Insurance Companies Just Suck

I hate my insurance company... It's not so much that they won't cover the services I need, but the fact that the only way to find out would be to out myself to the HR deparment - they are the only ones with the full listing of service covered and not covered. There is no listing on the web site even when you have an account set up. You are not provided a full listing from HR when you sign up - and to make it worse - I work in a field that is known and allowed to discriminate against trangender in employment...

GAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Insurance companies just need to burn burn burn... well at least conduct themselves in a more open and ethical manner... You are suposed to be able to have full confidentiality and privacy as it relates to health issues in my state - this practice of only giving HR the complete info kind of defeats those laws.

I feel better now - problem is not gone... I guess I will just have to figure out an excuse to inquire about it all that won't give me away...

I'm in the same boat. Don't want to ask my HR dept about anything, and they're the gatekeepers to the insurance plan. I'm going to ask my doctor to ask - they can go directly to the insurance company in a confidential manner without going through my HR. Have you tried that approach?

Hmmm,

Seems kind of strange that full-disclosure of covered services would be so hidden and only known to the HR department.

That being the case, can you simply request from the HR department a complete list of what is covered and what is not covered.

I would doubt that you would have to give a specific reason.

I would suspect that simply saying that you just wanted to know for future reference would suffice.

Just my thoughts.

Both of these are great ideas...

I received an insurance "Handbook" that explained the entire program....(and it says "No SEX CHANGE or associated stuff...)....

But...there's ways....

I agree with Brenda. I've never heard of an insurance company that will only disclose whats covered to one company's HR..... (read: contact the insurance company)

However, each insurance company's policy is different with each company that they're contracted with. There's a lot of variation, so it would have to relate directly to your company's policy.

In my case, the company that handles my insurance is nothing more than a subdivision of my own company. Conflict of interest! Makes it really hard to do anything in confidence plus I work for a hospital, where everything can be justified for medical reasons. We treat patient's privacy like it's gold, but that doesn't extend to employees.

Oh well, I'll be outed someday - just have to be prepared for that eventuality.

Love, Kat

For me I just asked my HR for the "complete" guidebook which by law they HAVE to give you. They usually only hand out an overview or summery during the open enrollment process. The complete guide spells out specifically what is NOT covered. In MY book it specifically points out "Services, Labs, and procedures related to changing one's sex". There it is in black and white. What I did initially was to call the insurance company and "act" as a new hire and ask if transgender services were covered. They told me that the sex change stuff is not included...to use thier words. Being anonymous I then asked if they offered services for suicide prevention which they did. I then pushed further and said that it was either the transgender assistance or suicide and she went back to "sir we don't cover sex change services". Big brick wall and in all honesty, I coulc have gone around with them all day but it was pointless. In they end she asked for my name, I said I wouldn't give it and she said without my name she couldn't talk to me anymore and hung up.....I love my insurance company too. Just so you all know if you work in PA. Geisinger insurance will in no way cover ANY services for "sex change" reasons. I will be changing to blue cross/Blue shield as at LEAST the hormones are covered and the Labs too depending on how the Dr bills them. Thats what I have learned.....

Really! I have BC/BS. Could you please post the details on how the labs and hormones can be cover by BC/BS in the way the doctor bills them.

Only thing I can tell you on this is that my Hormone Doc told me that the way he bills it out it has been covered. This is also to an extent dependant on your own individual policy. Some company's specifically exclude certain things. As a general rule though, from what the doc said the BC/BS can be covered unless your company excludes it. My current insurance excluded ANY "sex change" medical expenses. I would check your exclusions in yoru policy's manuel. It will be all the way in the back in VERY small print.

Awh man Bobby. :/ I feel you.

I'm kind of going through the backdoor of my insurance. Seeing a psychiatrist that's on my plan later this month for my anxiety. I'm gonna ask him if he knows of any therapists that are on my plan that can see me, and through a therapist.. hopefully find a gender identity therapist. Maybe try that way? Just say you need to see a therapist? While my insurance probably will never cover T or top surgery. I should be able to find a therapist.

I hope you do too.

And.. heh, another Marylander. :)

Good morning    We drove about2 ½ hours to go to a different church’s service.  It was very different, but very much the same.  I went there to meet the minister that will be standing with our minister.  As soon as she saw me she treated me by names and gave me a big hug.  A lot more music and fire and brimstone, but still the same church traditions we had since I was a child.  It is a larger congregation than ours.  But still very homey and friendly..  we were welcomed by all.   Busy week! My son and DIL are coming tomorrow.  I haven’t seen them in quite a while.   but now, I have to go to work.     Willow

Emotional courage is the willingness to feel and act on your emotions, even when you're afraid of the outcome. It's about following your heart and intuition, and aligning with your values, instead of choosing what's most convenient or comfortable. Emotional courage can help you: Take action on what you care about, Expand your emotional agility, Make values-based decisions, and Be productive and feel fulfilled.

1983 - Jim Gordon US session drummer Jim Gordon murdered his mother during a psychotic episode. Diagnosed schizophrenic during his 1984 trial, Gordon was sentenced to 16 years-to-life in prison. A Grammy Award winner for co-writing Layla with Eric Clapton, Gordon worked with The Beach Boys, John Lennon, George Harrison Frank Zappa and many other artists..  Jim Gordan also was in Traffic and Derek and The Dominoes and received writers credit for the piano part in "Layla".    1967 - The Doors The Doors 'Light My Fire' was released in the US, where it went on to be No.1 on the singles chart two months later. When The Doors were booked to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show they were asked to change the line "girl, we couldn't get much higher", as the sponsors were uncomfortable with the possible reference to drug-taking. The band agreed to do so, and did a rehearsal using the amended lyrics; however, during the live performance, lead singer Jim Morrison sang the original lyric, after which they were informed they would never appear on the Ed Sullivan show again. I remember being in my mother's yard doing lawn work when I first heard the song when it was first released.   1964 - Ringo Starr During a photo session Ringo Starr was taken ill suffering from tonsillitis and pharyngitis, days before a world tour was about to start. After a last-minute phone call from George Martin, session drummer Jimmy Nichol rushed over to EMI Studios, where he and The Beatles ran through six songs from their tour repertoire in a quick rehearsal. Nichol replaced Ringo and became a Beatle for eleven days. This didn't get much press so I didn't know about it then but learned about it as I researched the group when I played Paul McCartney in a tribute band in my old life. I am much happy now though I miss playing out with a full electric band.

Last I heard, trans men were actually at higher risk of violent assault than trans women, though it was more commonly intimate partner violence. Trans women, on the other hand, were murdered at a higher rate. Unfortunately I can’t find that source atm, but the following source states that, while trans people are four times more likely than cis people to be victims of violent crime, the difference in rates of violence against trans men and trans women is negligible. Actually, looking at the stats cited, trans men are slightly more likely to experience violent crime.    That said, it’s not a competition. We all have it hard in some ways, just not always in the same ways.   https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/press/ncvs-trans-press-release/

Yep - its a tactic to divide peoples opinions and get people concentrating on issues other than the one that the current government are responsible for. Thing is, we represent 0.01% of the population, so there are really focussing on a non-issue. Its like saying Jimmy Saville, the white middle aged TV presenter was bad, so we need to ban all white middle aged men from TV. Its ridiculous.   Thankfully, the huge majority of the UK public also see these things as non-issues so and with the election coming up, hopefully nothing will change.

They are trying to vote catch in any way they can at the moment. Their views on bringin back in national service are so much of a joke although propaganda will do doubt hook them a few. I suspect the armed forces are cringing. No doubt, in the US, you have a number of similar things going on.   Tracy

https://www.theguardian.com/society/article/2024/jun/02/tories-will-allow-bars-on-trans-women-says-kemi-badenoch?CMP=share_btn_url   The conservatives in the U.K. have adopted the American GOP playbook and are intending to ban trans folk, in particular trans women, from the public square.  Erasure is a stated goal of theirs now.  It is a sad thing to see.   Carolyn Marie

Interesting.  But.... doesn't going through this court case fix the reputation aspect by itself?  I mean, all they have to do is print off a copy of the news story/court proceedings.  "Hey look, a judge and jury said it wasn't true."  And since there's no criminal history, it doesn't affect a background check.    As for not getting "any" work...really?  I've known some extremely squirrelly people to get good jobs, including actual molesters/abusers with real history that can be found on a background check.  How possible is it to prove a negative statement such as "I can't get any work" in court?     Perhaps if this person lives in a small town where nobody knows they do drag-queen stuff on the side, being outed could cause issues.  But is that a factor that was considered in this case?  And isn't being outed if you've got a "secret drag queen life" a risk that simply goes along with that activity?  I would be interested to see the  proof of loss the jury received.  Is that usually a public document, or sealed?
