How To Get The Ball Rolling With The Va And Hrt

Recommended Posts

Guest dizzyizzy

hi, I am a 23 year old male veteran and im already in the va health care system in Long Beach, CA for my service related disabilities but there is no map or checklist i can find online that tells me what to do next.

i want to start the transition and its my understanding that i need therapy before i can start HRT. i don't have the money to paid for therapy sessions, is there a way to get the VA to paid for it and the hormone treatment? i know there wont pay for SRS.

umm, i little history of myself im a 5 year vet of the marine corps, ii never left California besides Pensacola, FL for mos school. i was a FA18 aviation electrician technician down at MCAS Miramar. i have 20% disability with 2 claims pending. Most of family and a handful of friends knows what i want and who i am. i started growing my hair but from a buzz cut its going to take some time i imagine lol. i love heels, i feel like a giant in them but i love them i know im only 5'8 and thats not crazy tall but maybe once i have real breast and hair the height wont bug me. i just made a facebook for my real self http://www.facebook.com/#!/profile.php?id=100001947137164 i think that will get u there just look for Isabella Rosalyn Diaz in Long Beach. i dont know if there is a rule or not when it comes to names but my birth name does not transition well like Micheal to Michelle or nick to Nicole does. so i became picky about it and didn't want a name that was just a guy with an A at the end (ie paula, daniela, victoria)then i considered neutral names like Casey or Jaime but in the end i chose Izzie.

thanks for your time, i don't think this has been posted before. hope to hear back from anyone soon and ill answer any questions about myself

Hello, Izzy!

Welcome to the Playground!

I'm Donna Jean and a veteran, too!

Come and sit and I'll get you some cookies and a hot cup of coco...

Now, I'd like to ask you to be sure to have a look at the forum rules...there's a link at the top of most pages...It says “Terms & Conditions..

And, we moderate this site to keep it safe for everyone..

I'm in the VA system, too and although most VA locations treat vets different...few (if any) will do much towards transition.

I served in Viet Nam all I get from the VA is the bloodwork...I'm trying to get them to supply my HRT, too..

But, I think that you might be able to get some therapy through them...have you approached them about that?

Let me know what you find out....ok?

Welcome to the place, Hon!

Hey,

I have a few meds curtesy of the V.A. and you know what did the trick for me? I told my Nurse Practicioner that I was self medicating(I was). She wrote Rx for Spiro, Estradiol and Finestride. Talk about getting the ball rolling! I was shocked how easy it was. I thought there would be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Of course I explained to her that I had got the meds that I was self treating with through nefarious means and that I was scared of the risks that I was willing to take as well as potential medical complications, some real tears didn't hurt, either.

Anyway, she has been a great help. That was a year ago, and I start my first V.A. gender therapist appt. tomorrow.

Take care,

Caroline Anne

'Laura's Playground strongly recommends using medications only under a doctor's care. Caroline Anne understood it, and got legal prescriptions. It was a lot easier than she thought. We urge anyone who is self-medicating to do the same.

Greetings Izzy. As with Donna Jean I am a veteran and I am also in the VA system. I go to counseling once a month and I have talked with my therapist about transition. While I do not expect a lot of help with the medications and such, I am getting the counseling I need. I did get lucky in that my counselor has a great deal of experience with transgender. If you ask for therapy, you can probably get a referral for an initial consult. Be honest with whomever you talk with and you will most likely find that things go quickly after that. If not, just keep at it. Things change often in the VA and I know that there are programs in the works for those in our situation. It may take some time, but it is coming. Hope this helps.

I have an update for everyone. I saw my therapist at the VA yesterday and she gave me a copy of an email from the head of Mental Health. They are in the process of reviewing a policy to standardize treatment for transgender, transsexual and intersex veterans. It also states that there is to be no discrimination of any kind because of this. It gives the guideline that the VA will provide maintenance HRT but not SRS. I will scan the letter in and post it when I get the chance. Just thought you all would like to know.

By the way. I get my letter when I go to see my therapist next. However I can't get in to see my primary until April. LOL At least there is light at the end of the tunnel.

With Love,

Aislinn

Happiness to me is when I reached a turning point in my life, that I stop worrying what others think about me, and start living my life.

Very, very true.  The number of murders committed by strangers in 2022 was only about 10 percent, per the FBI.   Carolyn Marie

Good afternoon everyone,   I often wondered why @April Marie and @Willowgot up so early in spite of being retired. Now that I have my own puppy as a house pet I get it. We haven't had dogs since before my oldest granddaughter was born 22 years ago this September. I've always had working hunting dogs, and it was important they became acclimated to the current weather conditions. While the kennels had large outdoor runways, they also had pet passes into the somewhat temperature controlled garage. Yes, they were allowed in the house but only for short periods of time. Fast forward to present time, and I'm potty training a puppy as well as crate training. The first night Parker Von Schwinegruber, slept from 10:30 until 05:30. Last night we went to bed and 10:30 and he started making noise at 05:00. Since I don't want to test his ability to hold his business, we got up and went outside. He took care of business and we went back to sleep. This time he had a dental chew bar and I filled his water bowl. We cat napped until 08:00 and then got up for the day taking him immediately outside. He took care of business, and we played fetch and tug of war with his now favorite puffball. We came in and I put him back in the crate positioned so he could see me cook breakfast. Did he NO HE WENT TO SLEEP! We ate breakfast, did the dishes, and finished off the pot of coffee I brewed at 08:00. Once he woke up we stared at one another for about 20 minutes, because he seemed content to be in the crate. I got up and we worked on some obedience training as well as getting into and out of the crate with permission. We don't want him to crash the gate or any doors we will be going through.   Hugs,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

I have not heard about it here in California, but then again we have events of various sorts going on very often, and not just in the June Pride Month.  We have Trans Fashion Week going on at a hotel complex over in West Los Angeles for the next three nights featuring shows by Trans fashion designers and modeled by Trans and NB people on the runways there.  I missed a chance for some free tickets and while I know and love many of the participants I do not want to pay for the tickets which will be in the $50 to $75 range, and which at those prices are nearly sold out.  (Not to mention $25 valet parking each night at the venue complex.).  There will be actual high end fashion buyers there though and it is an area where we are gaining some good footing.  I also admit that NONE of the fashions are going to be anything at all that would fit my basic personal style but look fine if not crazy on my much younger Trans siblings who will model them. (Ok everyone else keep on @Mirrabooka's topic.)

Welcome to TransPulseForums @gizgizgizzie    I hope you find this place as helpful as I do. I’m also in a slow transition living in the androgynous world. I’m out to my grown children and my extended family with mixed support from them. Some have cut me out of their lives and others want me to be their flamboyant family member.    Best wishes, stay positive and motivated    Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Accidents happen.  So do heat-of-the-moment murders, without premeditation or trans-related hate.  It will take a trial to really figure it out.     One thing we can see from this is that it is people in our circles of acquaintances, friends, and partners who are the ones who usually hurt us.  Not someone random. We have to be careful who we trust.

Friday May 17th is IDAHOBIT (International Day Against HOmophobia, BIphobia and Transphobia).   Do you acknowledge or celebrate it? Do you do anything special for it, like taking part in any organized events or activities?   I'm not an activist and I prefer to fly under the radar, but I am slowly becoming aware of important dates. I have been aware of the date of IDAHOBIT for a few weeks now, but other important 'rainbow' dates have not been etched into my brain yet.    I will wear my favorite pride t-shirt as a token acknowledgement of the day, but it probably won't be seen; cool weather here will mean that it will be hidden under a sweater.

Happiness for me comes from being cognizant of the things that make me feel good.   Sunshine.   Pandering to my inner woman.   Knowing that some people in my life really 'know' me.   Vacations, and Eggs Benedict at an alfresco cafe.   My wife and I being telepathic.   Grandchildren.   Music.   Wine!
    • Ivy
True.  Every trans death is not a hate crime. There is so much hate expressed by some people, that we kinda get to expect it.
