Looking For Some Movies In The Sci-fi/action Genre

Anyone have any recommendations? I really like movies like the Terminator movies, V for Vendetta, anything by Quentin Tarantino, and of course others like 300 and Fight Club. Yay testosterone lol. But I'm trying to find more good movies like these, other than The Matrix and the Godfather trilogy (neither of which I have seen, but am planning on watching soon...)

I grew up with pretty old-fashioned parents and so didn't watch a lot of movies, and what we did watch was stuff from the 60s, 70s, 80s, not the 90s and 00s most of the time. haha. So I feel like regarding movies and video games, I might have some catching up to do to other guys. :/ That's not to say girls don't watch these kinds of movies but they are more typically "guy movies", you know?

Anyway if anyone can recommend anything that would be great.

I have seen books on SciFi movies - and there a a bunch of good ones. Alien is spectacular - and is really a space horror film. The sequals are okay but the first one is best.

Also the remake of War of the World - Tom Cruise - kinda Holloywood, but very good.

And rent the new and the old 'The Time Machine." And compare them - fun

A Space Odessy - the original - awfully 70's now - but spectacular still - lotta weird concepts!

For violence - "Dark"

Just a few that come to mind from an old gray mare.

The new Star Trek movie is awesome... I may be partial though since I have a HUGE school girl crush on Zachary Quinto...

Gamer is also a good one. Again, though, Gerard Butler.... Mmmmmm... Lol...

Law Abiding Citizen is a great action movie. (also Gerard Butler )

For older stuff, I highly recommend: Silent Running, Stars Wars (Episodes IV, V, & VI), The Day After Tomorrow, Terminator I-III, Men In Black, A.I., Blade Runner, Mad Max (both), Outland, Soylent Green, The Andromeda Strain, and A Clockwork Orange.

I deliberately left out all the superhero stuff, as I make a distinction between true science fiction and comic book fantasy.

If you like to read, I suggest almost anything by Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, or Phillip K. D i c k

I really liked the Bourne trilogy and "The Untouchables." If you like Tarantino, have you seen "Reservoir Dogs"? "Lord of War" was fair as well.

For tv series you have to try Firefly, it was such an amazing sci-fi series. Dang FOX canceled it after not even 1 full season and it had better ratings in its first year then the X-files did.

Babylon 5 was pretty good, I think it was the first space sci-fi series with a continuing story line from episode to episode. Watch out though, it is a huge series, 5 seasons plus several 2 hour "movies".

Any of the Resident Evil movies, but the 1st was the best.

The [u]Fifth Element[/u] is one of the best sci-fi movies ever if you ask me. Great action and so so funny too. Who can forget "Are you classified as human? Ahhh, negative, I am a meat popsicle."

Big Trouble in Little China is a good action/comedy movie but I like it more for the comedy in it.

The Underworld 1 or 2 movies for action/horror. Plus Kate Beckinsdale is so bad donkey in them. All that in a corset!!

If you like campy horror you could try Evil Dead 1 or 2 or Army of Darkness . All Bruce Campbell movies who is the king of camp (and chins!!). Another funny Bruce movie is Bubba Ho-Tep.

Just a few to start, not sure what all you would like. I used to love horror movies and have a lot of them but they totally are none appealing to me anymore.

Hmmmm....Movies....

Most of what I've enjoyed recently are more in the way of chick flicks....

umm...

Haven't seen it yet, but Sherlock Holmes is supposed to be fantastic. Not exactly in the realm you're looking for, but still supposed to be lots of action and whatnot.

Avatar was amazing.

I enjoyed surrogates, but it didn't live up to the hype. Still worth a watch.

300 is a must see.

All the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

The Prestige and The Illusionist. Similar stories, both great flicks.

Stardust was great. DeNiro plays a Crossdressing pirate, it's fantastic.

If you haven't seen it, Pans Labyrinth was another great one.

The new Batman movies with Christian Bale

Speaking of Christian Bale...Equilibrium..one of my favorite movies. Didn't get a lot of coverage, as it was kind of blotted out by the Matrix, it was a similar type of film and the Matrix was still all the rage. Equilibrium was, I thought, a better film.

Kingdom of Heaven - again, not exactly what you're looking for, but lots of action.

Stardust was great. DeNiro plays a Crossdressing pirate, it's fantastic.

I think Stardust is my favorite movie ever!! From the moment I saw it in the theater I knew it was going to be a must buy! More a love story but it does have some good action sequences in it. There are several parts in it that make me cry. DeNiro is amazing in it too, but I can't think of a bad movie with him in it.

I did forget to mention Pandorum. Pretty nasty and gorry but it was a pretty interesting sci-fi story.

What a wonderful list - Bruce Dern in Silent Running was amazing as was Sean Connery in Outland.

I grew up on the 50s and 60s Cold War Paranoia films - sometimes not a lot of action but tension was what they were all about.

On The Beach - one of the best "after the bomb" films

The Thing From Another World (not the John Carpenter gory remake) - suspense and well paced dialog propelled this version not gore.

The Day The Earth Stood Still (again not the all action and special effects remake) A warning to us all about our own self destructive behavior.

On TV I used to watch a series called "Blake's Seven" from the BBC - low budget like the early Doctor Who but very interesting plot lines.

I believe that the first series "Battlestar Galactica (1978-79) predates Babylon 5 (1994 - )as the first TV sci-fi series with continuing plots, although they did conclude one plot each week while starting the next.

I loved the original Outer Limits, One Step Beyond and The Twilight Zone.

Sorry, I love Black and White.

I particularly loved when the Ferris wheel broke free and as it was rolling down the pier they showed the amateur ventriloquist and his dummy both screaming!

I watched a couple of new releases last night.

The Fourth Kind. This was amazing. VERY creepy.

The other was Ninja Assassin. Which was good... Very bloody and tons of action with an underlying subtle love story. I personally liked The Fourth Kind better but you may enjoy Ninja Assassin lots more.

If you're into the "Saw" series, I would highly recommend that "Cube" series. If you do watch them, watch "Cube Zero" last.

Aw man. I watched 28 Days Later tonight and am still jumpy as all get out. (Even though I've seen it plenty of times before. Anything with zombi-esque stuff going on squicks me out plenty. Though the older 'of the Dead' films get to me the most due to the older, washed out film look.)

So happy someone mentioned Babylon 5! Friend got me into the series by loaning me his box sets.. now I have my own. First season can be a little hokey at times but it gets better. It sucked me in and made me cry a couple of times by the end of it all.

I'm really bad with remembering movie titles if I've only managed to see things once. (My 'rents were pretty behind on this stuff too.) Also watched Braveheart tonight. I will always love that one. (Epic, battle movies are awesome. I also have a thing for dramatic movies, like Elizabeth: the Golden Years.. but I shall spare as all that list.)

I must remember this thread so I can find new movies to watch.
