I know the best way for a guy to get cut and muscled is to have lots of protein in his diet, but being vegan, I don't really know what kinds of protein to eat in order to build up muscle. The protein shakes are great but they do get old :P Any suggestions?

I'm only vegetarian, but I found this link that might be useful for you: http://www.peta.org/mc/factsheet_display.asp?ID=105. It compares the protein percentages in lots of vegan-suitable foods. I'm not sure if different proteins are better suited for the job though, sorry! Hope the link gives you some useful info. :)

Thanks man, I see some good foodstuffs on there :) May I ask what you do to maintain the body you want, being a vegetarian?

So am I. :)

I just eat a lot of tofu and soy products. I love tofu so it doesn't really get that old for me. Also, protein shakes, carnation instant breakfast (with soy milk), and power bars are yummy.

well im a vegetarian right now but boca has specific vegan stuff with good amounts of protein and if you live near a trader joe's they sell a lot of really good vegan protein foods too. and tofu...you can't go wrong with tofu!

Well, 'you can't go wrong with tofu', is not exactly right. Tofu was not a mainstay in Eastern diets, it's always been more of a supplement or even condiment. (I've always wondered why if tofu was so absolutely good for one that rice has been the prime ingredient of Eastern diets for centuries, why rice and not tofu?) Now that people who are eating it in much higher quantities are being studied, longer term effects are starting to come out and researchers seem to be seeing some possibly disturbing trends.

I would say like practically everything else, take any food in moderation, eat a balanced a diet as you can, and don't focus just on one source.

Oh, I'm not much of a help on vegan diets, tho I have cut down my meat intake significantly over the past years, following the advice I gave above. Just finished a tangerine, great taste but way too many seeds (like 3 per section, yuk).

Hugs,

Chloë

I know this thread is kind of old, but as a fellow vegan Ft* who is pretty into nutrition, I feel like bumping it anyway. PCRM has some pretty good nutrition information:

http://pcrm.org/health/veginfo/protein.html (There's a chart with different foods and their protein content if you scroll to the bottom)

And apparently VRG has an even longer list:

http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/protein.htm

I tend to eat a lot of tofu, beans, and nuts, as well as mock meats (though not too too often because they tend to be pretty high in sodium). I am also a pretty big fan of the chocolate soy protein powder that whole foods sells; there's even a recipe on the box for an awesome post-workout drink that tastes just like I remember chocolate milkshakes.

Also, Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness has been helpful to me in the past. The forum is pretty good:

Yep, tofu is very good.

I am a part-time vegetarian. Meaning, I prefer vegetarian food but from time to time I feel my body runs out of

fuel in a certain way. It's hard to describe it. But I feel when it's time to like stock up. I would have some ham, corned beef or

chicken then and I am good to go for a while without again.

Soy beans, corn, nuts (especially walnuts) and rice are favorites of mine, too. Those contain good stuff.

LOL.. nice to know I'm not the only one on there (although I haven't posted in a while being the admin and life being busy).

I haven't tried Whole Foods Soy Protein powder but have been trying some of the Vega products. (I've been trying to transition to raw vegan for a few months now -- very slow going).

Oh no way! Haha that's awesome, the internet is a small place. I used to post on there quite a bit over the summer, but I haven't in a while.

I've heard really good things about Vega stuff, but I think the one thing I tried (it was some kind of like vitamin powder you put in water, I think) was kind of gross, so I haven't tried anything else.

They've actually come out with a new blend that just requires water and a shake in a cup (no blender needed). Mixes better and tastes better. I got it for the times I'm on the road and have trouble finding something to eat.

That said, I generally don't do well with powders and find the taste/texture too much for me. Lately, however, I have been making "green smoothies". Basically, it's chard, baby spinach, mango, strawberries, apples, bananas and water with a splash of lemon juice. I supplement my protein with nuts (almonds, peanuts, sunflower seeds, etc.) I also sometimes add in ground flax seeds for some Omega 3 boosting.

Oh love yeah! I'll have to check that out. There is little I find more annoying than having to wash my blender.

That green smoothie sounds awesome. It also makes mine sound really boring, haha. Maybe I should get a little more adventurous with my smoothie making.

I LOVE chard and baby spinach, but blended into a drink? I'll have to try that!

Are crawfish considered vegetarian? They really don't have a face, just eyestalks and a bunch of creepy mouth parts.

Just asking

Generally speaking, no. That would fall under the category of Flexitarian or Pesciterian (eats veggies and fish -- no chicken, beef, pork, etc.)

As long as it has sentience (that is, knows it exists in some fashion or manner), then it's generally not acceptable. (although this can open a huge debate as to definitions of vegetarian, vegan, etc.).

My view is that whatever works for you and what you feel comfortable with is what you should do.

One thing to make sure is that you add fruit to it. Makes the drink sweet and very palatable. I think it also offsets some of the effects of kale (I've had kale and didn't chew properly and it made me sick).

So I know this thread isn't about protein shakes, BUT I feel the need to plug this new soy protein I got. I ran out of the kind I had (Whole Foods brand) and went to GNC to get more (really just because it's closer to Whole Foods). I ended up getting this huge thing of GNC-brand soy protein, because it's cheaper in bulk of course, and it's awesome! It has more protein than the Whole Foods kind I had been using, and I think it tastes better, too. Sorry to be a commercial right now, but I am so into this stuff that I had to tell someone. This nuts rules, I highly recommend it.

You should try to find some sites that talk about vegan body builders or stuff like that. I found a site but there were pics not appropriate to link to :poster_oops: . Fortunately the wonderful and beautiful mods caught it and saved me real embarrassment :ThanxSmiley: .

Well jeez. I am a vegetarian and I kinda have the same problem. I eat lentals or lentels or how ever you spell it, lol even though I hate them, and I also eat hard boiled eggs for breakfast, but you can't eat those so uh, peanut butter, and nuts, and I eat a lot of fake meat, like chicken patties and stuff which has protein. Also maybe google vegan protein shakes, I am sure you can find some :P

I asked AI to create an image of myself 30 years younger based off my avatar on another site and this was the result:     Wow! I am amazed how close it got my 30 year old face!

Quite true.  The amusing thing about opposites is how similar they can be.   My family left Greece because of the conflict between the communists and the militarists/fascists.

This wouldn't even be a problem if they would just leave us alone.  It is a no-brainer.

OMG.  I'm glad it wasn't worse, and you were able to get on it quickly.  Lots of blood can be scary.

Like I said, I'm no tankie, but I do see a world of difference between Joseph Stalin and Bernie Sanders.   If the point is not wanting 'government control' the Right is pretty good at that themselves - as they've been demonstrating lately. This stuff gets complicated.

So, I am curious. Is the Governor going to mandate vaginal or penile recognition photos before one enters the restroom? Considering the Governor has no balls to do the right thing, will he have to pee against a tree outside? Inquiring minds would like to know. I love it when the job recruiters contact me about the wonderful jobs available in Oklahoma. It is so much fun telling them there is no way I will ever go to Oklahoma. When there are no workers, then they can shutter the place.

Thank you! I'm out of coffee so I have been drinking hot tea instead. Looking forward to the 1st. It's crazy that we are almost in May. This year has flown by really quick! Good to hear that y'all got to sleep in. Hope you have a good weekend too!
    • Ashley0616
It's nice to care about others but you need to live your life as you please. No one be your only source of happiness. Love yourself and don't look back. I lost over 40 family members it hurts but apparently, they didn't truly love me. True love will always be there through the thick and thin. I can honestly say that HRT has made me think in ways that I never thought I would. I get myself some shoes or clothes every month because retail therapy not only helps but it is a reward to myself to show love. I have over 100 dresses. I have a whole walk-in-closet full of clothes and 67 pairs of shoes. I love who I am. I was born in 84 so not all people in the 80's think that way. As far as the name just take your time and be happy with it. I knew I loved the name Ashley. Take care and welcome!

WOW @Ashley0616 it’s good that you have skills to treat traumatic injuries, as well as the ability to remain calm while managing others needs to get yourself and the boys ready to go to the hospital. Proud mama bear skills. I’m glad that he’s doing well.    Meanwhile back at the ranch, we slept in and I’m just now finishing my 3rd cup of coffee.    Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Well yesterday was not fun. I was getting ready to make dinner and I hear screaming and crying. I look over and my son put his foot through glass. He gashed near his Achilles tendon. Thankfully that is intact. I didn't freeze for a second. All of my military training came into play. I doctored him up and got Jett ready and myself and we headed to the ER. He is doing ok today. He says he is in pain but doesn't need Tylenol. He is a tough cookie!

Hi,   It's seems today is my trans birthday.  I'm beyond excited. Just picked up my testogel from the pharmacy. Although I naturally have doubts as I'm sure do we all, they are rapidly disappearing. Yesterday I was so nervous I kept claiming I'm not trans, despite grinning like a fool knowing I can pick up my prescription the next day. I'm shaking and on the verge of happy tears. I will put on my first sachet this eve. Thanks so much to this forum and kind words from people. This is the first forum I found when I began seriously questioning.
