How do you guys deal with Tom? This is a question for pre-T guys  Or how did you guys on T deal with it before you got T?

I don't get how anyone can go through this...

When my doctor calls I am telling her that I want Depo and that I want her to call Wal-Mart and call the prescription in because I can't do this... I am sick of having to deal with this... I got a 2 month free card after 5 months of hell and now it's back and I am going berserk... I took tylenol... AFTER I said that I was never taking any pain pills again <_< It hurts so bad! :( GAH!!! <_<

Sorry had to vent...

Tom is "that time of the month." I think I remember girls in middle school calling it Tom... or maybe Bob...

And I don't think "Tylenol" is much of a pain pill. I've taken stuff much stronger than that... like the pills I was given for my wisdom tooth surgery, they were very helpful, both from the dry socket I got AND Tom.

LOl! That's one of the things I love about this site - always something new to learn.

But, uh...Bob?

Not sure I want to know where that came from.

One....Geo glad to see you figured out a way to get on here without your computer

Two...I thought Bob stood for Battery Operated Boyfriend....Never heard Aunt Flo referred to as Bob or Tom before, but I do agree whatever you want to call it is a winch!

You you take Aleve or Advil for the pain? If your pain is really that bad that OTC's don't help then as much as you don't want to seeing your doc might be a good thing as there should be a reason for pain that bad.

I was actually just pondering this topic today. Wondering if you guys used pads or tampons. Seems like both would create dysphoric issues for you guys.

Yep they both do  I've kinda numbed myself form it, like, I became so dysphoric that I just don't care anymore, if that makes sense.

Have you tried the extra strength Tylenol? Advil never did ANYTHING for me, but I've also been out of the stronger painkillers the past two months, so I tried extra strength Tylenol, two pills. It... actually worked okay. Which I didn't expect. Maybe it's because it's one of the few times in my life I've ever taken Tylenol (at least when it wasn't part of another pain pill) so maybe I'm not immune, or because it's just a different type of pain reliever than advil. Also, Aleve did NOTHING for me either. And I've never tried regular Tylenol that I can remember. So, Advil- nothing, Advil-nothing, Extra-strength Tylenol-okay.

LOL! Yeah never heard it called that either :P

I have to tell her about it. She has yet to call me back.

They both do. I used both... And well they are both issues for me.. :(

I took Tylenol 8 hour at standard dosage but 2 pills. It did nothing. 2 hours later it's going away on it's own slowly...

Ah, that sucks. The only other thing I can recommend are distractions. I find spending time on the computer or playing video games help. Sometimes even physical activity, if it's not TOO bad, like only at 50% pain level (like when I was taking Tylenol). Because sometimes I can almost ignore it sort of... or at least it's better than rolling around on the floor, which for some reason is always the first thing I want to do if I have cramps. It's very odd.

That 8 hour is 650mg Acetaminophen, the extra strength is 500mg. So I guess you're already doing the best you can with that.

Um... I also heard drinking less caffeine helps... but I can never make myself NOT drink caffeine.

Also... heating pads. I used to use my mom's all the time. The kind that smells like lavender and you but it in the microwave to heat it up. But I don't own one of my own, so I have used one in a year-ish.

And in answer to the other question, I use that cotton attached to the string to stop the bleeding. Think of it like... first aid... got to stop your injury from bleeding all over the place... yeah? Even if it keeps reopening every month. :banghead:

ARGH it seems we all suffer together.

I do busy work for a week and preoccupy my mind.

And why does it have to be blood?

Why can't it be.... water?

Yeah, at least that wouldn't stain. =( I get so paranoid about staining my sheets I wrap a towel around my waist before I go to bed. Not to mention all the accidents I've had that have gotten it showing through my pants... that's the worst... I was so lucky several times that I had been wearing a sweater that I could tie around my waist.

I called my doctor and I am going to go on Depo tomorrow. My mum and her bf will pick up the prescription and then I'll call the doctor's office and go in. :) YAY! <_<

Putting hydrogen peroxide on the clothes or sheets before you wash them will take the blood right out and not leave a stain.

I don't use either pads of tampons. I'm so ashamed and Dysphoric I've hidden it completely from my family. I've found a solution using toilet paper. Sometimes paper towels. It's not the most efficient, but it works enough. The hard part was finding the right way to do it. The 1st thing I tried involved Duct tape. I still can't do much as far as leaving my apartment during that week. It's ruined my life.

I used toilet paper for a about a year before my mom discovered I had actually started having my period. I... am glad I don't do that anymore. I just had to use so much for what it did, and no matter how I arranged it I'd usually managed to mess up my underwear, which is how my mom eventually found out, as I hid the pairs of underwear under my mattress. =( I still won't go buy tampons though, even after almost a year away from home going college and many years of "Tom." I keep making my mom buy them for me...

And I thought I was the only adult that still made the parental units buy the 'supplies', pre-T that is. I had to tell my parents because mine was so relentlessly heavy that even with a tampon and a pad, I'd have stains on the back of my pants every time. I had cramps so bad that I'd feel like I'd rather have had the flu. Bedridden for eight days, rolling in pain, going through six sets of sheets... good grief I'm glad I don't have that anymore.

There was a time when I didn't have to deal with this. My periods stopped either because of an eating disorder I had, or because I started having epileptic seizures. All the doctors were rude and were screaming at me for some reason... You can probably tell that I never went back there. THOSE PEOPLE ARE CRAZY. <_<

But those 6 months without leaving stains all over the place were... Pretty nice.

Mae, you are so sweet for making this comment.   Desert Fox, you are so right.  I always knew that even though I was part-time, my motivation was way more complicated than a simple desire to wear women's clothes.   Your question is a timely one because in my next post, I am going to talk about how compartmentalized my life is, and the short answer is yes.  I have friends who only know Sally, friends who only my male persona, and a rare few that know both.

@EasyE With my background in Behavioral Sciences I do go to actual conferences for the medical and psychological professionals that deal with Trans Youth, and in those conferences, the ethics of "too fast" versus "too slow and restrictive" are a heavy concern.  There is very thoughtful sharing among the participants for making professional judgments that the therapist is comfortable with without being afraid of what is "too soon" or "not soon enough" to advance to medical prescription therapies. The ethics of what constitute reasonable caution or unreasonable delay are deeply at play in those situations, with the idea to prevent harm while alleviating the patient's stress and other issues.  This type of conference fulfills Continuing Education license requirements that most states and other areas have.  From them the therapist may seem to "speed up" their evaluation process, but it is based on the accumulated experience of colleagues, just as is true in other professions and yes, even trades.

That's wonderful news!! I took our pup in for her Vet check today - perfect. She slept 7 hours last evening and is coming along really well with her house breaking and crate training.   I know you'll have some excitement with a new Boxer!!

Surgeries are drastic, and indeed should be a last resort for minors.  As indeed they are.  It is very rare for anyone under 18 to get gender-affirming surgery.  It is typically only done if the person would be suicidal without it.   Puberty blockers are a way to avoid the "drastic measure" of forcing the person to undergo the wrong puberty.  They should not be prescribed lightly, and I don't think they are.  They are a way to go slow until the person can truly make an informed decision.

My Endo keeps track of several trace chemicals in my blood system that can be affected by our slightly different hormone balance, keeping in mind we have had both hormones all our life, just in different balance.  I did have to change one diuretic I was taking that was crashing out one chemical that does affect energy levels, and it turned out that Spiro was the alternative to that one for the way it works there.  I was never on Spiro for the hormone issues per se.  Let your doctor know about the fatigue sometime today or whenever you read this.

Hmmm .  .  . if I only had a ten-word description that completely described my identity. That would be great, but one doesn't exist. "I'm a girl—and a boy. And neither—and both?" There. Now you know, right? Maybe not. —Davie

I think you should discuss it with your doctor.  I know you are 'asking around' but experience probably varies.

I completely relate to this.  My partner of 5 years has made it clear she won't be going with me if I go down this path. I feel like I wasted her time with my own fear and procrastination.  I visit my elderly parents (my mother has dementia) and my first thought is there's no way I can put them through this. I think the same thing when I see my adult daughters.     Nobody is holding us hostage but us.

I do get this, really.  However this is part of the reasoning behind the blockers.  Without them there will be "irreversible" changes, only not the ones wanted. No, I don't think this should be done lightly, but I have a problem with forbidding it by law in all cases.
