Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Announcing The Publication of “The Gendered Self Further Commentary on the Transsexual

Phenomenon” By Anne Vitale PhD

San Rafael, CA, USA, (Dec 28, 2010) The office of Dr. Anne Vitale announces the publication of

“The Gendered Self Further commentary on the transsexual phenomenon.” Based on Dr.

Vitale’s first hand experience in treating over 500 gender dysphoric individuals over the last

quarter century, The Gendered Self goes far beyond the usual all-is-good-about-transition

overstatement of most treatises on the subject to reveal what it is really like to be born into and to

live out one's life as a transsexual in a cissexual world. Transsexualism, whether one transitions

or not, is a life long existential dilemma that challenges the very nature of psychological

survival.

In The Gendered Self the author reports that although the tripartite treatment plan of

psychotherapy, the administration of cross-sex hormones and surgery remains the current

treatment of choice for sex/gender incongruency, we have come to learn from the as-lived

experience of individuals who’s surgery was performed as long as 30 years ago, that with

Genital Reassignment Surgery life takes a turn wherein the individual is permanently consigned

to a parallel universe: not male, not female but a bio-sociological combination of both. It is a

world where the absurd becomes ordinary and the ordinary becomes absurd. As The Gendered

Self shows us, surviving transsexualism and going on to live a meaningful life is testament to

human resoluteness and perseverance.

The Gendered Self begins by describing the problem, updates the reader on the latest science on

the probable cause of sex/gender incongruency, shows how the developing brain is genderized

in-utero and how that process can go awry leaving affected individuals sex/gender incongruent.

The author continues the experience by revealing the treatment limits and options of an average

transition, then takes us beyond into the bio-sociological realties of post treatment life.

Sample Chapter headings include:

A Brief Description of the Problem

What it means to be Gender Variant

Living the Lie

Treatment Limits and Options

Transition: Therapeutic and Medical Interventions

The Reality of the Real Life Experience

False Starts, Flip Flops and Regrets

Life in the New Gender Role

Final Thoughts.

Anne Vitale PhD is a Licensed Psychologist (Calif, #PSY15764) in private practice in San Rafael

California. She is also a long time member of the World Professional Association for

Transgender Health (WPATH) and the Bay Area Gender Associates (BAGA). She is also the

Editor/Author of “Notes on Gender Role Transition”, http://www.avitale.com , one of the first

websites to appear on the internet (1995) devoted entirely to gender issues. The site continues to

enjoy having over a thousand visitors a day.

The Gendered Self is available through Lulu.com. immediately as a PDF file download for

$5.99 USD or print on demand paperback for $14.99 USD. eReader formats to be available soon.

I went and bought both versions and have just finished reading the introduction. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the book and I am sure her perspective on the topic will be enlightening. I had the paper copy shipped to my parents so my mom can read and understand my life better and what I will find going into the future.

Thanks Laura,

Emily

I read it, and throughly enjoyed it. It had some wonderful insights embedded in this book for someone transitioning, hindsight vision can be very useful. There were the expected desciptions and terms as she brings the lay person up to speed. She groups trans folks from her practice and life into 3 main groups. A main theme was her description of this condition as a "Gender expression deprivation anxiety disorder (GEDAD)", this was an interesting way to look at this as that aptly describes many of my experiences dealing with a lifetime of this condition. The insights into transition and it's costs (huge undertaking) were quite refreshing and enlightning. She had special insights into what a partnered MTF person can expect, that I found particularly interesting.

Recommended reading for the person transitioning or considering it.

Accidents happen.  So do heat-of-the-moment murders, without premeditation or trans-related hate.  It will take a trial to really figure it out.     One thing we can see from this is that it is people in our circles of acquaintances, friends, and partners who are the ones who usually hurt us.  Not someone random. We have to be careful who we trust.

Friday May 17th is IDAHOBIT (International Day Against HOmophobia, BIphobia and Transphobia).   Do you acknowledge or celebrate it? Do you do anything special for it, like taking part in any organized events or activities?   I'm not an activist and I prefer to fly under the radar, but I am slowly becoming aware of important dates. I have been aware of the date of IDAHOBIT for a few weeks now, but other important 'rainbow' dates have not been etched into my brain yet.    I will wear my favorite pride t-shirt as a token acknowledgement of the day, but it probably won't be seen; cool weather here will mean that it will be hidden under a sweater.

Happiness for me comes from being cognizant of the things that make me feel good.   Sunshine.   Pandering to my inner woman.   Knowing that some people in my life really 'know' me.   Vacations, and Eggs Benedict at an alfresco cafe.   My wife and I being telepathic.   Grandchildren.   Music.   Wine!

True.  Every trans death is not a hate crime. There is so much hate expressed by some people, that we kinda get to expect it.

happiness to me is being ME. At all times, and it has yet to happen.

Hello & welcome, giz! Your post makes me remember how excited I was to join here too. I also had queer friends at the time I joined, but any of my trans friends lived a long distance away. So most local queer friends are gay & I felt uncomfortable coming out to them bc I couldn't assume they'd understand genderqueerness. So it was a thrill to join here and immediately have access to do many wonderful, genuine, kind & thoughtful friends-to-be.   Are you saying you're concerned that if you come out to your queer friends that somehow your parents will find out?     My love, I just want to affirm that that's not a weird dysphoria. It's just dysphoria. And we definitely get it. You're in good company here!     Look forward to seeing you around here & getting to know you. I shoot for androgynous appearance as well, leaning towards masculine.   Hope you're having a splendid day!

Listening to a YouTube mix for me and this song came up and I immediately fell in love again and just want to play music with like minded musicians playing OUR music and feel the joy and fulfillment even if no one else gets it. I love to fall into the music....

Funny.....   The day-centre transportation director told me yesterday morning that I was to receive an award, my picture on the website, etc... for having won the billiards tournament (I knew better).   Later that afternoon he returns to "shake my hand" and tell me, "thanks for participating."   I could have told him that was all I would receive earlier. I'm not well liked by management.
