Becoming An Art Teacher

Me--the transgendered dude-with-ladies-parts Michael wants to teach teens and adults about drawing comics?

I do not have a degree, but I do have some teaching experience. On DeviantART, I tutor and critique many young people that are eager to find their style.

A have a fun way of doing it, and have read and wrote manga all my life (or at least, 14 years of it...?)

I teach them to make their own style, add details, never fear trying something new or messing up, because you can start over. How to learn from copying, but not STEAL by tracing art and putting it up as yours.

As well as storyboarding and names. Helping figure out what panel flow is. Proper speech balloons. wide-angles, small panels, full pages and everything.

This would be a class for kids who know they wanna make a manga or a comic, but have no idea how to start or to improve. I would be happy to host such a class (and ask for money! A JOB!)

However... to teach REAL art, you need a collage degree. It wouldn't go towards any credits. I wonder if any kids would actually join up.

I'm no pro, or fancy-pants, but I do feel I have sort of a gift for making characters come to life... how to make them move, think, feel, love. Or even hate. And express it with drawing.

Do you think I could help teach young adults and teenagers how to develop their own style, and write a comic?

Looking at your drawings, I would say yes you could teach someone how to draw. You definatley have a talent and it is always good to pass that along. You don't always have to have a degree to teach something. You just have to put out an add saying you teach art and see if anyone signs up. It will be a slow start out of course without a degree but it can be done. Good Luck

Those drawing are incredible! Very professional looking! And I think it's great that you want to be a teacher! Perhaps you can start a website? I've known lots of people on the internet who managed to get a significant fanbase for their comics and art just by being decent (which you certainly seem to be) and updating on a regular basis. It's the internet; someone'll be interested.

You'll need a bachelor's degree, but you can get your credential at the same time. So... four years of school would be all it would take.

You are a very talented artist. I would strongly suggest that you persue further education in art, and teaching. I think you would make a truely fantastic teacher. It is important to find something that you love to do for a living. Doing something that you love to do for a living is not a job, it is a way of life and each day brings tremendous joy. I do what I love to do for a living, and I worked hard to get there. I can tell you this hon, I can tell that you love art and you love teaching... it is your calling.
