Saxophone; I used to play cornet so I'm attached to brass instruments.

I'd pick saxophone.

I played trombone back in junior high and high school. After I quit trombone in 10th grade, I'd occasionally get dragged into playing other brass instruments (trumpet and baritone mostly) for the local youth symphony and a few paying gigs, but I was never as good on them as on trombone.

I play saxophone (alto and tenor). The reason I learnt it was because I agreed to teach a friend to play trumpet if he taught me to play saxophone. I think if I would have preferred to learn clarinet first, in retrospect, but I like playing saxophone.

There are a few things to consider that come to my mind:

What kind of music would you like to be playing? If you prefer classical, then clarinet would be a better choice. If you prefer jazz (or types of music related to jazz like funk, soul, r&b, etc.), then saxophone may be a better choice.

If you learn to play clarinet, it is then very easy to pick up saxophone once you know clarinet. Saxophone fingerings are the same as clarinet about the break. It is not very easy to go from saxophone to clarinet.

Depending on the kind of saxophone you're playing (and how much you care about using quality reeds), clarinet reeds can be more expensive than saxophone reeds.

It is easier to carry a clarinet.

It's cheaper to buy a clarinet than a saxophone if you're just starting to learn an instrument.

As Pól says, you can go on to a saxophone if you become adept at the clarinet. I love the sound of both, if played well; though I only ever tried to play the clarinet.

It would be more a hobby for me, well if I ever got good enough I thought I could take it further I probably would consider it.

Clarinet is the harder instrument to learn - open holes to cover - flutes are available in either configuration.

More people will listen to a saxophone - clarinet has to be played very well before people will stop trying to get them to quit.

Saxophone.

I play both alto and Clarinet. It is so much better. Better sound. Better to listen to. Plain cooler. Much easier to learn.

I also play bass clarinet and bassoon, and as much better than regular clarinet as the bass is, I still think I'd rather play sax.

Besides, it's easier to switch to flute and oboe from sax than it is from clarinet, and I even like flute more anyway. I guess it's just the quality of the sound that wins me over though.
