Bad Storms In Ohio Yesterday

Well, we had some really bad storms move through my part of the world (Ohio) yesterday...

It knocked out the power over a wide area...

It's still out at home today...

I got up today and had to shave what's left of my face (under the chin) in cold water by candle light! DANG!

I have a generator, but, we keep waiting for the power to come back...

I have a freezer full of food that I can't let thaw! GAHHHHHHH!

Every time I walk into a room, I flip a light switch even though I know there's no power...

Creatures of habit, I guess!

A few hours without power always cures any nostalgia for the good old days!

And I always worry that the power will come on in the middle of the night and I have turned on a faucet before remembering the power is off and failed to turn it off again.

Last summer lightening hit a power station for this part of the county. Power was out for 5 days. We lost everything that wasn't canned since we had sold the generator because we hadn't used it. None of the stores in town had their generators in working order because it was summer. No gas for many miles-or for any of the generators, or ice and the grocery store lost all the food except shelf food.It was an experience. Did I mention we live in an all electric house? Luckily we had propane for the grill and a cold lake to at least cool off and feel a little cleaner.

I hope all is back on when you get home! I can never figure out why camping in a tent is fun and camping in your own home is a misery!

I am sorry about the power outage and yes we all flip those switches even with the power out - you are normal (whatever that means).

I remember growing up in the 1950's and a power outage (in the Chicago suburbs) was so far out of our understanding that it was like a special event. I can only remember 2-3 times - at most!) in the 20 years I lived there growing up.

Well, I'm about a 1/4 mile east of a town on a gravel road. And power outages are almost a weekly occurance now. I watched some PBS/Discovery/TLC program the other day that highlighted another Chicago suburb where they have about 200 outages a year. Basically the story is that the infrastructure for our (U.S) national power grid is getting old, and overused. And to expect more in the near future.

The last major storm knocked out power for about 36 hours and I had an automotive engineer come over and help me figure out getting the generator going - it needs to be started about twice a month, I'm lazy!). I also have a small power inverter that can run off the car (better when the car is running) and that will provide a light or two, maybe a small appliance (small TV). For under $100 it gives you at least a smidgen of civilization. If you're a coffee drinker you need at least 1000 watt generator or inverter to get Mr. Coffee running.

Dee Jay, as often as this happens in your neck of the woods (and I do mean woods), and since

you have a stream running nearby, may I make a suggestion?

You could ask those nice Amish boys with whom you so shamelessly flirted with a few months back,

to come around and build you a nice water powered generator. Probably wouldn't cost but half

a mil, and you could make it up in lower electric bills in what, 100 years or so!

Well, maybe not. At least you're safe, unless you took off what's left of your chin with that

razor blade.

I got a charge out of some of those electrifying answers. When you get a chance to volt in the next election, generate some support, suggest an emergency community plan, some way to get amp-le power to your olm. Watt do you have to lose? POWER TO THE PEOPLE!

The giant crab that's part of a baptist church is the wiedest thing to me.

In that article that is-in deference to your sweet sensibilities I chose an article that didn't expose ALL of Ohio's eccentricities.

The one that mentioned a woman near the Y bridge who puts on a periodic show-like jumping off tractors and stripping while screaming about grasshoppers just seemed to hot too close to home

And I found out that their claim to the shortest street in the world isn't true-it's really in Scotland according to Guinness. Which means that the Wrold's Shortest Street parade and celebration I've been attending in Hot Springs every year is questionable. But they base their claim on Ripleys. *Sigh* Is nothing to be believed? Well, in Hot Springs? No
