Do You Fit Gender Roles?

If that's masculine, then I suck at being masculine.

My class wants to go on a fishing trip, and I'm so not going. You're not going to get me to fish. I don't kill things; It isn't my thing.

Agreed. Fellow coworker got mad cause I wont kill the bugs in our store but instead carry them outside the door. He thinks its weird but who am I to kill something just because its numerous and annoying? Could say the same of people :x

Surely the existance of transgenders in the first place shows that gender roles are nothing but outdated trash dreamt up at the zenith of the male-dominated era?

I mean, I'm MTF but I don't act completely effeminate, I'm a video gamer, the subjects I do well in at school are predominately male (Physics, Maths, Government and Politics), I'm a sucker for a good cup of tea and a read of the newspaper...

Yet I also do embroidery, cook and bake a lot, grow my hair long and effeminate, love flowers, abhorr football... What is a gender role? Just a group of stereotypes.

Do You Fit Gender Roles?

Pretty much .... yes.

Traditional 1950's roles, no, but modern women yup.

Hey, it's ME and I love it. I didn't "transition" to be somebody else!

I like,

Homemaking, cooking, sewing, gardening, shopping for beautiful cloths.

Camping, hiking, motorcycles, fishing.

There were some very interesting responses in this thread I enjoyed reading them.

Just be yourself, gender roles are vestiges of the past.

I've been trying not to focus so much on what society deems "masculine" or "feminine". It's junk.

I just do me. I hardly ever pass because of this, no one thinks "man" when you wear a pink wig, but I just deal with it.

My HRT doctor asked me "So, when did you feel like you were more masculine as opposed to feminine?" and it actually irked me, because I have never thought of myself as "masculine", just a man. Is that what defines me? How masculine I feel? I probably just took it the wrong way, but it still irked me at the time.

I don't feel "masculinity" or "femininity" really have anything to do with ones gender identity.

There really is no point in escaping from one constricting box of roles to then cram yourself into another.

The point is to be truly yourself. Find and do things that fit you.

To be honest, no. I don't fit either one perfectly xD; But then again, a bio male doesn't necessarily have to fit his gender role, and a bio female doesn't necessarily have to fit her gender role either.

I'm a little of both. I guess as a ftm, I got some of each. I like to watch sports, read books, argue, shout, be lazy, and...well, I'm more 'masculine' than 'feminine'. More stereotypically masculine, that is. But I still have emotions and I don't go lobbying around in the woods with a lumber axe.

Someone else posted that they didn't transition to be another person, they transitioned to be them.

I think that's an important thing to keep in mind :)

Whether ftm or mtf or in between (cd, androgynous, etc.) you're you and regardless of what gender you identify with, you don't need to force and bend yourself.

LOLRANT.

I actually find being more tomboyish HELPS me pass, and I think it's becuase mos people don't believe there's such a thing as a tomboyish transwoman or an effeminate transman. When I wear a skirt or dress, I get read more often than jeans and a tank top. People see me in that and think "well if she were trans, she'd dress more femanine."

Either way, I'm more comfortable in the girl-next-door comfy look than all dolled up, but that's just me.

Yes, looking way too feminime with a pink dress on or wearing skirts all the time is kind of rediculous for someone to do that is trying to pass. It's much better to wear stuff like:cheenos, shorts, jeans, maybe a blouse or T-shirt, also reasonable shoes. You can dress up sometimes, but do it within reason.

Honestly i do not know if i fit any sort of role. I can be feminine or masculine as i deem proper or necessary.

I love cooking, playing piano, shopping for clothes sometimes, reading, and other docile things.

Even though i grew up being "male" like everyone in my family expected, never could enjoy hunting and fishing myself.

Never enjoyed traditionally boyish sports either, kept to myself, stayed away from everyone, played the gender neutral role actually...

Though ill admit when prom came around for one of my cousins i could not help but wish i could have tried on a few prom dresses myself.

But on the other hand i still like medieval stuff, especially sword fights and alot of samurai and ninja stuff....

Guess that makes me random?

Not a quote, but a poem; "Invictus," by William Henley.  I had it hanging on the wall of my office for many years.   "I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul."

I am ambidextrous. I learned to write righty in school so I usually write with my right hand but my handwriting is better if I use my left hand. I use a lefty mouse. I am physically stronger in my left side.

Easy, I have felt the same way, not quite to the point of wanting to quit but sitting there one dosing morning and thinking "what am I doing?". I am in a crazy place right now; family is moving across the country, I am being laid off for the first time in my career and have to find a new job, and I'm in the middle of this gender journey that seems like it makes everything harder than it could be. I'd always been a "man with boobs", even when I was in my 20s and really skinny I had breast tissue, and now I'm accepting of that and want more but in a different way--I don't want to be a man with boobs, I want something different. I am something different, but it's hard because of nearly a half-century of social programing. So I empathize with your struggle, very directly.   I haven't dressed "male" for nearly six months and I just volunteered at a conference with my femme nickname and she/her pronouns on my name lanyard. The whole experience was great, I didn't feel a minute of anxiety or worry. That stuff comes at home, when left to my thoughts. Which is more telling? The comfort being Mae in public or the doubts and worry in private?   When I look in the mirror and see this more feminine me, it calms down the doubts and worry, so I'm starting to allow myself to trust in the former.

Totally!  I started HRT 21 months ago.  I'm 53yo now.  I mostly did not want the feminine genes of my family to take me over.  I told my doctor I wanted athletic breasts.  She has kept me on fairly low doses and I'm avoiding progesterone so far.   It's mostly mental for me.  Taking the pressure off from not having erections is soothing and changes my thinking.  I just want that stuff gone.  I had fun with it, but I'm over it.   I'm extremely happy with what has happened with my breasts.  Perhaps it took more than a year, but they have a feminine, athletic appearance now.  I don't notice changes in the rest of my body.  I've always enjoyed being thin and straight and have no desire for curves.  I can dig that butch with a feminine touch look.  I was upset at cutting my hair, but I'm liking it now.   It's fun to see all these young transwomen in my environment.  Everyone has their own style and the younger generation has a style of their own compared to us older people.   OK, back to baking a pie and doing some knitting....

I have one daughter who is left handed.  But she is fairly ambidextrous.  Apparently you have to be.

The time I spent "on the street" was mostly in the woods.  I dislike cities.  Even now my "bathroom" is out in the back yard, and has been for years.  When you're used to it, it's not so bad.  Helps one keep up with the seasons. I have no desire to live on the street in a city. Most of my adult kids live in cities.  It's nice enough for a visit, but I still prefer the country.

It's amazing how we can use either hand to write with, not too many people can do that.
