even possible.  It could however incite vigilante style actions.  A false accusation against a "looks challenged" Cis woman is very likely to happen early on.  So what will happen in the case of those situations?  I have a script in mind over the sad average looking daughter of one of the legislators getting tangled into one of those situations.  I don't know whether it would be a comedy or a tragedy at the minute.
