Your Name-What Do You Care To Be Called?

I'm fine with almost anything, as long as it isn't a male name. I think the main ones I am most often referred to is Janessa, Jan, and my nickname - almost no-one even knows my male name. <3

While I enjoy the sound of Virginia and those who know me IRL call me that, I am cool with Gin. Funny thing. My long time friend and best man in all things has always used a shorted version of my birth name even though I prefer the longer and it is phonetically similar to Gin. He asked me what to call me now and, to make it easy for him, I said Gin will do nicely. The wife calls me Ginny from time to time as a tease, but I love Harry Potter, so I guess I'm okay with that, too. Just don't call me to collect a debt, because I'm plumb broke :D

'Shane' sounds almost like 'Shame'. I do not know if that is such a good thing...

But Shane's a nice name..

I like Sean too, possibly better now, but it reminds me of the hip-hop kid.

Hmmm, I see your point.

Then again, perhaps it just is not my place to, ehm, analyze, people's names...

And no, I'm not really fond of that Sean, too. I hate hip-hop...

I realize it may sound a bit formal or even pretentious but I prefer Miss Ricka.

It's actually a Southern thing. My mother is Southern and I very much identify

with the Southern women in my family. Ricka derives from Richard and I was

originally named that after my father.

I actually like that too. My screen name, when simply Shilo is not available, is always Miss Shilo.

The real life name I would like to be called, whenever it becomes a possibility, is Diana. It's sorta similar to my given name, so it won't be that hard for people to get used to, plus there are a few references that I sorta relate to, like the Roman Goddess, and though I'm slightly embarrassed to admit it, the one female incarnation of Garfield the cat in his 9 Lives cartoon special. A bit of nostalgia with an obvious connection for trans people, plus I'm a die hard cat person (you should see the tattoo I'm getting! I can't post the picture but it's going to be Bastet, the egyptian cat goddess running up my side from my waist to chest level, with the wing spreading over my back up to my shoulder. It's breathtaking. If you wanna see it and you're over 18, let me know and I'll pass you a link)

My ex started calling me P for Paula and lots of other people heard it and started calling me P too.

I prefer Jace. It sounds a bit like my birth name so it was easier for me to choose, so the people I know before I transition won't have an excuse to forget it. I don't really mind what anyone calls me though, just as long as it's not something derogatory. Or my birth name. I can't forgive that. :P

I don't care what ya call me just don't call me late for dinner! (Oh, I -had- to.)

Ever since I was little, I've just never been keen on my given name and have had various other names over the years. I'm not sure if I've settled on my new name just yet but I suppose I'm in a state of trying one on. But the one name that bugs the butt filling out of me is being addressed by the given name. Its not a horrific name, but it is most certainly female, without any way to make it less so. (And it seems my mother only ever called me by name whenever something was wrong so it rubs me wrong in all manner of ways.)

Most just call me dumb S. Normally I find it endearing I kept the J in my first name for initialing as I always have. Jenn is easy to remember as well. I'm sure Ill be keeping,it's definitely grown on me as other things do. Jennifer Normal

Jennifer being my first name, any variant of that is ok. Jen, Jenni, Jennifer, etc.

RachaelAnn is one name. My middle name. Rachael is fine, but not Ann.

So there's my feelings on my name.

Nothing like writing out an abbreviation to a name.

Personally I don't care what I'm called as long as there is respect and caring behind it. ;)

Ohh yea, don't call me "Late for dinner", I hate that.

Even if the initiative failed, and even if the Democrats take a sweep of the House, Senate, and Presidency, I think we are still going to face many years of backlash. We need to figure out how to win over the hearts and minds of everyday people. We know that we will always exist. The incidence of being transgender is not going to wither away, but getting the attitudes to change after so much polarization will be hard. There are people out there that hate our very existence. While we push for acceptance, there will continue to be points that are unpalatable to the public.    If we take an adversarial approach to our acceptance, I am afraid it will cause further derision. The public at large needs to see us being more like they are, and see us successful, rather than being portrayed in a negative light. Even if we survive the political upheaval of this year, I suspect we will see more of the same when the election in 2028 occurs. If it is not more Trump, it will be his sycophantic disciples. We should be prepared for the long haul.

It would be fitting if he took a dip in the ocean while he is up there in Massachusetts and the great white eats him. Maybe it is just me, but tell me again how this guy is supposed to be a great actor?? I just do not get that vibe. It is mind of matter. It is my mind and he doesn't matter.

Slide rules ruled. Wow, that takes me back to the 70s. We actually had to solve problems with longhand in some situations. No calculators where I was. They were just beginning to emerge. My dad had a simple calculator that could add, subtract, multiply, and divide. That was state of the art for the time. Reading was actually required to get through school. There were no PCs, no YouTube, no Google. VHF antennas ruled. Few folks had cable. I would take that all over again.

Welcome @Arushi!  My opinion is there is no right/wrong about this.  You know, it's natural for people to perceive you differently and act differently if you present differently than you normally do.  My Zen meditation background makes it easy for me to just do my own thing, but you know, if you go out in public you also have to deal with other people and their thing.  That reminds me of the stoic books I've been reading the last few years that talk about being in a "forum".  So this is a virtual forum here and being here was a step in bringing my transgender side out into the public.   Hugs, Lydia

@Arushi - Actually, to put it more simply, a friend of mine had a phrase that became very important to me.    How can it be wrong when it feels so right?
    • Timi
Thank you for sharing, @Arushi. I'm hearing how in your element you feel when dressed as a woman. I think that the feelings you have are the best answer to your questions.    In my journey, I'm finding that once I started opening up to myself and to other people, things started to change within me, sometimes unpredictably. Some of the best advice that I have received is to be gentle to myself.    I am glad you found this group and I hope you find support and community here.    -Timi

"We have no knowledge of who the hell we are, and if we don't get it back soon we're all going to die," Dreyfuss said in a video captured at the event.   Richard Dreyfuss's comments on women and LGBTQIA+ community at Jaws event prompts cinema to apologise - ABC News   His shrill comments have exposed him as someone who has lost the plot.

You are so welcome Charlize. I think it is too late for that hope, though. On release of the Cass review the New York Times called Hilary Cass "the hero we need in these times". I hate to think what the right is going to do with this, and I know it has already been referred to by those justifying bans on gender-affirming care in the US.
    • Timi
Oh wow! Congratulations to you too, @Mirrabooka!
